RONDEBOSCH: ‘UNMISTAKABLY UPMARKET’
NADINE MOODIE
SIX years of revision to a plan to de-velop part of the Rondebosch SportsClub has finally drawn to conclu-
sion. The tract of land in question – encom-
passing 30 000m² – is on theMarist SportsClub cricket oval.PaulHenry, managingdirector ofRaw-
sonDevelopers, says that after about sev-en years it appears that all objectionshave been met and a public announce-ment was made.Ward councillor Matthew Kemp-
thorne says he was concerned about thetortoise pace of getting this projectthrough to council. The revised scheme has been scaled
down from 70 to 41 upmarket townhous-es. The developers have agreed that theclub would retain the oval in the centreand erect a pavilion. The area allocatedto bowling will also remain. Henry saysresidents were concerned about thegrounds and developer’s plans.“The whole area is now unmistakably
upmarket,” he says.“The finishes will be of high standard
with granite stove tops for all counters,
porcelain tiles, laminatedwooden floors, aluminium frames for all windows anddoors, aswell as down lighting inall openplan areas.”He adds that the club chairperson, Pro-
fessor Raj Ramesar, has been very sup-portive, and sees developing the facili-ties as a solution to eliminate the backlogof debt the club has accrued.Ramesar says: “Initially people were
negative about the changes, but this hasbrought us to a more sustainable solu-tions for the club.” Kempthorne sayseven though the club sold off sections ofthe land in thepast, negotiationswith the
community has turned out to result in awin-win situation. “The greater commu-nity in Rondebosch will also be able touse the facilities, because the developer, the club and community worked togeth-er, and came up with this plan.”Rondebosch Rosebank Ratepayers and
Business Association’s chairperson,Monica Sutherland says: “Initially ourresidents had many objections about theproperty, out of fear that itwould removethe scenic views and increase traffic vol-umes. We no longer have a problemwithit and pleased about the conclusion thatwas reached.”

STREET NAME CHANGE: POIGNANT MOMENT FOR IMAM’S FAMILY
History’s long roadNADINE MOODIE
DRIVING down a well-known street inClaremont, she is overcomewith emo-tion as she sees her father’s name on
the street name sign. For the family of political activist Imam
Abdullah Haron the renaming of a sectionof Lansdowne Road brings partial closureto the manner in which he died.“Most of us are still trying to come to
terms with death, because we were veryyoung at the time, and unaware of his im-mense political influence,” says daughterFatiema Masoet.“The renaming of this road will serve as
a constant reminder that we should buildon the truthful legacy he left behind.”Masoet was only 13 years old at the time
of her father’s death. She says she becameemotional when she unintentionally drovedownLansdowneRoad and saw thenew sig-nage, carrying with her father’s name, be-ing erected. The City of Cape Town officially changed
the name of the section from Turfhall toPalmyra roads on Human Rights Day. Thesection from Wetton to Turfhall roads, willremain Lansdowne Road. The decision was taken by Council in Au-
gust, following a lengthy public participa-tion process. Street name boards and plateswere erected and painted last week.Mayoral Committee member for Trans-
port, Roads and Stormwater, Brett Herronsays the process of naming is part of the rec-onciliation process. “This is also a sign ofhow important names are to the communi-ty. The name was proposed by residentsduring a public consultation process thatstarted in 2008,” Herron says.
