PEOPLE Against Gangsterismand Drugs (Pagad) says it is-
committed to continuing itsquest to rid communities ofdrugs through peaceful protest, with the backing of the policeand community.
Community police forums andthe police say they will support themovement “as long as they act with-in the framework of the law”.
“Pagad is active again followingthe cry from the community,” saysOsman Sahib, an executive mem-ber of Pagad.
“In meetings held over a couple ofmonths it was established that thecommunity is frustrated as everysecond house in Sherwood Park hasa drug addict. Everybody is affectedby drugs; youngsters are stealingfrom their parents and young girlsare selling their bodies to supporttheir habit.”
Sahib says people are fed-up withdrug abuse which has sweptthrough the community.
“Even parents who have raisedtheir children with a moral up-bringing have seen them turn todrugs. The community feels help-less as they say the police, politi-cians and even religious leaders areunable to help with the scourge ofdrugs and save their children.”
A 500-strong march was held onWednesday in Sherwood Park, wherePagadprotestedagainst drugdealers.
Sahib said this is the first of manysuch marches in the area.
“AtWednesday’smarchwhen thecommunity approached a drugdealer, he admitted that he was sell-ing and said he would stop.”
Sahib says Pagad will do whatev-
er it takes to stop the scourge ofdrugs.”
When asked what Pagad’s anti-drug action would entail, Sahib re-sponded: “They will be applyingenough pressure on the authoritiesto protect women and children andthe marches will be done within theframework of the law.”
People’s Post previously report-ed that Mitchell’s Plain police ex-pressed a zero tolerance approachtowards Pagad after its members il-legally gathered in Lentegeur to is-sue a warning to an alleged drugdealer (“Police get tough on Pagad”,18 August 2009).
The Mitchell’s Plain police, to-gether with Metro Police, warnedthe crowd that the gathering was il-legal.
Members of the crowed reported-ly threatened to kill police officers, whereupon police dispersed thegathering with rubber bullets anda stun grenade, and arrested 58 Pa-gad members.
All 58 appeared in the Mitchell’sPlain Magistrate’s Court and werecharged with intimidation of policemembers and contravening the Ille-gal Gatherings Act. They were re-leased on R300 bail each and thecase was postponed until 1 October2009.
People’s Post tried to establish theoutcome of the court appearance in2009, but police were unable to as-sist. However, Sahib says the caseswere thrown out of court due to lackof evidence.
“We will always follow the properprocedureswhen it comes tohavingmarches and rely on the support ofthe authorities, but we as the com-munity cannot sit still and pretendnothing’s happening,” he said.
He added: “Pagad had results thatno other movement has had. When
we came out 14 years ago, most drugdealers stopped selling. This isn’tsomething we are doing for our-selves; we have children and fami-lies and we need to end drug abuseand gangsterism. It has been prov-en that drug dealing can be stoppedwhen pressure is applied.”
People’s Post tried to gain com-ment from Major General JeremyVearey, Mitchell’s Plain clusterhead about Pagad’s plan, but wasunable to do so by the time of goingto print.
When the paper asked Sahibabout Pagad’s silence over the pastyear, he responded that they “havenever been quiet, but have alwaysheld meetings, but the media onlybecame aware of them when march-es were held”.
“When people reach out to us, weare there to see how we can help. The movement is reacting on peo-ple’s vulnerability.”
Manenberg police station’s Cap-
tain Wynand Muller said the policewill support the marches as Pagadhas the same goal in mind.
Referring to last week’s Sher-wood Park march, Muller said: “Pa-gad has a concern over drug dealingand the community cameout to sup-port them. A strong police contin-gent watched over the march. There were top police members, members from the police and dogunit and a chopper on standby.”
Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Ath-lone police spokesperson, says theywill too support the organisation, but it must be within the frame-work of the police.
“We will support any organisa-tion which wants to rid areas ofdrugs and crime, but they must actwithin the South African law andtheConstitutionandrespect all peo-ple’s rights.
“No vigilante groups will be sup-ported or those who think they areabove the law. If organisations do,
action will be taken against them.”Hanif Loonat, chairperson of the
Nyanga Cluster Community PoliceForum said: “I believe there is aplace for Pagad in these challengingtimes.
