WHY EL-Vs IN CITIES?

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 3

L-category vehicles are popular for personal and light goods transport in

many cities, but they typically have Internal Combustion Engines (pollution

and noise).

Electric L-category Vehicles (EL-Vs) have potential to replace cars and ICE L-

Vs and to complement public transport.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES?The shift to electro-mobility has so far focused on cars, public transport and

city logistics.

• EL-V adoption so far has been slow:

• low awareness

• lack of charging facilities

• lack of sharing schemes, etc.

THE ELVITEN PROJECT

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 4

“Electrified L-category Vehicles Integrated into Transport and Electricity

Networks”

• 3-year EU project (2017-2020)

• Seeks to realise the potential of EL-Vs by:

• Establishing usage schemes in six pilot cities (for personal transport

and light deliveries)

• Evaluating their impacts on travel and charging patterns, on the

overall effects on transport networks and city liveability.

• Aim is to integrate EL-Vs with existing transport networks.

CITY DATA COLLECTION

Congestion level - percentage extra time

Two examples:

Question: WOULD YOU USE AN EL-V SHARING SCHEME IF THERE WAS ONE IN YOUR CITY?

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 9

Statement (agree or not): “I WOULD FEEL

SAFE DRIVING ONE OF THESE VEHICLES”

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 10

Question: WOULD YOU CONSIDER USING A LIGHT

ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS A PART OF MULTI-MODAL JOURNEY, WITH FOR INSTANCE PUBLIC TRANSPORT?

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 11

MOST POPULAR MEASURES TO FACILITATE

EL-V USE (all cities)

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 12

FLEET OPERATOR INTERVIEWS

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 13

49 respondents by fleet managers:

• 20 currently use L-Vs (3 of them using EL-Vs)

• 7 currently use EVs (cars or vans)

• 22 do not use any

Example question: WOULD YOU CONSIDER CHANGING TO

ELECTRIC L-CATEGORY VEHICLES (at least for part of your fleet)?• 15 either already planning to use EL-Vs or looking at this option

• 25 would consider EL-Vs

• 3 would consider EVs but not EL-Vs

• 6 would not consider any electric vehicles

CONCLUSIONS - 1

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 14

• Bari, Rome, Genoa, Malaga, and Trikala had a large observed interest in

EL-V sharing schemes.

• Berlin and Trikala had the potential to increase their sharing scheme

usage by attracting users that were still unsure.

• A higher percentage of respondents in Berlin would either prefer to buy

their own or would not consider using them at all.

• Men were observed to be more inclined to use EL-Vs for trips related to

work or education purposes than women.

• Topography had some effect e.g. Genoa is very hilly and less suitable for

cycling; Bari and Malaga are much flatter.

• Berlin and Rome have the most comprehensive public transport: may be

a reason for the lower than average enthusiasm for EL-Vs.

CONCLUSIONS - 2

Session TS06, 17/09/2018, ITS World Congress , Copenhagen 15

• Berlin and Rome have the most comprehensive public transport: may be

a reason for the lower than average enthusiasm for EL-Vs.

• Sufficient electric charging infrastructure was a major factor where

improvements are needed in order to boost EV/EL-V use.

• Instead of owning EL-V vehicles, the majority of the respondents would

prefer to use shared or rented vehicles, and were likely to consider using

EL-Vs as part of a multimodal journey.

• A higher percentage of women and elderly declared “Don’t know”

across almost all the attributes.