“We conducted a thorough and extensiveconsultation process on the final list of pro-posals and therewas significant support forthe late ImamHaron to be recognised forhiscontribution.”The changes to street boards and plates
totalled R35 000.But the name change and selected name
maybequestionedbymanyClaremont resi-dents.Harfield Village Association chairperson
James Fernie, who supports the namechanging process, says most residents arenot aware of the change.“I knew the City intended changing the
names, but didnotknowwhen.Myonly con-cern is people don’t really know who Imam
Haron was.”Haron was the leader of the Al’Jaamiah
Mosque in Stegman Road, Claremont.Masoet says: “My father was one of the
most prominent Muslim teachers duringthe ’60s and was known for his political in-volvement, whenMuslim leaders were gen-erally silent about the injustices of apart-heid.”On 28 May 1969, Haron was summoned to
Caledon Square in the CBD for a conversa-tion with unknown government officials. He never returned to his Crawford home.Haron was held in police custody, where
hewas tortured by the secret police, for fourmonths. He died on 27 September 1969.The inquest report into Haron’s death
states he sustained the many body bruisesafter slipping down a flight of stairs.Chairperson of the Greater Lynfrae Civic
Association, Alan Jackson, says the Cityasked the community to suggest possiblenames for the road some years ago.“Our association screened the film The
Imam and I, which was directed and pro-duced by Khalid Shamis, one of Haron’sgrandsons,” Jackson says.“We did this to educate residents about
him during the name change discussions. We’re hoping to screen it again now that thename change has occurred.”The name change will also affect busi-
nesses in the area.Google Maps has not yet amended the
name of the road on it’s website, while Ton-nesen Midas manager Richard Williamssays it hasnot affectedhis business yet. “It’sdefinitely going to affect new customers, be-cause we still refer to the road asLansdowne Road and not Imam HaronRoad. And people who are not familiar withthis area only know this as LansdowneRoad,” Williams says.V To view a short promo video of the Imam and Ivisit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCkUSn_JbJI

HARFIELD VILLAGE: DIGGING DEEP
Parks revamp planNADINE MOODIE
HARFIELD Village resi-dents are getting theirhands dirty in an initia-
tive to landscape the parks inthe area.
The community aims to land-scape all four parks in the vil-lage. This includes those onSurrey, Princes, Purley andHampstead roads.
Chairperson of Friends ofHarfield Village Parks, IngridRiemeyer says the plans for theparks on Princes and Surreyroads have been drafted by a lo-cal resident, who is also a land-scape architectural student.
“We are in the process of ob-taining quotes to start fundrais-ing. We don’t know the finalcosts yet, but we’re very excitedabout this initiative,” she says.
Mayoral Committee memberfor Community Services andSpecial Projects, Belinda Walk-er, says City Parks would liketo see local communities con-tribute towards the develop-ment of quality open spaces, asthis forms part of the City’sCommunity Gardens project.
“The City does not have ade-quate capital for these kinds ofinitiatives. Applicants shouldconsider lobbying for fundingfrom the relevant ward council-lor’s budget.”
She adds that City Parks willmaintain all parks according tothe City’s minimum mainte-nance standards.
“Friends of Harfield Villagewill be required to enter into aco-operational agreement withthe district operations manageror area manager of the Parksdepartment to address any ad-ditional horticultural mainte-nance aspects,” says Walker.
Riemeyer says the residentsdecided each park will be land-scaped according to a differenttheme.
“The Surrey park will have awild flower theme and Princespark will be a children- themedpark.
“Purley park will be fash-ioned as a picnic park; andHampstead park will be a dogpark where residents can walktheir pets, and it will also playhost to our community events,”she says.
“This is a long-term projectfor the next four years, andwe’re hoping to landscape onepark each year. It will be sillyto take on too much right now,”she says.
Friends of Harfield VillageParks has included the commu-nity throughout the process ofcoming up with the designs.
“We’ve also launched a com-petition for the design of the en-trance at each park. It shouldreflect the character of eachpark. The person with the bestdesign stands to win a prize tothe value of R500,” adds Rie-meyer.V For more information contact IngridRiemeyer on 0 021 671 7578.
PLANS: The plan forupgrade of Princes Parkin Harfield Village.Friends of HarfieldVillage are determined tolandscape the parks inthe area over the nextfour years.

PINELANDS: SPORT GROUND UPGRADE
Council to reviewfootie club’s leaseNADINE MOODIE
THE SECURITY measures of ClydePinelands Football Clubhouse andsports grounds has been an ongoing
concern to Pinelands residents. The City of Cape Town is in the process
of reviewing their lease agreement withClyde Pinelands Football Club, one of thecity’s oldest sports clubs.
The City will now accept responsibilityfor the fields and maintenance of the the ar-ea.
Ward councillor Brian Watkyns who wel-comes the review says he is determined tohave a meeting with the council, the resi-dents and football club about the safety ofthe sports grounds, football players and res-idents who live in this area.
“This review will allow other clubs tomake use of the clubhouse on a permanentbasis too,” he says.