“My plea to Pagad is let us as law-abiding citizens raise our concernswithin the ambit of the law, as wasdemonstrated in the march.
“Let Pagad assure and build thetrust between the authorities andthe organisation. Helpless commu-nities are looking to Pagad for as-sistance in the eradication ofdrugs.”
. Pagad will be holding a seriesof meetings with the objective of es-tablishing branches in various are-as.
A meeting was held last night inLavender Hill to discuss how Pagadcan assist following the gang vio-lence which has been ongoing for ayear and has claimed the lives of sixpeople over the weekend.

Lansdowne officerattacked during raidTAMMY PETERSEN
A POLICE detective escaped serious inju-ry on Tuesday when a raid at Flamingo in-formal settlement led to residents becom-ing violent and attacking a team of 10Lansdowne officers.
The operation, which sawthree properties being searchedfor selling liquor illegally, wasa check on homes previouslybust for selling alcohol withouta licence.
Police spokesperson, War-rant Officer Robert Lakey saysa “customer”, working under-cover during the sting, visiteda shack and bought a 500 ml bot-tle of white wine with a markedbank note.
“After he returned, we movedin to search the premises. Asmall bottle of liquorwas found, but thanks to a tip-off, wesearched two neighbouringproperties, where the shebeen-er was allegedly storing herstash in case of a raid,” he ex-plains.
A total of 42 five-litre cans of wine were con-fiscated from the home of a woman living fivedoors away from the suspect, and an addition-al 16 five-litre cans were removed from thehome of an opposite neighbour.
“The woman was arrested and as we took
her to the van, which was parked on Flamin-go Road, the residents, many of whom weredrunk, started becoming abusive and throw-ing stones at the police,” Lakey says.
The crowd chanted slogans containingcurses, screaming that they were not scaredof the law.
“As the liquor was carriedout, the people started throw-ing stones at the officers, caus-ing the officers to threaten thegroup with legal action. Oneparticularly drunk and violentmanwascuffedand taken to thepolice vehicle.”
But incensed locals refusedto let the matter die down andassembled at the entrance ofthe squatter camp, where twomarked vans and a detective’scar were parked.
“When the detective was inhis car, a man, standing be-tween the shacks, threw a brickat the windscreen of the vehi-cle, causing it to shatter andspray shards of glass in hisface. The brick missed him bycentimetres,” he says.
The remaining officers attempted to appre-hend the man, who escaped by running be-tween the shacks. “We believe that he washiding in one of the homes, but residents re-fused to give their cooperation during thesearch. We appeal to anyone with informa-tion to contact the station so that the guilty
party can be brought to book. What happenedto the officer was a clear indication that theperson has no respect for the law and shouldface the consequences.”
The 34-year-old shebeener, who was arrest-ed in the past and slapped with fines, wascharged and detained until she appeared inthe Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Thurs-day.
The man arrested for being drunk in publicand public violence was held at the station forfour hours and given a R150 fine.
Lakey says two men had been arrested ear-lier that day at Nerissa Flats in Lansdowneafter they sold beer to a man working withpolice.
Seven bottles of beer, 18 beer crates and 142empty bottles were taken from the flat.
The two also appeared in the Wynberg Mag-istrate’s Court on Thursday.
People’s Post was unable to confirm the out-come of either appearance as the dockets hadnot yet returned from court at our time of go-ing to print. Majidie Abrahams, the chairper-son of the Lansdowne Community Police Fo-rum, says the incident is an indication of theblatant lack of respect for the police.
“People with grievances or concerns haveto take it through the correct channels. Thereare proper routes for dissatisfied residents tofollow to ensure that all issues are resolved.Something like this is especially bad for themorale of people who put their lives on theline on a daily basis to prevent crime.”

Man claims police ‘torture’TAMMY PETERSEN
SUFFOCATED, beaten and tortured inhis own home – all at the hands of thepolice.
This is the claim of Ismail Moses (26), ataxi owner from Tagus Road, Manenberg, who claims officers from the police’s crimeintervention unit spent two hours trying toget him to admit to housing a cache of ille-gal guns inside his wendy house.
Ismail’s aunt, Warda Moses, says she andher 10-year-old son were in bed at about19:45 when she heard a bang at the door asabout 12 uniformed officers barged into herhome on Tuesday 21 February.
