• Majority of Ohio’s land is rural• How would you describe this area?• 1 out of every 4 Ohioans live in a
rural area

• Most people live in urban areas• How would you describe this area?• Suburbs are areas surrounding large
cities. What makes this area different from an urban area?– 3 out of every 4 Ohioans lives in a
suburb.

• Columbus Ohio’s largest city; center of the state–What is special about Columbus?
• Dayton and Cincinnati are larger areas in the Till Plains region.
• Cleveland and Toldeo are big cities in the Lake Plains region.
Ohio’s Resources
• Natural resources affect what people do and where they live. Previously, people settled in Ohio for many reasons, mainly because its rich in these resources.
• Settlers changed the land to meet their needs.– Forests cleared for settlements

• Land is one of Ohio’s main natural resources
• Till Plains and Lake Plains soils are very rich– Agriculture!
• Farms cover more than ½ of Ohio.• Leading crops soybeans and corn• Cattle and hogs raised
• Southeastern Ohio = woods– Wood used for building and making paper

• Early 1800s – coal• Today, it is one of Ohio’s most
important products• Fuels are found throughout the state
(burned to make electricity/heat)– Coal, oil, natural gas
• Mining salt, limestone, clay, sand, gravel

• Communities often grow near resources
• Why do you think that is?• Hamilton started near good farmland

• Many products are manufactured in Ohio
• Manufacturing the making of goods from raw materials by hand or with machinery– Steel used in some Ohio factories to
make cars, tools, airplane parts.– Cleveland and Youngstown

• Ohio plays a major role in moving people and resources throughout the country and world
• Lake Erie and OH River routes for the west– Ports along Lake Erie and the OH River
became shipping centers– Transport goods all across the country
• Early years – National Railroad
