Chris Wong received his architectural educa-tion at the University of Houston in USA and the University of Cambridge in England. His professional experience includes working for Skidmore Owens and Merill in Houston in 1984-5 and Eric Parry Architects in London up till 1991 when he obtained his registra-tion with the Architects Registration Board, UK.

He founded C’arch architecture + design in 1992 and the practice has grown to a modest size of over thirty personnel. Informed by Chris’s overseas experiences, the practice is structured with a large core of architects; complimented by a smaller support team to ensure that the design quality is maintained.

His interest in photography, history, travel and diving compliments the exploration in his work and research.

Chris’s contribution to the profession in the form of the professional body and academia is as follow:-

Intellect is the foundation of exploring, experimenting and applying. Finding thinking solutions that are relevant, con-textual and sustainable becomes possible when the conventional parameters of dis-course are breached. Today’s architecture is mostly consumed like high street fash-ion, post modern manner; the presenta-tion of architecture like architecture can

be glossy and fashionably seasonal. The antithesis of this short term gratification is of great interest to us and the type of architecture we pursue. We do not negate nor deny the follies of post modernism; however, in our thinking and application we make attempts to introduce delicate innovations that are perhaps casual, rel-evant and sustainable.

DIRECTOR / FOUNDER

Wilson received his architectural education at the University of Nottingham and Oxford Polytechnic, UK. Upon graduation, he worked in London till end 1993 when he obtained his registration with the Architects Registration Board, UK. He joined C’arch in 1994 and was appointed a Director in 2000.

Wilson has considerable experience leading many award-winning projects of varying complexity and scale. These include Damai Suria, Iringan Hijau, Belum Rainforest Resort and sixceylon.

Wilson stands in awe of nature, fascinated by how it develops an inherent design intel-ligence in its adaptations for survival and procreation. He believes that a parallel can be drawn with how project constraints and challenges provide opportunities for “ad-aptations” to generate innovative designs.

Sheh-Ren received her architectural educa-tion in University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Part of her final year thesis involved a conserva-tion research project sponsored by UNESCO (LEAP); Community Participation in Waqf Rehabilitation, Kapitan Keling Mosque and surrounding areas, George Town, Penang, Malaysia.

Upon graduation, she joined C’arch in 2000. She obtained her APAM membership in 2007. She was appointed Director in 2011 following eleven years of architectural expe-rience with C’arch.

She has worked on a variety of projects from factories, retail, offices, master planning, strata landed houses, low and high-rise residential of medium and luxury nature.

Sheh-Ren has led project teams on several notable works including award - winning Iringan Hijau, Garden Manor, The Mansions , The Breezeway, The Signature, an interna-tional Resort Community Masterplan in Sabah and Masterplan and design of strata landed houses in Johor Bahru.

She enjoys looking into new design innova-tions, material usage, building detailing and human behaviors in the built environment. In her spare time, she juggles between her young family, reading, diving and volun-teering in the Children Ministry at Bangsar Lutheran Church. She also sits in the PAM Membership, Youth and Constitution Committee 2014/2015.

for shaping the practice’s innovation, re-search and benchmarking efforts related to sustainability, materials and construction technology.

Prior to C’arch, his 14-year professional experience includes working in Sheffield, Kuala Lumpur and Dublin. His notable works in commercial buildings and trans-portation projects have won the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Awards, Cityscape Dubai Design Review Awards, PAM Excellence in Architecture Awards, PAM Architectural Steel Awards, BHP-PAM Colorbond Award, FIABCI Malaysia Property Award and nominated for the World Architecture Awards.

A JPA scholar, a recipient of Sheffield Society of Architects and Surveyors Prize and an RIBA President’s Medal Nominee, Chew has taught, and been a visiting critic at University Technology Mara and University Malaya. Having travelled extensively, he is particularly keen in high-mountain trekking and mountaineering.

Chew received his architecture education at the University of Sheffield (1993-1995) and at The Bartlett, University College London (1996-1998) with a first-class honours and commendations respectively.

Chew joined C’arch in 2012 and became an Associate Director in 2014. He is instrumen-tal to the project and design management of the practice’s key residential, civic and cultural, hospitality, masterplanning and sustainability projects. These include TWY Mont Kiara a luxury condominium in Kuala Lumpur, Aman Clubhouse in Selangor, an award-winning Arata of Tijani a luxury con-dominium in Kuala Lumpur, The Primorsky Entertainment Resort City in Russia and a International Resort Community Masterplan in Sabah.

