Surround Speakers

Front Speakers

The front speakers should beplaced the same distance fromeach other as they are fromthe listening position, withtweeters at about the sameheight from the floor as thelisteners’ ears will be.

The center channel speakershould be placed below thetelevision and no more thantwo feet below the tweeters of the left and right speakers.

The two surround speakersshould be placed slightlybehind the listening positionand, ideally, should face eachother. If that is not possible,

they may be placed on a wallbehind the listening position, facing forward. The surroundspeakers should not call atten-tion to themselves. Experimentwith their placement until youhear a diffuse, ambient soundaccompanying the mainprogram material heard in the front speakers.

The low-frequency materialreproduced by the subwooferis mostly omnidirectional, andthis speaker may be placed ina convenient location in theroom. However, the bestreproduction of bass will beheard when the subwoofer

is placed in a corner along the same wall as the frontspeakers. Experiment withsubwoofer placement bytemporarily placing thesubwoofer in the listeningposition and moving aroundthe room until the bass repro-duction is best. Place thesubwoofer in that location.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The 800,1000, 1400 and 1500 Arraymodels feature spiked feet foroptimum acoustic performance.

However, spikes can damagecertain types of floors, such ashardwood. In such instances, place included metal coasters

between the spiked feet andthe floor.

6.1-CHANNEL SYSTEM

A 6.1-channel system willconsist of a 5.1-channelconfiguration, as shown onpage 4, with the addition of arear center speaker placedmidway between the twosurround speakers, andfurther to the rear than the

surrounds. The rear centerspeaker should not call moreattention to itself than thesurround speakers.

7.1-CHANNEL SYSTEM

Some newer surround soundformats utilize left and rightsurround channels that areused for side fill, in addition to the left and right rear chan-nels found in 5.1 systems.Place the left and rightsurround speakers on the

sides of the room, at or infront of the listening position, facing each other.

1400 ARRAY ASSEMBLY

Due to the weight of the 1400 Array horn module, it is packed separately from the low-frequency enclosure. It is a very simple procedure to install the module, and thenecessary instructions arelisted below. The requiredAllen-tipped screw driver isincluded in the accessorypack.

1. Carefully remove the hornmodule from the packagingand place it face down on asoft surface.

2. Locate the cardboardaccessory sleeve andremove the hardware.

3. The accessory sleeveshould contain:

a. 2 Long 1/4" x 20 Allen-head bolts

b. 1 Short 1/4" x 20 Allen-head bolt

c. 1 Logo plate

d. 1 Rubber hole plug

e. 4 Metal coasters (to protect wood and tilefloors from the spike feet)

4. Carefully unpack the low-frequency enclosure andplace it upright. It would behelpful to position it near itsfinal position in the roomsince it is much easier tomove without the additionalweight of the horn module.

5. Notice the two threadedinserts on the angled face of the top and also the smallL-bracket on the top. Theseare the attachment pointsfor the horn module. Imme-diately adjacent to the L-bracket is a recessed con-nector which will make theelectrical connection for thehorn module.

6. Although the module can be installed by one person, it is easier if a second set of hands are available.

7. Cradle the horn module withthe opening along your fore-arm and, using your freehand, connect the plugcoming from the bottom ofthe horn assembly into thejack on the top of theenclosure.

8. You can now place the hornin position on top of theenclosure. The L-bracket fits in an opening under thehorn assembly. The modulewill sit on top of the enclo-sure by itself, although itshould always be steadieduntil fully mounted.

9. Line up the two mountingholes on the lower lip of thefront of the horn with thosein the enclosure. Partiallyinstall one long bolt andthen the other one. It may be necessary to lift the hornslightly so that the boltsinstall smoothly. Do notforce or cross-thread them.

10. Once both bolts have beenstarted, work them in all ofthe way, but do not tightenthem securely just yet.

11. Install the remaining shortbolt in the hole at thebottom rear of the hornmodule. You can fullytighten this bolt.

12. Now completely tighten thetwo front bolts.

13. Everything should be tightand properly aligned at thistime. If not, loosen, realign, and retighten as required.

14. The final steps are toremove the backing fromthe logo badge and place itin the recess on the lowerhorn lip, and to use therubber hole plug to hide thehole at the bottom rear ofthe horn module. Do notcomplete these steps untilthe system has been turnedon and tested acoustically.Make sure the horn moduleis playing first. Once thelogo badge and rubber plug hole are installed, it is extremely difficult toremove them.

Power On

Plug your subwoofer’s AC cordinto a wall outlet. Do not usethe outlets on the back of thereceiver.

Initially set the SubwooferLevel (Volume) Control ¢ tothe “min” position.

Turn on your sub by pressingthe Power Switch ª on therear panel.

Auto On/Standby

With the Power Switch ªin the “on” position, the PowerIndicator LED £ will remainbacklit in red or green toindicate the On/Standby mode of the subwoofer.

RED = STANDBY (No signaldetected, Amp Off)

GREEN = ON (Signal detected,Amp On)

The subwoofer will auto-matically enter the Standbymode after approximately 10minutes when no signal isdetected from your system. The subwoofer will then powerON instantly when a signal isdetected. During periods ofnormal use, the Power Switchª can be left on. You may turnoff the Power Switch ª forextended periods of non-operation, e.g., when you areaway on vacation.

