students will be celebrating the end of the year with May Crowning! Everyone is welcome at the Grotto on Sunday, May
6th at 10am. There will be songs, scripture, art and a special litany devoted to our Blessed Mother.
Everyone is asked to bring a flower! What Happens After Soup & Substance? A Parish Potluck will take place on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30pm following Mass. This one will help us all to get to know the parish community even better. No matter who you are or how involved you are there may be things going on in the parish that you might not know about. It’s good to know about these ministries and projects if only to be able to appreciate what it takes to keep our parish community going and growing. Greater Lansing Area First of all I want to convey that it seems there has been many appeals being made to you for financial support over the past year. First, our joining the Diocesan Witness to HOPE campaign to help fund our building addition. Next you learn just a week or two ago about the Diocese Services Appeal or DSA and now, you are being hit with this appeal. Let me say, we only can do what we can do and so each of us must decide which appeal, which charity, we can meet when it comes to a making a donation or pledge. So with that said, this coming weekend of May 5 & 6 our parish will be collecting envelopes to support both the St. Vincent Catholic Charities and Cristo Rey Community Center programs that provide services to thousands of children, families and adults living in this community. Their services supply tools and compassion needed to help individuals see value in themselves and find self-sufficiency. You should find a contribution envelope for the Catholic Charities Appeal in the back of your parish envelope set you received from us or you can always place your donation in an envelop marked for these two charities. Please consider giving a gift in support of our Catholic Charities. Below are just three examples of how your donation will assist hundreds or thousands who reached out to our Catholic Charities for help. ** The local need is great, and your gift will provide new hope to those hurting within our communities and will directly impact the lives of your neighbors who are in greatest need. Your gift could help provide fresh fruits and vegetables through the Cristo Rey Community Center’s Food Pantry or Community Kitchen for families struggling to make their grocery money stretch. ** Your gift could help refugees who have fled from their homes because of terrible acts of oppression and persecution. They come to St. Vincent Catholic Charities with nothing, and yet with a little help, they begin to build a new, safe, and productive life in our community. ** Your gift could help those children and adults whose hearts and minds need healing to receive counseling services, psychiatric care, and resources for finding a path to healthy living and a new life. These resources come to us through Cristo Rey Community Center’s Mental Health Clinic, St. Vincent Catholic Charities counseling services and the Children’s Home which provides extensive therapeutic support for children who have great need for healing.

Music Ministry Leadership Team This past Tuesday the Music Ministry Leadership Team (MMLT) met for the very first time. It was very exciting. Including myself, we had 10 participants representing our various musical ensembles. In its infancy, the MMLT will be looking into ways of collecting data or information from you, our fellow parishioner, about what direction our parish Music Ministry needs to go. With that said, during the weekend of Pentecost, May 19 and 20 to be exact, MMLT members will be present in the Gathering Space before and after our three masses to guide you through a short, simple dot survey. This will be the first of several dot surveys spread throughout the late spring, early summer. Your input is very important and will help shape the future programming of Music Ministry. Summer Music Pentecost weekend is when we bring the Easter season to a close and is also the official end of the 2017-2018 music year. All our parish ensembles will get a much appreciated summer break. However, I’d like to make available opportunities for musicians to come share their talent at Mass on a more casual note. During the months of June, July, August and September, we will have alternating weekends where you may come sing or play at 5:00pm or 11:00am Mass. All you will have to do is sign-up for a Mass time and show up an hour before.

Next Sunday’s Scriptures A reflection on the readings for Mass next Sunday, May 6
Following the commands of the Lord brings life and joy. The Lord’s commands are not restricting or limiting, but rather are the way to our fulfilment in this life and the next. We can love and be loved by our Creator by following his commandments. In the first reading, Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48, Peter speaks of fearing the Lord and doing his work, and the Holy Spirit comes upon the believers. Peter commands even the Gentiles who have received the Holy Spirit to be baptized. In John’s First Letter, 1 John 4:7-10, he writes of loving one another because God is love, and he abides in us when we love. Jesus explains in the Gospel, John 15:9-17, that we are commanded to love as he has loved – by laying down our lives for each other.

Harold Moody, age 87, died on Thursday, April 19. A funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Dwight Ezop on Monday, April 23. Harold is survived by his sons, Michael (Monica), Mark (Angie Kitzman), and
Stephen. He is also survived by four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brother James, five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law,
and many nieces and nephews.

