BY KATHY J. LANG

As vacation time draws near, a little advance planning can help Fido welcome visitors to your home. Remember that not all in-laws, cousins or college friends love dogs. Some might even be afraid or have allergies, so a frank conversation about expectations prior to the visit is in order.

Guests change your household routine, which can be upsetting to some dogs. If you plan to have large family gatherings, consider the best way to accommodate your dog during those times. If your dog is well-mannered, social and adaptable, he may be able to join you for an hour or two at a time. Introduce him to your guests, have him sit for greeting and then give him guidance as to your expectations for him.

If he’s good with children (and vice versa), perhaps you can supervise some ball tossing in the back yard before directing child and canine energies in other directions to prevent over stimulation. If your dog has a di cult time dealing with strang-ers and changes to routine, explain that Fido will come out for brief visits and potty breaks, but he’ll actually be happier spend-ing time in his crate with a chew toy.

It’s important to maintain your dog’s feeding, exercise and

sleeping schedule while you have guests. If signi cant changes are unavoidable, accustom your dog to a modi ed routine a few days before visitors arrive. In some cases the best solution for everyone might be asking a trusted friend, vet or boarding ken-nel to care for your dog during the in ux of relatives.

If you parent your puppy di erently than your guests, don’t be shy about stating your household rules. If your dog is expected to sit for greeting, not allowed to eat people food and forbidden from furniture, share this information as well as instructions for dealing with the dog if he does anything inap-propriate. Don’t expect your guests to train or discipline your dog; that would be unfair to them and to your dog. However, the obedience and household manners that you’ve worked so hard on should not go out the window when the relatives arrive. Advance planning and clear expectations will make sure Fido and friends have a memorable vacation.

Kathy Lang is President of Family Dog Training Center, 1515 Central Ave. S., Kent. In business since 1977, Kathy and her sta have helped thousands of families train their dogs to become well-mannered companions. For more information about Family Dog, visit www.familydogonline.com or call 253- 854-9663.

BY JENNIFER SCHNEIDER – PICK OF THE LITTER DOG TRAINING

ere seems to be a trend towards assuming all dogs should and can bene t from visiting the dog park. Some dogs can bene t from this type of social experience, but not all of them. We know the world is full of all di erent types of people. e same is true with dogs.

Not all dogs like to so-cialize with a large group of dogs, approaching every dog as if it were his best buddy. Dog parks are designed for dogs who are inherently social and thrive on meeting and interacting with a wide variety of dogs. Dogs that are picky about who they like and don’t like are generally not right for the dog park. Dogs lacking in social skills tend to play and play until they start to get irritable. Some avoid playing altogether.

Social dogs with great play etiquette tend to take frequent breaks during playtime. Frequently, during a play session with another dog, a social dog will sni the ground, break eye contact or turn away from the other dog to keep playtime from getting out of hand.

If your dog has ever bitten another dog, the dog park is not the right place to socialize him. e same rule applies to very fearful dogs, even those who do not bite or don’t have a history of biting, because the situation is o en overwhelming and can add to the anxiety.

Also, if your dog is under 4 months old, the dog park is probably not the right place for him. Puppies can learn poor social skills from other dogs just as easily as proper social skills. Puppy classes are a safer environment, as the instruc-tors require puppies to be vaccinated. You don’t know about the health history of the other dogs in the park. Remember, it is OK if your dog doesn’t like the dog park, and it is OK if he does. Both types of dogs are completely normal. For informa-tion, call 206-799-3552.

Pets and Guests: Tips for a happy visit

Blood banks for pets need blood donations

Dog parks require ‘social skills’

BY CHRISTINA RYAN – ACCES

Pets, like humans, sometimes need blood transfusions. In order to perform this potentially life-saving procedure, the Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services (ACCES) Blood Bank needs more dogs and cats to sign up for the donor program.

When ACCES started its community blood bank in 2004, the goal was to always have high-quality blood products available for patients. Without volunteer blood donors from the com-munity, the blood bank would be unable to maintain its ability to supply fresh blood products for animals in need. And the demand for blood products is increasing annually.

As part of a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital, the ACCES blood bank supplies the products necessary to treat critically ill pets, or those who have experienced severe trauma.

It also provides blood products to other local veterinary clinics when needed. With the growth of the hospital and increased demand for blood products, the ACCES blood bank has been unable to maintain the supply needed based on the current donor pool.

At present, the program has 72 dogs and 54 cat donors. e blood bank is seeking healthy dogs over 50 pounds

between the ages of one and six, good natured and healthy and current on vaccines. Cat donors must be between the ages of 1 and 6, weigh more than 10 pounds, are healthy, indoor-only and current on vaccines. Cats are anesthetized for the proce-dure, but dogs are not.

For more information call 206-364-1660 or visit www.criti-calcarevets.com.