If the Auto Switch • is in the“on” position, the subwooferwill remain on.

Adjust Level

Turn on your entire audiosystem and start a CD or movie soundtrack at a moderatelevel. Turn up the SubwooferLevel (Volume) Control ¢about halfway. If no soundemanates from the subwoofer, check the AC-line cord andinput cables. Are the con-nectors on the cables makingproper contact? Is the AC

plug connected to a “live”receptacle? Has the PowerSwitch ª been pressed to the “on” position? Once youhave confirmed that the sub-woofer is active, proceed byplaying a CD or movie. Use aselection that has ample bassinformation.

Set the overall volume controlof the preamplifier or stereo to a comfortable level. Adjustthe Subwoofer Level (Volume)Control ¢ until you obtain apleasing blend of bass. Bassresponse should not over-power the room but rathershould be adjusted so there isa harmonious blend across theentire musical range. Manyusers have a tendency to setthe subwoofer volume tooloud, adhering to the belief that a subwoofer is there toproduce lots of bass. This isnot entirely true. A subwooferis there to enhance bass, extending the response of the entire system so the basscan be felt as well as heard. However, overall balance must be maintained or themusic will not sound natural. An experienced listener willset the volume of the sub-woofer so its impact on bassresponse is always there butnever obtrusive.

Crossover Adjustments

NOTE: This control will have no effect if the LP/LFE SelectorSwitch ¶ is set to “LFE.” Ifyou have a Dolby Digital orDTS processor/receiver, theCrossover Frequency is set by the processor/receiver.Consult your owner’s manualto learn how to view or changethis setting.

The Crossover AdjustmentControl ∞ determines thehighest frequency at which thesubwoofer reproduces sounds.

If your main speakers cancomfortably reproduce somelow-frequency sounds, set thiscontrol to a lower frequencysetting, between 50Hz and100Hz. This will concentratethe subwoofer’s efforts on the ultradeep bass soundsrequired by today’s films andmusic. If you are using smallerbookshelf speakers that do not extend to the lower bassfrequencies, set the CrossoverAdjustment Control to a highersetting, between 120Hz and150Hz.

Phase Control

The Phase Switch § deter-mines whether the subwooferspeaker’s pistonlike actionmoves in and out with the mainspeakers (0 )̊ or opposite themain speakers (180 )̊. Properphase adjustment depends on several variables, such assubwoofer placement andlistener position. Adjust thePhase Switch to maximizebass output at the listeningposition.

IMPORTANT: Make sure allequipment is turned off beforemaking any connections.

For speaker connections, usea high-quality speaker wirewith polarity coding. The sideof the wire with a ridge or othercoding is usually consideredpositive (+) polarity.

NOTE: If desired, consult your local JBL dealer aboutspeaker wire and connectionoptions.

The speakers have codedterminals that accept a varietyof wire connectors. The mostcommon connection is shownin Figure 1.

To ensure proper polarity, connect each + terminal onthe back of the amplifier orreceiver to the respective +(red) terminal on each speaker,as shown in Figure 2. Connectthe – (black) terminals in asimilar way. See the owner’sguides that were included with your amplifier, receiverand television to confirmconnection procedures.

IMPORTANT: Do not reversepolarities (i.e., + to – or – to +)when making connections.Doing so will cause poorimaging and diminished bassresponse..

Figure 1

Figure 2

FINALADJUSTMENTSCheck the speakers forplayback, first by setting thesystem volume control to aminimum level, and then byapplying power to your audiosystem. Play a favorite musicor video segment and increasethe system volume control to acomfortable level.

NOTE: You should hearbalanced audio reproductionacross the entire frequencyspectrum. If not, check allwiring connections or consultthe authorized JBL dealer fromwhom you purchased thesystem for more help.

Both the amount of bass youhear and the stereo-imagequality will be affected by anumber of different factors, including the room’s size andshape, the constructionmaterials used to build theroom, the listener’s positionrelative to the speakers, andthe position of the speakers inthe room.

Listen to a variety of musicselections and note the basslevel. If there is too much bass, move the speakers away fromnearby walls. Conversely, if youplace the speakers closer tothe walls, there will be morebass output.

Nearby reflecting surfaces canadversely affect stereo-imagingquality. If this happens, tryangling the speakers slightlyinward toward the listeningposition until the optimumeffect is achieved.

CARE OF YOURSPEAKER SYSTEMEach Project Array enclosurehas a finish that does notrequire any routine main-tenance. When needed, use a soft cloth to remove anyfingerprints or dust from the enclosure or grille.

NOTE: Do not use any cleaningproducts or polishes on thecabinet or grille.

WIRING THE SYSTEM

Separate and strip the ends ofthe speaker wire (not supplied)as shown. Speakers andelectronics terminals havecorresponding (+) and (–)terminals. Most manufacturersof speakers and electronics, including JBL, use red todenote the (+) terminal andblack for the (–) terminal.

The (+) lead of the speakerwire is sometimes noted with

a stripe or other demarcation. It is important to connect bothspeakers identically: (+) on thespeaker to (+) on the amplifierand (–) on the speaker to (–)on the amplifier. Wiring “out ofphase” results in thin sound, weak bass and a poor stereo image.

With the advent of multi-channel surround soundsystems, connecting all of

the speakers in your systemwith the correct polarityremains equally important inorder to preserve the properambience and directionality of the program material.
