Olatz Gastelu-Iturri Arteche no ocupa cualquier puesto. Olatz Gastelu-Iturri Arteche’s position is not just like any other. She is the very first female captain in charge of a Trasmediterránea ferry. She knows very well what this means: “Somehow I feel like a pio-neer. I’m very pleased of having made it to the top and being able to break ground for other women to come.” The daughter of a Merchant Navy captain, this woman from Bilbao has been entrusted for the first time with the City of Malaga vessel that covers the Algeciras-Tangier Med section − “a short but very demanding route”. Passengers do not seem surprised at seeing a female captain – “they take it naturally, nobody has ever said anything”. And her colleagues are even less surprised: “There are many women in other positions. I’m just another one here”.
