RUGBY PAI3OThis course focuses on skills, game play, strategies and tactics, and physical
conditioning as it pertains to the game of rugby. Students will examine the history and culture of the game, develop an understanding of the rules and safety
requirements, as well as develop skills and strategies to apply in game situations. Students will also study the nutritional and mental preparedness relevant to rugby, and undergo fitness training appropriate for the sport. Students will
participate in rugby tournaments as well as receive rugby-specific certifications during this course.

Course Learning GoalsBy the end of this course, you will: demonstrate leadership and team
work skills in a variety of rugby game situations.
demonstrate various movement skills specific to the game of rugby.
demonstrate an ability to assess their personal fitness, and develop strategies to manage physical conditioning, nutrition, and mental health in relation to rugby.
demonstrate measures taken for injury prevention in rugby.
Demonstrate an understanding of the game of rugby, the laws of the game and qualities rugby players need to be successful.
Unit 1 – Ball handlingStudents will develop movement skills in passing, kicking, ball retrieval, running and tackling.Unit 2 – Game PlayStudents will examine rugby positions and develop skills in rucking, mauling, scrums, lineouts, and game re-starts.Unit 3 – Strategies & TacticsStudents will study offensive and defensive philosophies in the game of rugby and develop game plans for different versions of the rugby.Unit 4 – What is Rugby?Students will study the history and culture of rugby. They will examine the laws of the game, the safety aspects and conflict resolution in sports.Unit 5 – Fitness & Physical ConditioningStudents will participate in a fitness program after testing their fitness levels and personal setting goals. They will develop an understanding of difference exercises and training principles suitable for rugby, and monitor their progress throughout the semester.

Additional information about course expectations: For success in this course you should attend class and be on time, maintain neat and organized notes, bring all required equipment, complete all assigned work and activities, and be a productive and cooperative member of the class. If you are absent from class it is YOUR responsibility to ensure you have obtained any missed work. If an illness or injury makes it inappropriate for full participation, you will be assigned and assessed for other organizational duties, such as refereeing, scorekeeping or equipment preparation. Participation is still expected to the best of your ability while being excused. If you suffer an injury during class it must be reported to your teacher immediately. See next page.STUDENTS MUST NOT LEAVE THEIR VALUABLES IN THE CHANGEROOM. Please ensure they kept in lockers or at home. Students are asked to BYOD (bring your own device) to class so that new technologies can be used in learning experiences.

Safety, Equipment & Cost
Due to the practical nature of some components of this course student safety is of extreme importance. During ‘contact’ activities it is essential that students follow the rules and guidelines provided to ensure success and enjoyment. You must have a mouth guard, cleats and appropriate clothing for every lesson. Head gear is strongly encouraged. (Indoor turf cleats or regular running shoes are required for indoor lessons)
Lessons will primarily take place at PDHS during the first half of the semester and during the winter months of this semester class will be moved to Syl Apps Community Centre in downtown Paris. Details regarding transportation between PDHS and Syl Apps Community Centre will be provided prior to lessons being moved there.
To cover the cost of rental and transportation to Syl Apps Community Centre there is a $100 cost with this course, which also includes a training/warm-up rugby jersey. This cost also covers our field trip to Sevens tournaments however an additional charge may apply for transportation to the tournaments.
You may pay for the course in one of two ways: (1) Provide a cheque for $100 (payable to PDHS) to the teacher, or (2) register for the convenient, safe and secure online payments. Train a Teammate: You will be paired with a team mate (forward with a back and vice versa) to work with for this assignment. You will become your team mate’s personal trainer and work with them to enhance their performance on the field, their fitness and nutrition. Complete a Rugby Ready Player Profile.

Coach’s Speech Assignment: Prepare a script and video a speech that a coach could make prior to a championship game or during half time. Present the circumstances the team is facing in the game and its significance. Include the focus for the team/individuals, set goals, address mental preparedness and emphasize their motivation.
Week 10-12
Safety & Ethics Case Study: Read over three case studies (1 ethical, 1 soft tissue injury, 1 concussion) and provide information on how you would handle each situation. For emergency situations perform the appropriate first aid etc. and complete a Rugby Ready Serious Injury Form.
Week 13-16
Strategies & Tactics: Create an offensive and defensive strategy as part of an overall game plan. Outline the set pieces, phase play and player responsibilities involved and how they fit into an overall game plan. Explain how the strategies apply the IRB principles of rugby.

Week 16-18 Rugby GLOW: Lead class through a drill with an aim to work on a specific skill, and then teach a strategy to be used as part of a game plan.