“They camestorming inhere, scaringmyouma – who was watching TV in the lounge– half to death. One of the policemen cameinto my room and pointed a gun at my sonand I while the other kicked the door of theother room while telling my ouma to shutup.”
She continues that the officers rushedout the back door to the wendy house while“holding (them) hostage” in her bedroom.
Ismail says the officers grabbed him andquestioned him. “The only thing theyasked me was ‘Waar is die guns?’ and beforeI even had the opportunity to answer, oneof them pistol-whipped me. They repeatedthe question and I hadn’t even opened mymouth yet when they hit me again,” he
says. Ismail, who admits he spent threeyears in Pollsmoor for theft after he and agroup of friends stole a man’s cellphone inSea Point when he was 21, says the officersgrabbed a plastic bag and put it over hishead. “While they tried to suf-focate me, another officer tiedmy hands with cable ties,” hesays, showing marks on hiswrists. “They threw water onme, wrapped me in a blanketand started beating and kick-ing me. Every time I wouldpass out they would removethe bag and throw water at meuntil I came around beforeputting the bag over my faceagain. They tortured me.”
Inside the house, his grand-mother, Gadija, was in a stateas she witnessed the beatingfrom where she was seated inthe lounge.
“They hit and hit and hithim. How could they do that?”the 76-year-old says. “I toldthem to stop but all they saidto me was ‘Hou jou mond’.”
Warda says her son was in-consolable as the officer con-tinued to point the gun at Is-mail and his mother. They refused to let ei-ther leave the room. “When I tried to phonesomeone to fetch him, an officer grabbedthe phone and threw it in the passage. Ididn’t know what to do. He’s only 10!”
Eventually an officer took the child out-side and a neighbour collected him.
While some of the officers allegedly beatIsmail, others started wrecking his wendy
house, smashing in the floor with a crow-bar and ripping his ceiling boards and di-viders apart.
“I could do nothing. They beat me andbeat me for about two hours and when they
found nothing, they untied myhands and left me lying there. They walked out without anexplanation and not once didanyone even show a searchwarrant.”
Warda says the squad thensimply walked out, telling herthat they had received a tip-offthat Ismail was in possessionof illegal guns.
“One of them, the only fe-male officer, then had thecheek to ask me if I was al-right. How could they ask methat? Is what they did alright?I didn’t even bother to answerher.”
Ismail was taken to Gates-ville Medical Centre, where hewas treated for severe brui-sing, two blue eyes, a chest in-jury and a minor head injury.
He paid R500 from his ownpocket for the hour-long con-sultation.
“We laid a charge of assault with theManenberg police, and they were very co-operative. What happened was disgusting– how dare they come in here and do whatthey like?”
Manenberg police spokesperson War-rant Officer Llewellyn Lakay says the mat-ter is under investigation and was unableto comment further.

Bursary trust draws250 applicationsA RECORD number of 254 appli-cations were received for thisyear’s Imam Abdullah HaronEducation Trust (IAHET) bursa-ries at the closing date of 25 Feb-ruary.
The bursaries, which areopen to all tertiary level studentsirrespective of race, gender orcreed, are worth R5 000 each.
Junaid Daries, head of the IA-HET’s education sub-committee,said the quality and variety ofapplications will make the taskof short-listing candidates andawarding the bursaries very dif-ficult. “The number of applica-tions received, which is up sig-nificantly from last year’s figureof 176, is both a reflection of thegrowing profile of the IAHET,which is now in its fifth year of
operation, as well as a sign of thetough economic times. “We arehappy that so many of our youthare pursuing tertiary studiesand even though the bursarydoesn’t cover all their fees, itdoes make a significant contri-bution to meeting their financialcommitments.”
Daries pointed out that short-listed candidates will be called tointerviews between 26 Marchand 25 April and that successfulapplicants should be notified bythe first week of May. “Those ap-plicants who have not been con-tacted by 26 March should acceptthat their applications were un-successful. Because all our mem-bers hold full-time jobs we sim-ply don’t have the time or capaci-ty to notify each applicant.”