“The City has also proposed erecting afence around the main fields and in theparking area.”
Chairperson for the football club, CraigFurlong says he understands why the Citywants to intervene and take over the lease
agreement.“The area has always been a high crime
area. I’m really happy the council has comeon board to assist us. The building has beenburgled and vandalised a number of times,”he says. Mayoral Committee member forCommunity Services and Special Projects,Belinda Walker says, last year the club-house was severely vandalised and the Cityhad to step in. “The repairs done at the facil-ity included electrical, roof and ceiling, plumbing repairs as well as repainting thebuilding. The main field is now in an im-maculate condition.”
The department will also install irriga-tion systems on two fields and laser levelone field, as well as a gate at the front en-trance to control access and increase secu-rity.
It is believed that the club will pay a tariffto the council to use the facility.
Furlong says the club does not mind pay-ing the tariff to the Council, because they’veonly been helpful throughout the entireprocess of negotiating the way forward.
Watkyns urges the Council and residentsto speak about the high crime rate in thisparticular Pinelands section.

SACS outclassed by Paul RoosLIAM MOSES
SACS have been forced to re-evaluatetheir match preparation after a thump-ing against Paul Roos Gymnasium
(PRG) in their second match of the schoolrugby season. The Newlands school succumbed to a 0-32
drubbing at home to the Stellenbosch sideonSaturday, inwhatwas their seconddefeatafter losing 22-26 away at BolandAgricultur-al earlier this month.GraemeWepenaar, SACSheadcoach, says
the heavy defeat has given the team causefor serious introspectionaheadof their thirdmatch, away against Strand High School, this Saturday.“The only positive that we can take out of
this is that we have learned a hard lesson,”says Wepenaar.“We have to take what we can out of it,
think what we did wrong, what was goingon our minds leading up to the game, howwe practised and just make sure we don’t dothe same this week. We just have to makesure we improve.”Wepenaar’s side looked to bematching the
visitors tackle for tackle and crash ball forcrash ball in the first 20 minutes of Satur-day’s tough encounter. But the difference in class started to show
in the final ten minutes of the first-half,when PRG flyhalf Aidynn Cupido nailed adrop-kick, helped set up a try for flank andskipper Christo van der Merwe and goaledthe subsequent conversion. At 0-10 SACS still looked capable of fight-
ing their way back into the encounter, but
the first leaks in the floodgates started to ap-pear around sixminutes into the second-halfwhen a penalty from Cupido brought thescores to 0-13.Van der Merwe and Cupido stretched the
deficit even further in the 15th minute, withanother converted try, before right wingJoel Heugh crossed for the third – whichwent unconverted – and Herschell Jantjiesand Cupido hammered home the final nailwith another try and conversion, respective-ly.Cupido can take many of the plaudits for
his side’s performance, but SACS will bethankful that the young pivot missed threepenalties and a conversion in the game (11points) to help keep the scoreline slightlymore respectable.Wepenaar was disappointed with his
side’s performance and gave PRG their duefor a complete performance.“We were hoping to give a better account
of ourselves and wewere hoping to win. The0-32 scoreline reflects the fact that we didn’treally pitchup on the day. Theywere the bet-ter side and they beat us all over the field,”he says.“Our hooker got injured in the first
minute, whichmeant our set-piece (play) fellto pieces. At the breakdown they were justhungrier and beat us every time. Theycleaned us up and we couldn’t get anyrhythm in our game.”Wepenaar adds his team also picked up
four other injuries to the forward pack – se-verity yet to be confirmed – and could strug-gle against Strand on Saturday, as the squadlacks depth.

