FROM THE PRESIDENT… Hi friends,"Hope you are having a fantastic July. We have many things rolling out in the months ahead. First, our new website should be up and running by August 4th. Second, our Nominee Announcement Broadcast is August 4th at 2:00PM EST. Finally, we are working with some new companies to help offer you more benefits, discounts, and services!!

I hope you enjoy the new format of PERFORMER. With the growth of the Association, a one-page e-mail was not working. If you’d like to contribute, please let me know.!

As the President of the Association, it is my responsibility to ensure that we are providing programs that our members want. So, I would love if you would take the time to shoot me an email with any suggestions you’d like (program ideas, event ideas, benefits, etc.).!

I really look forward to hearing from each of you about your latest adventures. I am leaving on July 23rd to go on “vacation” to Kansas City, MO, to meet/visit with some IMEA members. I will be stopping at the American Jazz Museum, attending some of our member’s events, and more. I will report about my trip in next month’s issue. !

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the view.!

Notes From A “No” Man!by Michael Stover of MTS Management Group/MTS Records

2013 IMEA Manager of the Year

8IMEAOnline.com

I had started writing some posts and giving advice on my social media pages, about a month ago, as my way of giving some advice regarding some of the things that I see and hear, both at shows, and on artists’ social media pages. It always seemed to be the same things, coming from “artists,” who excel in playing the blame game: making excuses for why they aren’t succeeding. So, I thought that I would try to be helpful, by calling artists out on their behaviors! It may not be popular, or politically correct, but if an artist can’t handle the truth and some constructive criticism, then they are in the completely WRONG business. This industry of show business can be BRUTAL at best, and before you enter into such an endeavor, that can cost you tons of money, time, blood, sweat and tears…you need to make sure

that you can handle some criticism, can take a good hard look in the mirror, and are willing to take accountability for things you may be falling short on. Most of all, you need to be willing to make a change, and implement the advice you are given, no matter how uncomfortable it might make you feel. Believe me, nothing great was ever achieved in someone’s “comfort zone.” This is one of the biggest mistakes that artists can make: surrounding themselves with “yes” people, who will tell them exactly what they want to hear, all the time, just to build the artists’ egos and to be their BFF. Forget that…it’s not going to help you EVER. I AM A “NO” MAN! That being said, I hope that I can offer a frank, honest, unabridged opinion and give helpful, thought-provoking advice, based on my experiences and successes in this wonderful

t-shirts/posters, etc. at the merchandise table. I'll even go one step further, too...if you're hanging out in the dressing room for longer than the time it takes you to get dressed, you're losing money!! Wanna know why? I will tell you all about it during next month’s post.

Until then, I hope that this article will make you think and evaluate your performances. How can you connect with YOUR audience? How can you make them FEEL the words you are singing? How can you get them to talk about you, long after the last chord has been played, or the last note has been sung..or will you just sing your songs and be forgotten by the time they hit the door to leave? The choice is up to you. If you have questions, feel free to contact me via my website at www.mtsmanagementgroup.com. See you next month!

business of ours.

I am very blessed to have been asked to write this, and hopefully, a monthly column for our IMEA newsletter. It’s quite an honor, and as the 2013 IMEA Artist Manager of the Year, a title I wear proudly, I am more than happy to give back to an organization that has been so good to me. Again, I hope that you don’t mistake my passion and honesty for disdain and arrogance. That’s not how I intend these posts to come across. However, I don’t plan on pulling any punches, either, as that has never really helped anyone. So, here we go:

Let’s start by talking about live performances: If you aren't connecting with your audience and making memories at your shows, you may as well be singing in your shower. It's simply not good enough to be a great singer. Do you know how many "GREAT singers" there are? Literally millions. So, that alone will not get you where you want to be. Nor will all the promotion in the world. Hype only takes you so far. It comes down to YOU and YOUR audience. CONNECT, MAKE MEMORIES, BE A FAN and ask yourself, "Would I want to go to my show?" You can create a long lasting memory without big production. You just have to know how to DELIVER a song and make the audience FEEL what you're singing, whether it's 2 people in a coffee shop or 10,000 people in an arena. Connecting with your audience is the SECRET...so don't tell anyone! lol. But, practice it every time you get on stage. If you can sell your performance to the audience, I guarantee you will sell your music/

6 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time for Musicians

By Mereshas originally posted on MusicClout.com"Today is probably the best and most exciting time to be a musician.

There’s a lot of negativity these days about the music industry. Music revenue is down, CD sales are disappearing, people are streaming instead of buying music, etc.

