Chair’s Message Lin (Victor) Lan, P.Eng
Chair, Scarborough Chapter – PEO Thank you for electing me. Scarborough Chapter is one of the most active chapters in the PEO. In the past decade, we have successfully run many outreach programs for school students. In addition, we also have hosted great events for our members. Without the hard work of our board of executives and great efforts put on by our volunteers, these successes could not have been made. I thank all our volunteers and members of our board of executives.
In the remainder of 2019, we will focus on outreach programs that will increase number of participants, increasing public involvement, and we may also start outreach programs for the public so that the public can learn more about engineering.
This year, we will continue member service programs. We may have more seminars. If you are in knowledge of someone who can deliver on subjects of technical importance, please let us know. We are very keen on organising seminars for the benefit of our members. In this newsletter, I would like to specifically mention about the Licensure Assistance Program (LAP), which provides guidance to EITs. I request to the Professional Engineers to come forward and assist in the program by increasing our pool of mentors. Currently, Scarborough Chapter has 2296 engineers. Hope that more engineers will volunteer for the LAP program this year.
We, at Scarborough Chapter, constantly endeavor to offer professional networking opportunities. We welcome new ideas and suggestions and the board of executives look forward to working together so that we, the engineers, can be better known in the public. Please visit our website to get to know your chapter activities and how to get involved.

BBC is one of most popular programs in the elementary
schools in Scarborough. Through the contest, students learn
basic knowledge of structural mechanics and loads.
n the same day, PEO Scarborough Chapter conducted
the Seismic Resistance Structure Contest (SRSC)
simultaneously with Bridge Building Competition
(BBC). It was the 3rd year of the event. This event is conducted
for grades 7 and 8. 13 teams (35 students) participated in the
competition. Parents and teachers as well as city councillors
and MPPs attended the meeting.
The event consisted of four sections. The 1st section is a
presentation about seismic structure and earthquake. The 2nd
section is inspection. The 3rd section is judge evaluation. The
last section is testing.
There are two categories of prizes: judges prizes and
performance prizes.

The 5th Modular Electronic Engineering (MEE) Competition for Grade 5 & 6
very year PEO Scarborough chapter hosts MEE
competition for Grade 5 and 6 students to introduce
them to the concept of building electronic modules
using electronic components in the circuits. Students are
taught how different components are assembled in a circuit
to create simple devices that perform certain functions on
command. Each year a different challenge is brought for
the students to make the involvement interesting for the
participants.
In the first year we provided a challenge for the students
to build an ROV i.e. a remotely operated vehicle which was
run on a track with obstacles. The judging criteria was the
length of travel, time taken to travel that length, and the
obstacles cleared or met. In the second year we brought
the challenge for the students to build an amphibian
vehicle, one that operates on land as well as water. The
judging criteria were again the distance travelled, time
taken, and the obstacles covered or met.
In the third year, we will bring the concept of driverless
cars.
Driverless cars would have a lot of sensors with
programming which control the various functions of the
cars. The presentation to students imparted the knowledge
of sensors and modular electronic engineering to build an
autonomous vehicle. Students enthusiastically built an
autonomous vehicle which was tested on 3 tracks prepared
by us.
This year students built a droid and had to maneuver the
droid remotely through different tasks. Students
outperformed the expectations and completed the tasks in
very short time.

GLP Activities at PEOSC
he Government Liaison Program popularly known as the GLP in PEO circles, was initiated in 2005 with well defined goals and objectives as to the role of PEO Chapters and their members, in furthering the role of
PEO by communicating effectively with the elected representatives. The primary goal of the GLP is to encourage members to establish and nurture relationships with the MPP’s in the different ridings that come under the chapter’s jurisdiction. To achieve this every chapter has a GLP team which has a chair who is normally a member of the Executive, with 2 to 3 volunteers. These volunteers actively involve themselves in attending the different events that the local MPP’s conduct for the community as well as invite and encourage MPP’s to attend the Chapter events. The Scarborough Chapter has had a very longstanding commitment to actively further the Chapter’s goals and bring its activities in the community. The Chapter members have from time to time taken efforts to monitor policy proposals and express their views to the MPP’s regarding proposals that affect the PEO and its regulatory role. They also endeavour to provide clarity on PEO’s policy positions to government policy makers. This years GLP activities started off on a loud note with the Annual Bridge Building competition and the Structural Resistance Competition conducted on March 30’th at the Scarborough Town Center, Council chambers which had an almost complete turnout of MPP’s and City Councillors. We are yet to establish contact with MPP Christina Mitas (Scarborough-Centre) and MPP Dolly Begum (Scarborough West) and look forward to more events in the Fall and winter and meaningful contacts and interactions with the MPP’s and the community. A PEO Scarborough Chapter table manned by volunteers and a banner at public events will help better showcase our Chapter’s events. Let’s get involved and make our GLP activities rise to higher levels of accomplishments. More information on GLP is available in the GLP manual on the PEO website.
Present were Hon Raymond Cho (MPP- Scarborough North), Hon Vijay Thanigasalam (MPP-Scarborough Rouge Park), Hon Mitzie Hunter (MPP-Scarborough Guildwood) , Hon Michael Thompson ( Deputy Mayor of Toronto), Hon Jim Karygiannis (Councillor for Scarborough Agincourt) and the newest Councillor from Scarborough Rouge Park, Hon Jennifer McKelvie. The Chapter executives had ample opportunities for networking as the MPP’s stayed for a while and participated in some testing, awarded certificates to the winners and interacted with students and parents as well. GLP members present were Chapter chair Victor Lin, Chapter Executive Rajendra Gadhvi and GLP member Samuel P. Jacob.
On May 22, Chapter GLP member Samuel Jacob represented the Chapter GLP team at the Scarborough Business association BBQ at Victoria Pub in Midland Ave. MPP Aris Babikan was present as well as longstanding PEO Scarborough member Jamie Libaque P.Eng. On June 23rd MPP Vijay Thanigasalam had his first Community BBQ at Adams Park which was well attended by over a thousand community members. Games, food, coffee and ice cream and other attractions provided an atmosphere of friendship and fellowship. Samuel Jacob once again took this opportunity to share some thoughts with the MPP and invited him to attend Chapter events. On June 8th we once again had the privilege of having MPP Aris Babikian (Scarborough-Agincourt) as the Guest of honour at the Annual License Certificate presentation of the new Professional Engineers of the Scarborough Chapter. This event was held at the Brighton Convention and event centre in Scarborough and was attended by GLP members Santosh Gupta and Rajendra Ghadvi. The PEO GLP program led by Jeanette Chau P.Eng. has allowed a budget of $200 per riding in the Chapter’s jurisdiction and is planning to provide lapel pins to members for better recognition and visibility in public spaces and functions. Members interested in joining this team are welcome to contact the Chapter chair, Lin Victor, Santosh Gupta (Chair-GLP) or any of the GLP sub committee.