New Changes in Youth Fusion
St. Jude’s Faith Formation strives to meet the needs of as many families as possible. In the past couple of years, we took a weekly program for 5th-8th grade students and created a format to include dinner ministry, large group activities, and catechesis in 13 sessions. We found it to have more involvement and energy with the kids! Beginning in the fall, we will take Youth Fusion to the next level with the following changes: Monthly Youth Mass: 1st Sunday of the month during the 11:00am mass. All ministries will be filled by the 7th-12th grade students! Music, greeters, ushers, lectors and Eucharistic Ministers for those who have been Confirmed. Hot Dog Hospitality: ALL PARISHIONERS are invited for a hot dog lunch following every Youth Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month. Each month we’ll have a spotlight topping: Coney Dogs, German Dogs, Chicago Dogs...the possibilities are endless! 7th and 8th grade students will meet every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, 12:00-2pm. A requirement of the program will be to commit to church ministry twice a year during the Youth Mass. 5th and 6th grade students will meet every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 12:00-2pm. Exciting News for Next Year!
As this year of school and Rooted winds to a close, we are very excited to announce that big things are in store for next fall!
A Youth Mass will take place during the 11:00 am Mass on the first Sunday of every month from October to April. Our students will be taking control of everything from the readings to the music. An upbeat atmosphere geared towards middle and high school students is just what the doctor ordered.
In addition, we are thrilled to be adding more Rooted meetings to the calendar. The scheduling will be on a more consistent basis, held three times a month instead of the two we currently have. See the website for the preliminary schedule!
Knights of Columbus Scholarship
Calling all seniors with a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian who is a member in good standing with our Knights of Columbus chapter. Pick up a scholarship application or download it online. As this is a parish scholarship, your chances of being selected are pretty good! Applications due May 11.
Rooted Wrap Up
Last week, we had a hodgepodge of special activities at our Rooted Meeting.
As part of the Faith Formation step-up, our regular crew was joined by the current 8th graders. The 8th graders got a taste of what Rooted is like and what they will be in for when they come next year. We were also fortunate to be joined by representatives from our Knights of Columbus who spoke to the students about their awesome organization!
A Humble Thank You From Hallie
This past Sunday, the members of the Rooted Youth Group, led by the phenomenal Leadership Team and my amazing volunteers threw me a surprise baby shower.
I have known that I was blessed to be part of this Faith Community since I hired in, but God continues to show me shining examples of how He works in my life. This past weekend, it was evident in a special way through the outpouring of love that flowed from our teens.
Thank you so much for the gifts, desserts, and most importantly for the love. Baby Theodore, my husband, and I are truly blessed.

20s - 30s Women’s Group
This fall, we will be launching a new group for women in their 20s - 30s (or early 40s).
This will be a social group that will meet for casual conversation and faith sharing. We are currently looking for one more woman to serve as a rotating facilitator for the group.

What Happens After Soup & Substance? Parish gatherings for Soup & Substance were such a success that people wanted to continue the idea with some modifications. Here is how we will continue the process - on the second Tuesday of the month (except during June, July and August) we will host a potluck for any and all who would like to join us. The new name of this ministry is Exploring Faith at a Potluck. Our September 11 topic will be A Walk Through the Holy Land with Rob & Sue Strouse. Mark your calendar now! Whether you are already remarried or have recently divorced it is a good idea to look into the possibility of annulment so that a future marriage can take place in the Church. Helping Hands Ministry needs a more current cell phone for the ministry use. We are currently using an old flip phone and it is just not working well. If you have
updated your phone but the older one still works please consider donating it to Helping Hands. Call Terry Humenik if you can help! St. Jude Medical Equipment Loan Closet
Did you know that the parish has a medical equipment loan closet? Parishioners have donated used medical equipment and it is then loaned to anyone in need (including non-parishioners). Currently we have been offered a lightly used hospital bed. If you or anyone you know is in need of a hospital bed please contact Terry Humenik ASAP. This is an item that we don’t
usually have in the loan closet due to lack of storage space.
Your Help Is Needed There is an elderly lady in the parish who lives alone and needs someone to stay with her after surgery from May 3-5 to help her with meds, meals and walking a bit in her home. No lifting or special skills needed. If you can take a 3-4 hour shift please call Terry Humenik ASAP so we can develop a calendar of help for her.

St. Therese Parish, “Open Doors” Tutoring Program: is home to “Open Doors”, a free tutoring center for children in grades K-6. Children from all over the city are being helped with reading and math skills by volunteer tutors on Mondays and Wednesday from 4– 6pm. If you haven’t visited the church after dark you may not have noticed that we have new
lights in the parking lot and on the walls of the garage. The lights look different as they
have a thinner profile than the former lights but they do a fine job of lighting up our parking lot and garage
areas, providing a safe environment. God blessed us with a visit from an electrical contractor who does
this type of installation throughout Michigan. They were able to switch out our high energy usage lights for
the new low energy usage LED lighting. The cost of the project was $4600 but one again we were blessed
by having the project paid in full by a Consumers Energy Rebate program! As well as having the new
lights covered by the rebate program the estimated costs savings of switching to the LED lighting is $4500
per year! A true win/win, give thanks to God for His blessings on this parish as we continue to improve our
church building and grounds in reverence to God and seeking ways to better serve Him.

SACRAMENTAL READINESS AND PREPARATION Reconciliation and First Communion for Elementary Students: Requires Baptism
To begin preparations for any Sacrament requires a full year of Formation prior to
Sacramental Preparation workshops.
Formal Sacramental preparations begin in the 2nd grade.
2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade: one year of Formation plus two family workshops in subsequent
year and expected continual Formation.
5th – 8th grade: one year of Formation plus four student workshops in subsequent year
and expected continual Formation.
First Reconciliation is celebrated in December of the Sacramental Prep year.
First Communion Mass is celebrated the 2nd week after Easter (date will vary) at one special
First Communion Mass for the preparing class.
Confirmation for High School Students: Requires Baptism, Reconciliation and First Communion Confirmation for students in grades 9‐12 who have not yet received Reconciliation and First Communion: Requires Baptism. This is a usually a 2 year program.
One year of Rooted and special adapted Formation wherein students will receive Reconciliation and First Communion.
Confirmation preparation/Confirmation with the Bishop usually in the second year.
Appointment with program coordinators to determine readiness as to when they will receive the sacraments.
Confirmation for students who have received all required Sacraments:
Begins after a full year of Formation prior to Sacramental preparation.
Begins in the 9th grade.
Students are confirmed by the Bishop as required by the Diocese. Students not having a year of Formation prior to Confirmation must make an appointment with the program coordinators to determine readiness as to when they will be Confirmed. Confirmation after graduation: See Terry Humenik