Compared to the past, though, there are at least 7 reasons why these times are better than any other in history for musicians.

1. Fans can find you – With SoundCloud, Spotify, YouTube and other online sites, there are many channels for new fans to find your music. It used to be that almost the only way to be heard was for a record company to sign you and promote your song over the radio.

2. You can communicate with Fans – With the continuing boom in social media, you have unfiltered access to most music buyers in the world. You can find folks in the smallest niches and communicate with them directly. In the past, independent artists didn’t have much access to what was a very limited number of media outlets. 3. You can be the record company – You can decide what music to put out when. If you want to bring back the Acid Bass, as I try to do on a recent song, you can. No longer are to subject to the filter of label executives trying to force you to be the next Ariana Grande or Beyoncé.

4. You can record with world class sound – With a software program, a computer and some limited equipment, you can record world-class music including the most sophisticated compositions. Yourself. In your bathroom. Gone are the days when you always had to have a huge budget for studio time, producers, engineers, managers, etc.

5. You can distribute internationally quickly – There are a range of distributors of music such as Tunecore, which I use, CD Baby and others that will get your music to iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and dozens of other of digital stores within days. Now you don’t have to produce physical products, ship them internationally and worry about returns.

6. You control your destiny – The days when someone like Clive Davis would discover and develop you are gone. Almost all artists today can, and have to, control their own destiny. Even the most famous ones. It means connecting with fans on social media, at concerts, through regular email and a few thousand other things. While challenging, it can be done. If you expect someone to hand you superstardom on a platter, dream on.

If you want to build a sustainable life as an artist, and have a bit of talent, it can be done. No one will say it is easy, but then what is?

Rock on!

What do you think?

Let me know. You can follow my own musical adventure at meresha.com.

3 Reasons Auditioning Is an Art in Itself By Craig Wallace. Originally posted on Backstage.com"!

Auditioning is often seen as the poor uncreative cousin to acting; a necessary evil, the thing you have to learn so that you can get the job and really act.

This losing attitude is just plain wrong.

Auditioning is a dynamic creative process that can shine a light on your soul and test your skills and bravery like few other artistic disciplines can. It is an art form unto itself.

Here are just a few of the many qualities that make it so:

1. Self-knowledge is its cornerstone. A successful film/TV audition answers the question, “Who are you and what do you have to add to the role?” It’s not about acting choices, but what you personally

have to add to the role. It requires a way of working that allows you to go deeply into your own personality and explore your internal landscape. “What are the most interesting and compelling qualities I have to offer this role?” “Which parts of me will bring the words to life in the most unique way?” “What will give the piece the strongest, truest heartbeat?”

Self-exploration is exhilarating and necessary work for the actor and the basis of the art of auditioning. Greatness can be achieved by the knowledge gained through these journeys of self-exploration as you continue to patiently and persistently peel back the layers of the onion and discover the intersection of yourself and the words on the page.

The art of film/TV audition is discovering not how you can act the role, but who you are in the role.

2. It requires its own technique. The art of performance requires a method that allows you to disappear into a character. The art of audition requires a technique that allows you to create and define that character with the unique qualities that are yours and yours alone.

The audition technique you use needs to increase your focus and concentration. It needs to assist you in listening and reacting with more energy and spark than you may normally listen with in your real life. It needs to make the stillness required in a film/TV audition look natural even if it’s an action scene! Your technique needs to help you safely and specifically target the most compelling qualities that you have to bring to the role. And because you are doing all of this preparation by yourself, your technique has to fulfill the role of a wise, gentle, and persistent director. Finally, it needs to allow you to let all of the work go so that you can be present in the room with confidence and ease, and be the actor they want to work with and have to hire.

3. It demands a special brand of courage. Any art form that asks you to stand up in front of people and express yourself requires courage. Auditioning though, tests your courage, not just at the end, but every step of the way. It starts with having the courage to explore your heart and soul and to not stop until you find the truest and rawest parts of yourself to incorporate into the material. It continues in the need for complete trust in yourself and your instincts, as well as the courage to

12IMEAOnline.com

Page 13: Performer - July 14

International Music and Entertainement Association, Inc. July 2014

commit to your decisions having no idea how they will be received—auditioning is a solitary art form.

If you have mastered the art of auditioning, you have instilled the words on the page with your specific life and humanity. Now, you have to stand in the room and let everybody see your life and humanity with no work or character to hide behind and no other actors to save you. Just you.

And then you have to accept the responses to your audition. If you’re performing as an actor or singer, you can always assign some of the reaction to your performance to things outside of yourself: “they didn’t like the play, not their type of music, etc.” But in auditioning it’s once again just you, and if you don’t book the job, the “no” can have a much sharper sting.