Chew is also leading the practice’s inter-national competition projects including Taichung Fine Arts Museum & Library in Taiwan, Busan Tower Redevelopment in South Korea and Guggenheim Helsinki in Finland. More recently, he is responsible

Reza received his architectural education at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia (1994-1999). Upon grad-uation, he worked locally, and then received an offer to work in Dubai, UAE and later in Libya. Managed to escape the civil war in Libya, he started anew in C’arch in 2011. He gained his experiences over the years from consultancy, developer and construction firms to enable him to understand better the construction scenario from all angles. He also dabbles in Project Management whilst in Dubai and has injected practical proficiency learnt then, throughout his re-maining works.

Throughout his involvements in the con-struction industry, he has been involved in various type of projects from 4 stars hotel

and private residencies in Palm Jumeira, Dubai; 5 stars resort in Maldives; Mixed Development and Business Centres for DIFC Gate Village and Dubai Lagoon; University Al-Fateh, Libya; primary, secondary and smart schools locally and high profile resi-dential projects (landed and high rise) both in Dubai and Malaysia.

He seeks challenges in life and believes life is the best teacher, if you understand and able to learn from living through it. He did bungy jumping at Taupo Bungy (New Zealand’s highest Water Touch Bungy Jump of 47 meters above Waikato River), enjoys his weekly rigorous 12km walking, loves observing human behaviour and practices on and off yoga.

This three-storey low density luxury condominium comprises two sets of dwellings placed on two con-tiguous land parcels, each grouped around its own planted garden deck which conceals as well as brings natural light and trees to the car park below. The build-ings were designed to offer a tropical home within an urban context.

This enclave of strata link houses gave us the op-portunity to reinvent the ubiquitous Malaysian link house, which is typically dark and stuffy. Changing the dimensions from an oblong to a squarer footprint made each floor brighter and appear more spacious.

The traditional airwell, long abandoned for security reasons, was reinterpreted as an open decks adjacent to each party wall, creating an additional external fa-çade for natural lighting and ventilation. The resultant façade presents each home as a detached unit.

The embellishments on the front of the building are a series of precisely angled vertical brise soleil fins which do double duty as open down pipes for rain water. The open pipe is much more suitable for Malaysia because they are easier to maintain as they do not get clogged with leaves. There is also a poetic element: as water flows down these pipes on a rainy day, we see nature in action.

The creation of an atrium as the focal point of this apartment com-plex serves many functions. Surrounded by the strategically oriented 15-storey apartment blocks, the atrium offers an airy, cool and shaded space that’s perfect as a community gathering place. Broken tiles and offcuts were used to make an inexpensive yet attractive mosaic flooring.

A generous water plaza occupies the entrance lobby of this Grade A commercial building. This film of water is at once ornamental and functional, transforming an empty space into a reflective pool. The few centimetres of water is easily drained, transforming this space into a dry plaza which can be used as a venue for a variety of events.

The Huruhara feature wall was built using bricks from the demoli-tion of an existing structure instead of transporting them offsite. Huruhara means confusion in Bahasa Malaysia and is an apt name for this striking wall.

A 2,000 key hotel on Russia’s Pacific Coast. The devel-opment also incorporates 6000 sqft of retail, theatres, casino, spas and food and beverage outlets. The fabric of the building would have to withstand the tempera-ture extremes experience in this part of the world with lows of -20C and highs of +25C. The exterior of the building is proposed to be clad with integrated light-ing which opens up the possibility of creating unique moments that will mesmerize and enchant guest.

SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Taichung Museum of Fine Arts & Library Taichung, Taiwan2013

Perspectives are negated as in Chinese art, by an undulating ground plane connected to the park. The museum does not sit on a horizon. Rather, it is lifted above on a series of semi circular piloti that punch through the sky, painting the vast undercroft with light, awash with different intensities, providing the space for sculpture, auditoria and socializing. The light invites you and enter into it, rising into the building.

The exhibition spaces and the library are connected by a series of passages or walks and garden courts, traversing the entire length and height of building, providing thematic spaces for socializing, rest, refreshment and contemplation. The gardens bring light into the building as well as become orientation points within.

Build Your Manifesto, 2011 Exhibition Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia2011

The pen/pencil is the extension of one’s mind. A line is drawn on a drawing and the dialogue continues with overlapping sketches which manifests itself to the form of architecture. The sketch box consists of a 2m x 2m x 2m cube, wrapped in paper, forming a blank canvas. All members of C’arch were invited to contribute to this canvas based on ideas and questions surrounding a live project encompassing a care home and independ-ent living units for the elderly. Over the days, large statement-making drawings as well as little tongue in cheek sketches appeared, allowing new stories to de-velop from the different views of the issue at hand. The extension of this exercise was the continuation of the sketches by the public during the exhibition, creating a coincidental overlapping dialogue and interchange of ideas that could perhaps ensure that architecture for

the elderly is meaningful and dignified.