Young cricketers fall shortLIAM MOSES
THE South African Invitation Schools teamhave returned home proud, but disappoint-ed, after claiming second place at the ninthannual Tuanku Ja’Affar InternationalCricket Challenge.SA participated in the tournament for the
fourth time and would have been confidentof their ability to claim the title, after losingto Sri Lanka in the final last year. However, it was not to be and the result
turned out to be a repeat of the previousyear, with the Sri Lankans defending theirtitle.Assistant coach Ismail Teladia says the
players lacked the big match temperamentto triumph in the final.“Our players came short mentally. I don’t
think our players at under-15 level and, gen-erally, at school level play enough pressuregames,” says Teladia.“The school’s league is focused on the 65
over format that creates very little pressureon the players. There is no doubt that wehave the talent, but we lack themental abili-ty.”The under-15 tournament, hosted in Ma-
laysia every year, features some of the
world’s best young cricketers from coun-tries such as Sri Lanka, India and Bangla-desh.The SA team started their tournament
with against wins the hosts and Singapore, and a loss to the eventual winners in thegroup stages, before scraping past India inthe semi-finals.Teladia says the team let themselves down
in the final, citing the players’ inability todeal with Sri Lanka’s array of five spinnersas the reason for the defeat.“When you are playing in sub-continent
conditions the opposition will normallythrow in two or three spinners. In localschools cricket the teams will usually haveone or two spinners,” he says.“Our boys are not able to cope with it.
There is no respite, so they try to hit them-selves out of trouble and lose their wickets.Facing regular spin is something our boysneed to learn.”This year’s team featured players from
Rondebosch Boys’, Bishops, Wynberg Boys’and one player from Spine Road High inMitchell’s Plain.Wynberg’s Jesse Christians captained the
side, withRondebosch’s SuhailWhite as sec-ond in command.

RUGBY: CITY BOWL DERBY
Hammies hammer SK WalmersLIAM MOSES
HAMILTONS fired a warning shot attheir Super League A title rivals aftera crushing victory over City Bowl
neighbours SK Walmers on Saturday.Hammies scored six tries and conceded
just one, to beat the Green Point club 39-11.But despite the comprehensive victory headcoach Anton Moolman believes his sidehave still not hit top gear.“Durb-Bell, Stellenbosch and SKWalmers
have all enjoyed the Varsity Cup and Com-munity Cup, so they have had a number oftight games under their belt,” he says.“We have had friendlies here in Cape
Town – the majority of which we won by 60or 70 points.“Our first test was last week, against Stel-
lenbosch, and besides two soft tries, wewerereally competitive in the game. So our sea-
sonwill get better. We just have tomake surewe continue the climb in terms of perform-ance and execution.”Moolman adds, although his side is cur-
rently focused on short-term goals, they willbe challenging for the title if they improveas expected.“Ifwedo that, comeof the endof the season
we will be up there and challenging. But forme, it’s game by game – and Durb-Bell nextweek.”Hammies dominated the derby from the
kickoff and scored just seconds into thegame, when fullback Jonno van Zyl crossedover in the corner. The hosts increased their lead with a pen-
alty fromWilko deWet and a try by left wingDougal Robertson, but SK responded withtwo penalties from the boot of scrumhalfMorne Adams. This left the half-time scorereading 13-6.
Hammies again crossed soon after thebreak, with Van Zyl dotting down aroundthe third minute, but the visitors hit backwith a try from right wing Layton Bezuiden-hout.Walmers struggled to defend againstHam-
iltons’ power at the contact point, intelligentattacking around the fringes and skilful off-loading.The game was then put to bed when Ham-
mies scored three tries in the last 20 min-utes, with Dustin Jinka, Nicholas Pearsonand Waldo Prinsloo all claiming five-point-ers.Moolmanchalkedup thewinas “oneof the
more resounding” victories over SKW dur-ing his tenure as coach.“I enjoy trying to play a total brand of rug-
by. In the off-season we have worked hardon trying to take our game to a different lev-el,” he says.
“Last year is in the past, but there weregames that we lost very narrowly. The guysare focused and they have set their seasongoals, and they work hard at training. Youcan only play as well as your opponents letyou and I thought we created good momen-tum today. When you havemomentum youroff-loads start to work, allowing the guys toenjoy the gamemore than when on the backfoot.”Hamiltons face another stern test this Sat-
urday, when they travel to Durbanville-Bel-lville.Durb-Bell, who finished second in the
league last year, claimed a narrow 20-18 winover UCT on Saturday.V Meanwhile, in Super League B, Primrose beat Handsand Heart 4519 to record their fourth consecutive victory. The win has cemented Primrose’s position at thetop of the log and further enhanced their title credentials.
