The story takes place in Paris in the year 1819, in a decrepit, dirty, ill-smelling

boardinghouse on the left bank of the Seine.

Mme. au!uer, a stingy old "ido" "ho o"ns the place, rules o#er her tenants. They

are people "ith modest means and desires, like Mlle. Michonneau, the old maid$

Poiret, a puppet-like human being$ and a young orphan, ictorine Taillefer. Three

tenants stand out in this company% &ug'ne de (astignac, a young student from the

pro#inces, of noble origin, but poor and eager to try his luck in the capital$ autrin,

the )strong) man, bon #i#ant and humorous, but mysterious and alarming$ and P're

respectable boardinghouse% +ld *oriot pressing sil#er dishes into ingots, autrin

furti#ely returning to the house in the middle of the night in spite of the bolteddoors, *oriot being #isited by pretty girls "hose bills he pays.

(astignac is going to find out the solution of one of the mysteries. Pursuing his

ambitions, he manages to be introduced into Parisian high society "ith the help of

his influential cousin, Mme. de eausant. erything seems to be "orking

according to his plans, but for mentioning the name of *oriot, he finds himself shut

out of the ountess de (estaud/s salon, the meeting place of the cream of society.

restfallen o#er his first faux-pas, he learns from Mme. eausant the secret of P're

*oriot/s life. The old man has ruined himself and has accepted a miserable life in

order that his t"o daughters might be "ealthy. 0nastasie has married a nobleman,

ount de (estaud$ elphine an 0lsatian banker, aron of 2ucingen. *oriot,

"elcomed as long as his fortune had lasted, found himself ostraci3ed by his sons-in-

young student should "in the lo#e of the fair ictorine, "hose father is e4tremely

fortune is her brother 5rederic, autrin for the sum of 677,777 francs "ould manage

to get rid of young Taillefer, thus insuring ictorine/s and (astignac/s fortune.(astignac is indignant, but one feels that he is secretly tempted by the proposal.

his fa#or "hen Mlle. Michonneau, a spy for the police, disco#ers autrin to be an