Serpihan Laman is an attempt to understand what our common ground as Malaysians might be by juxtapos-ing recognizable local architectural typologies and the insertion of fragments of symbolic representations that shape our collective and individual experiences within the overlapping spaces. As architects, we de-sign in a multi racial/cultural/religious/ethnic realm so we began by questioning our understanding of ‘Malaysian-ness’. While we have a shared history, there are different perceptions of it, depending on perspective. Similarly, common threads between the kampung house, the Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion and

di dalam istana maziah beyond their architectural ex-pressions were apparent: i) a certain decorum in the treatment of public to private spaces; ii) a response to the hot humid climate in the use passive solar strate-gies of courtyard and verandah to ventilate and buffer. The resultant convergence of these indoor-outdoor spaces within the rich cultural contexts of each typol-ogy in the model is simultaneously appealing and absurd against the backdrop of history and religious diversity. Such contradictions can be confusing, at times provocative or merely awkward; but occasion-ally, there are moments of beauty in the melange.

Its open-nature touches the ground lightly and gracious-ly welcomes visitors into its communal civic heart. A quiet elegance is achieved in its choice of materials, incorporating cutting-edge sustainable technolo-gy and a refined expression of its timber structure.

Guggenheim Helsinki is envisioned as a series of open shelves on timber trestles - a flexible and egal-itarian space for either spontaneous encounters or art installations and events, which is displayed to the city. These spaces and art shelves leads one upwards, whilst its volumes discreetly reframe Helsinki’s beautiful cityscapes and landmarks be-yond, always locating the visitor in its context.

This three-storey low density luxury condo-minium comprises two sets of dwellings placed on two contiguous land parcels, each grouped around its own planted gar-den deck which conceals as well as brings natural light and trees to the car park be-low. The buildings were designed to offer a tropical home within an urban context, enhanced by a palette of fair-faced con-crete, stainless steel, aluminium and glass complemented by the warm hues of balau timber. Altogether there are 26 units com-prising seven different configurations which vary from single and double to triple level apartments.

This development comprises 137 2½ to 3½-storey strata homes within a gated and landscaped compound with a clubhouse, pool and other common amenities. The mas-ter layout plan was conceived to foster the ideals of community living and place mak-ing. The central spine of the development is punctuated by a pool which becomes the focal point for the entire community. The residences are vibrant, light filled and airy spaces with distinct public and private zones.

One block forms a facade to the street, through which a triple height entrance reveals the complex volumetric composi-tion beyond with a swimming pool in a

sunken court and a second block to the rear within layers of tropical landscaped gardens.

The facades are richly worked three dimen-sionally with various devices for privacy, shade and environmental control. Sliding adjustable screens shade deep balconies and allow for ample cross ventilation.

A 33-storey service apartment building which comprises 215 units of compact and com-fortable residences which take advantage of the vistas and quiet location in Bukit Ceylon. The apartments range from 558 to 1,555 sq. ft in size, offering accommodation of one to three bedrooms. All the residents’ amenities are located in the podium room, interspersed with waterscaped gardens and decks. North-south orientation and double-layered facade minimise heat gain. The outer layer comprises a series of lightweight patterned screens that provide sixceylon with its distinctive signature.

Surau Ali Bashah is located at the central gardens of Neocyber, a 21 acre mixed-used development. Serving this community of of-fice workers, shoppers and residents, Surau Ali Bashah seeks to provide a dignified and peaceful place for worship and prayer.

Conceived as an eloquent and simple shelter within a garden, the plan is a composition of uni-directional walls. The walls vary in length to enclose and create spaces, form stores, create openings, whilst sometimes dissolving into layered screens.

This simplicity in plan is reflected in the representation of the building. Materials employed are brick & plaster, stripped away of all adornments or components, where fenestrations are mere gaps in walls, providing a facade which responds to where openings or privacy are required. A symbolic minaret marks its intended use as a place of worship, refuge and activity centre for the Muslim community around.

These include international space planning modules on an 8.500m structural grid, combination of tinted coloured glazing/aluminium com-posite panelling curtain walling system, perforated metals for sunshades and solar control, 4.200m floor-to-floor height, dedi-cated service lift with 2,000kg loading, full compliance for disabled access, and dedi-cated tenant Genset/UPS/Service Provider Rooms.

A water plaza in the reception area can be transformed into a dry plaza for functions. Outdoor facilities include a podium garden with landscaped spaces and decks for a mul-titude of functions.