Fire destroys family’s homeTAMMY PETERSEN
A HOME it took a mother alifetime to build was re-
duced to ashes in less than halfan hour when a fire destroyed acouncil flat in Soetwater Courton Saturday night.
Ruwayda Blankenberg (52) satoutside her once immaculate homefor the duration of the weekend, buteven her concerted efforts didn’tstop thieves from stealing pots anditems which could still be used.
Blankenberg, who lives in the flatwith her grandchildren and whosedaughter inhabits a wendy housebehind the property, says she re-turned home from her sister’s fu-neral in Atlantis at about 18:00 that
evening. “My daughter had alreadyleft for work and there was nobodyhome. It had been a long day so Iwent to my room to relax,” she ex-plains.
Her grandchildren – aged seven, four, three and two, were visitingfamily for the weekend.
“I was getting ready to go to bedwhen I decided to make a cup of tea. When I got to the kitchen, there wasa thick cloud of smoke.
“When I opened the back door tosee where it was coming from, theflames started crawling into thehouse.”
A panic-stricken Blankenberggrabbed the keys to the front door’ssecurity gate.
“I was so scared. I tried to unlockthe gate but I couldn’t get it to open.
I started screaming for help fromthe open door and the neighbourscame running, carrying buckets ofwater. By this time the flames hadalready moved through the house.”
When she eventually managed toopen the gate, hordes of locals werewaiting for her outside, supportingher as she watched the flames lickat her home.
“There was nothing we could do.The fire brigade arrived and triedto save my house but it was toolate.”
The cause of the fire is under in-vestigation.
Sections of two wendy houses onneighbouring properties were alsocharred.
But the heroics of the residents ofSoetwater Court were not limited tocarrying water and supporting aneighbour.
Charles Williams (69) who livesnext door to Blankenberg, says herealised on Saturday that he had“neighbours in a million”.
As the fire blazed next door, resi-dents, who thought Williams mightbe sleeping, smashed in his win-dows and kicked down his burglarbars in an attempt to get inside thehouse and carry him to safety.
Soraya Wilkinson says that afterremoving the burglar bars, localswere still unable to enter the flat. They ran around the back to try toget in through the gate and foundCharles cleaning his car. “He didn’teven realise there was a fire onlymetres away.”
Blankenberg visited the localrent office yesterday to give a thor-ough report on the incident but itis not yet clear when she will moveback into her home. Her daughter
was given a starter kit, consistingof metal sheets, plastic sheeting andother materials to build a structure.A food parcel was also provided bythe city’s Disaster Risk Manage-ment Department.
Ward councillor, AbduragiemOrrie, says he is working with theCity in an attempt to find Blanken-berg a vacant house or flat “as amatter of urgency”, where she willstay until her flat is repaired.
“I also did an appeal on the radiofor donations and I will be collect-ing a fridge and stove which some-one donated to her. We hope to gether back on her feet as soon as pos-sible.”
He says neighbouring homes
would also be repaired by the Coun-cil.“The residents living in thestructures on the neighbouringproperties will also be given metalsheets, plastic and materials to re-build their homes,” he says.
But while her future still remainsuncertain, Blankenberg says sheowes her neighbours her life.
“I’m just happy that I made it outalive. The support I received fromeveryone in the court was amazing. They have been giving me food, keeping me company and doing allthey possibly can to make thingseasier for me. They are lifesavers.”
. Anyone able to donate clothes, food or old furniture is asked tophone Blankenberg on 082 543 2371.

Maternity home ready to deliverCAPE TOWN’s first private, non-profit maternity home was offi-cially launched on Sunday 27February in Rondebosch East.
Al-Nisa Maternity Home is a mid-wife-led, women-only facility whichoffers holistic antenatal, birth andpostnatal care to women with low-risk pregnancies.
“We want to provide a supportiveenvironment that establishes thedignity and reverence of the birth-ing process,” says Dr Unwarr Ad-am, the founder of the home.
“Our care will be provided byskilled midwives using best-prac-tice natural birthing methods bene-ficial to both the mother and baby.”
The concept of a maternity homefirst took root over 30 years ago, when Dr Adam ran the obstetricunit in a Transkei hospital.
He noticed a “huge disparity” inthe level of service offered by gov-ernment hospitals compared to themidwife-driven obstetrics unit run by nunsin other hospitals.
