In 2008, PepsiCo approached Forum for the Future (Forum) for help assessing the impact of key environmental and health risks on its operations and stakeholders. The aim was to produce a global strategy that looked ahead to 2030 to maximise current and future opportunities and to minimise the twin risks of environmental and health issues.

Forum used a range of research and consultation methods to create a series of compelling future scenarios exclusively for the company.

The resulting Global Scenarios and Strategy 2030 identified the key issues that are likely to affect the company in the coming years, such as climate change, hunger and agricultural disruption.

It also demonstrated that the companies which are working now to overcome the sustainability challenges of the future will be the ones that prosper.

Among more than 100 interviewees to take part from the US, India, China, Latin America and Europe were PepsiCo Chair and CEO Indra Nooyi and former Norwegian Prime Minister and ex-Director General of the World Health Organisation, Gro Harlem Brundtland.

Working with Forum on Scenarios and Strategy 2030 helped PepsiCo leaders see their company in a very different light: shifting from a food and beverage manufacturer to an agricultural business reliant on land, soil and water.

As a result, PepsiCo set up a new Sustainable Agriculture team to help mitigate the supply chain risks of climate change and water scarcity, collaborating closely with farmers to trial innovative tools for more efficient crop production. One such tool is i-crop, which helps farmers decide when – and how – to use water to prevent waste.

The project has also contributed to the development of new PepsiCo environment, health and wellness strategies, and to new, ambitious targets to reduce carbon and water consumption. In 2014, Forum teamed up with PepsiCo’s Environmental Sustainability Committee to refresh the company’s

“Scenarios and Strategy 2030 was a professional and inspiring process that enables us to identify risks and opportunities that will impact the core business today and in the future. As a result, PepsiCo will be better prepared and stronger as a company.”

“I can’t express strongly enough my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the work that the Forum team has done on this project. The incredible amount that we have achieved in such a short time is truly amazing... We’ve created a snowball effect with the organisation and had global reach like no other project I’ve seen. I am absolutely overjoyed at the results we’ve achieved.”

sustainability vision and goals, which prompted the business to explore becoming ‘net positive’. PepsiCo subsequently joined Forum’s Net Positive Group, which has been working with pioneering organisations to develop a radical new vision of business as a driver to replenish and restore the environment and reverse social inequality.