This timber house comprising a cluster of three distinctly separate but linked pavil-ions, sits lightly on a 3.5 acre site, which is a typically Malay orchard surrounded by the sea, a delicate belt of mangrove, the village cemetery and artifically created ponds. The dining space engages the ground, while the living pavilion is raised off the ground and encompasses the formal entrance to the house. A bridge in a small garden con-necting the living space with the pavilion which houses the bedrooms and study. This pavilion is detached from the public spaces and enjoys the intimacy of open baths set in private gardens.

This high-rise commercial development comprises two 15-storey towers sitting on top of a 200-metre podium. The building is located at the centre of an existing business park and is visible from the North Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE). The eye-catching facade consists of a series of three to four-storey vertical brise soleil fins, equally spaced but stacked in a staggered fashion, with accents of highlight colours.

This is a small complex comprising two laboratories, library, office and open terraces for sitting and sleeping. It was designed as a place to facilitate the gathering and the dissemination of information from the jungles in Royal Belum and Temenggor Dam Complex in line with ideas of sustainability outlined in the ‘Pulau Banding Charter‘. It incorporates environmentally friendly and tropical themes such as a safari roofs, deep roof overhangs, open terraces, open yards and toilets. Existing trees on the site were retained. Researchers are encouraged to cultivate a garden of indigenous trees from saplings collected in the jungle.

This country resort is situated on a 1,200 acre disused tin mine. The site provided much of the inspiration for its own rehabilitation as we looked to the iconic palong and pump houses for structural as well as aesthetic clues. The resulting 30 lakeside chalets and reception building are designed in response to the tropical climate with high roofs, tim-ber screens and strategic plantings. They are built with simple metal roofing sheets, brick and plaster, and sustainable tropical hardwoods.

Arata of Tijani is about the weaving and artic-ulation of interstitial spaces in the massing of the architecture. Each stack of apartments is introduced delicately by acknowledging the intimate and green surroundings at ground level. A hint of the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, just beyond, is orchestrated by the careful composition of landscaping and gentle lifting of the ground plane via a majestic and sweeping ramped stair.

An elevated garden comprising a collection of water bodies and pavilions organizes the thresholds to the dwellings above. This gar-den at first visually reveal immensity of the city and its proximity; and the excitement

of the urban adrenaline is enjoyed in the cocoon of a plate set between the city and leafy Bukit Tunku.

In the gaps between blocks and in the under-croft of the buildings, extended stretches of water exaggerate the sense of generosity of space. It is a game of harnessing a sensible decorum of dignity in what is an extremely difficult site in geometry and immediate conditions of traffic and sounds.

Considerations are made in the design to mitigate noise pollution and sun shading. Holistically, Arata of Tijani is a sensitively conceived in design thoughts and in the making of a place that is enjoyable to reside.

This 70-room eco resort and research cen-tre located on an island on the edge of the Temenggor Dam was conceived as a sustain-able development. Combining new and ren-ovated buildings, the architecture embodies the themes of sustainability, recycling and energy efficiency, which are reflected in the huruhara walls, sapling screens cut from fast-growing rainforest plants, safari roof for natural ventilation, water harvesting system and air conditioning heat recovery systems for hot water. The buildings also features tropical architectural elements like deep eaves and fenestrations.

Located in Mont Kiara, TWY is a 51-storey serviced apartment tower comprising of 484 duplex residences. It comprises of 600sf, 800sf & 1,400sf dwellings which provide distinctive, compact and fully-fitted urban residences which enjoy a unique spatial ex-perience made possible by its fully duplex configuration for all units.

The tower is positioned on top of a 0.9 acre self-cleaning bio-filtration pool which forms a waterscape of reeds and wetlands amongst the swimming pools. The rippling surface of this water body not only creates a serene, yet dynamic canvas to place its various facilities such as the gym, swimming pools, cabanas and various communal and private water-side terraces, but it also facilitates evapora-tive cooling to these spaces.

A sky lounge at the top of the tower with 360° panoramic views, provide a dining room, AV suite, cigar lounge and viewing & entertainment decks for the exclusive use of residents.

Busan Metropolitan City has called for an international architectural design competi-tion to remodel Busan Tower. The remodel-ling effort aims at accentuate it as a centre of history, culture and tourism while improving its citizen access, public functions and re-generation of its historic downtown.

Our vision for the new Busan Tower and Yongdusan Park is to re-instate the lost forested hilltop that it was once described,

as ‘a very deep forest enough to find the record about the appearance of three tigers in 1875’ and to form a new hill-top with pan-oramic viewing gallery and facilities. The vi-sion redefines the existing square, expands public accesses and facilities while preserv-ing its historic significance. As the tower ages with its locality, it establishes itself as an icon; an icon that deserves a high level of preservation.