“Thenuns cared for their patients, protect-ed their modesty and provided a valuableservice,” said Dr Adam.
Adam’s own children were born in mater-nity homes such as these and from this, hisdream to establish a similar facility wasborn.
The Adam family purchased the RokebyRoad property in 1992, and after licensingand rezoning was approved, constructioneventually began in 2006.
Today, Al-Nisa (which means “The Wom-en” in Arabic) has eight beds for antenataland postnatal care, two delivery rooms, twoassessment rooms and a nursery. The home, designed by Dr Adam’s architect daughter,Adila Adam, also includes a functioningkitchen for use by patients and a landscapedcourtyard, which adds to the tranquillityand homeliness of the environment.
The hospital also offers the services of ageneral practitioner, lactation counselling, physiotherapy and ultrasonography.
The Al-Nisa medical team is further sup-
ported by an advisory team of consultingdoctors, which includes a gynaecologist, ob-stetrician and paediatrician.
Adam emphasised that the hospital wasset up as a not-for-profit facility which pro-vides a comfortable yet affordable service.
Antenatal visits with a midwife are pricedat R100 per visit, while Al-Nisa’s completematernity care package – which includesfive antenatal visits, the delivery and twopost-natal visits with the baby – is priced atR5 500.
The institution offers a payment plan forpatients who have booked the complete ma-ternity care package.
Since the facility is only geared for low-risk pregnancies, patients will be trans-ferred to the relevant government hospitalor to the patient’s preferred private hospitalin case of birth complications.
Al-Nisa was inaugurated when it deliv-ered its first baby on Tuesday 22 February– a healthy 3.2kg baby girl.
For more information on the facility call(021) 696-8892 or visit www.alnisamaternity-home.co.za.

Strike terrorBELEAGUERED commuters are onceagain getting the short end of the publictransport stick as a citywide taxi strike gotunder way yesterday (Monday).
Members of the SA National Taxi Coun-cil (Santaco) protested about “draconian”traffic laws and the red tape and “sloppi-ness” around the issuing of operating li-cences by provincial government.
Santaco secretary general Philip Taai-bosch says the Western Cape “is the onlyprovince in South Africa where taxi opera-tors are harassed in such a big way”.
Taxi drivers are entitled to protest aboutmatters affecting their livelihoods, butpeacefully so. That the strike turned vio-lent on its first daydisplays ablatant disre-gard for the government’s warning thatSantaco will be held personally responsi-ble for any violence.
Even the National Taxi Alliance’s urg-ing taxi drivers “not do anything and topark the taxis at ranks or at home” fell ondeaf ears.
Many taxi drivers are notoriously reck-less. Their conduct during strikes bearstestimony to their overall lack of regardfor themselves, their passengers and fel-low road users.
They threaten the very commuters whofaithfully support them and rely on themas their only mode of transport from thetownships to work.
Among the alarming incidents reportedsince the strike began: a bread truck wasset alight; vehicles were set alight andstoned by striking drivers; stone-throwingoccurred in Fish Hoek and along Klipfon-tein Road; Golden Arrow buses werestoned on Lansdowne Road.
As with previous taxi strikes, this strikewas characterised on its first day by vio-lence, intimidation, destruction and op-portunistic crime – none of which will gar-ner sympathy or even empathy.

. To the grandmother driving a white car,you are irresponsible to leave two boys, ap-proximate age 7, and a girl aged 4, alone inthe car while parked in Kenilworth parkingbays on Monday 7 March, while you did yourbusiness inside. You were parking at the Fuji-film entrance at the time. They don’t deservea hiding. You grandma, deserve a scoldingand a hiding. Had I had the time, I would havewaited for you, I would. Any child that is inyour care, you must take responsibility andownership for, and look after them properly.Don’t endanger our children any further thanwhat they already have to live with. Don’t youadd to the statistics of crime and violencewhere the kids are concerned. It obviouslydoesn’t bother you that somebody could havestolen or hurt them. If only you know how an-gry I get when people like you leave kids thatage unattended.

. Vandalism at state facilities is a greatconcern. I think it would help if security cam-eras are installed insideandoutside thebuild-ings and a security monitor deployed wherethere is not anyone on duty, and they canmonitor and communicate with their col-leagues. I am sure this will stop vandalism inits tracks. Concerned health worker

The subtle touches ofThe subtle touches of OranjeOranjeBRIAN GAFFNEY
TWO Dutch legends whose names areprinted in gold in the annals of Neth-
erlands soccer history are close to beingacclaimed heroes – 9 000km from theirnative land.
For Foppe de Haan and his fellow country-men Ruud Krol – the coaches of Ajax CapeTown FC and Orlando respectively – the hon-our of walking the red carpet to the champi-ons’ rostrum in May will be deserved for thetwo seasoned coaches.
Indeed, either of their faces could be mir-rored in the sterling silver trophy that is atstake for the Premier Soccer League champi-ons for the 2010/2011 season.
The destiny of the coveted cup will ofcourse be influenced by the result of the clashbetween Ajax and Pirates at Newlands Stadi-um tomorrow (Wednesday), starting at 19:30.
In the fiercely-contested league champion-ship, pacesetters Pirates – with 50 points inthe bag are a point ahead of Ajax, whileMamelodi Sundowns on 47 points and KaizerChiefs on 46 points are also in the race, after24 matches.
The neck-and-neck tussle prompts De Haanto concede that “nothing less than victory”will serve the Ajax cause.
De Haan’s no-nonsense approach when itcomes to the game has transformed Ajax intoone of the most exciting teams to watch in theleague this season.
His achievements include coaching theNetherlands to the UEFA European under-21champions titles in 2006 and 2007, after serv-ing as the head coach of Heerenveen FC for20 seasons.
And those successful experiences has inev-itably helped De Haan to keep his youngcharges focused on the arduous task ofmatching Pirates – buoyed by a 3-0 first
round win in Johannesburg inOctober.
The rapid development ofplayers like Thulani Serero,Khama Billiat, SameehgDoutie, Sonwabile Lolo andGranwald Scott has markedAjax’s progress thus far.
Soweto-born Serero (21) andBilliat (21) from Zimbabwe(21) have each scored vitalgoals, while the pacy Doutie(22) is enjoying his best seasonsince joining Ajax at age 17.
Their efficiency is matchedby Kensington-born midfield-er Scott and defender Lolo, whom Ajax nabbed from Afri-can Tribes amateurs in Khay-elitsha.
The efforts of Tembinkosi“Terror” Fanteni and Sereroto hit the target 11 and eighttimes respectively this seasonalso augurs well for the match.
The not-so-good news for DeHaan is that the suspendedDoutie will miss the crucialshowdown.
And Krol? the Pirates men-tor was capped 83 times for theNetherlands and representedthe Dutch in two World Cups.
He was also a member of the
star-studded Ajax-Amsterdam FC side thatwon the European Cup for three consecutiveyears (1971-1973) – missing out on the 1971 fi-nal due to a fractured leg.
Notably in his heyday the versatile Krolcould be depended on to play in all defensiveand midfield positions for club and country.
So no wonder Pirates boasts one of the bestdefensive records in the league this sea-son – thanks mainly to Krol’s coaxing of de-fensive midfielder Andile Jali (21) and left-back Reuben Cloete into tough ball winners.
Pirates have scored 34 times and conceded16 goals while Ajax, on the other hand, havehit the target 36 times but have conceded 24goals.
This of course is a worry for De Haan andgoalkeeper Hans Vonk – his custodian atHeerenveen FC for several years before hemoves Ajax Amsterdam FC and their CapeTown namesakes.
But De Haan showed his hand when the
long-serving flank defenders Brett Evans andNazeer Allie – who were sidelined with leg in-juries for several weeks – returned to theteam that lost 2-1 to Free State Stars in theNedbank Cup knockout championship overthe weekend.
The possible inclusion of both flank defend-ers with the centre back duo of Derek Des-camp and Clayton Daniels could be De Haan’sploy to snuff out Pirates’ free-scoring KatlegoMashego, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and TiouSegolele.
Pirates, since the inception of the PSL in1995, have been crowned champions in2001/02 and 2002/03, while placing second in2004/05, 2005/06 and 2008/09.
. Tickets at R60 (main stand only) and R40are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers branches.