Artists are always exposed to some degree when they share their work, but there seems to be always something in most artistic disciplines that leave the artist somewhat protected —partially clothed. A true and honest TV/film audition, however, demands complete exposure and full-frontal emotional nudity.

This is not an art form for the weak or timid; it requires all of the fierce and tender bravery of the true artistic warrior.

Auditioning—especially for the camera—is the art of personal expression. It is about bringing the words to life by instilling them with the most interesting, resonant parts of yourself—illuminating them with what excites and moves you, and then delivering them with a voice that is unique to you.

It is the art of telling the truth, naked, in extreme close-up.

Bill Wren

National Association of Distinguished Professionals Selects Bill Wren as a Professional Member of the Executive and Professionals Online Registry

Fulton, TX –— Bill Wren, Chief Executive Officer of Ponder Dust Publishing, LLC, has been selected as a Professional of the Year Member of the National Association of Distinguished Professionals. The selection recognizes Bill Wren’s commitment to excellence in Arts and Entertainment.

Founded in 2012, Bill Wren serves as CEO of Ponder Dust Publishing, a music publishing company that allows him to use his creative side to not only run the business, but seek out new talent and promote music. He is an award-winning writer who brings years of experience to the small group of four that comprise the business, and his music has been played on Sirius XM and two Ponder Dust projects to date.

Mr. Wren was first introduced to music by his grandparents before he could even walk or talk. Classical music was often played in his house growing up and it didn’t take long for him to want to learn to play some instruments.

“My grandparents took me to a college football game when I was about six- or seven-years-old,” Mr. Wren remembers. “But I was much more interested in the marching band playing than the football game. I wanted to see it up close so I could hear, feel, and experience the music. I believe it was at that point the spirit of music entered into me.”

The founder and previous CEO of a very successful manufacturing company called Hewitt Machine & Tool, Inc. for 23 years, Mr. Wren knows what it takes to run a business. As far as his music was concerned though, he had to rely on his God-given talents and his experience playing in bands all his life to see it through. Over the past two years, Mr. Wren has been working hard to develop Ponder Dust Publishing, and he sees it someday becoming a premier business that can produce and publish some significant new talent. As for the music he writes, it has taken on a life of its own and is doing quite well. Some of his music has been played worldwide on New Age/Smooth Jazz radio, on satellite radio, and on television, including Direct TV, the Dish Network, SoundScape, and on several airlines. He hopes to soon branch out to do music for movies and for more television, as he believes that his music would be a great fit for this genre.

Mr. Wren is a graduate of Texas State College and a member of American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He has been recognized many times for his contributions to the field, including first place for his single, ‘Day Break’, in the Indie International Songwriting Contest, an organization that gives semi-annual recognition to some of the best emerging songwriters in the world. Mr. Wren was also nominated through ZMR for Best New Songwriter of the Year, Best Album of the Year, Best Cover Art, Best Contemporary Album of the Year, and Hollywood Music in Media Awards for the song ‘Between Heaven and Earth’ off of his ‘Journey Around the Sun: A Mayan Odyssey’ CD. He was also a UK Songwriter artist finalist and won the 100% Music Songwriter Award.

Kasha Kasha's New Single ‘I Want You' Top 50 Worldwide National Charts

The emerging singer and songwriter, Kasha has announced to endorse her new release, 'Hero', that is now available at all digital stores. She is gearing up to tour and promote her newly released songs. 'Hero' is another single from the vocalist coming from New York, after the first hit 'I Want You'.

'Hero' has already hit the Top 50 Worldwide National Charts. For six consecutive months, this track remained on top charts. National Airplay Top 200 Charts, National Top 50 Independent Charts and National Airplay Top 50 R&B/Hip Hop Charts are among the most notable ones.

Most interestingly, Kasha prefers to get signed. even after such level of fame. In fact, she signed under her own entertainment company, Kasha Entertainment, LLC. She has a major distribution contract with Fontana Records, INgrooves and Universal Music Group.

Kasha had been singing and performing under the hood for quite some years. However, the Brooklyn-based lady became a celebrity after the release of her single 'I Want You' by selling over 11k copies. The song made up to the National Top 50 Charts in the first week of its release. An interesting fact about this song is that its remix version released two years back before the original version. In addition to that, the official music video of 'I Want You' got more than one million views on YouTube within two months.

Kasha is known to have a background much related to the music, and has recovered from her days of hardship. She almost broke at the age of 14, when her mother who was her inspiration for singing died. But then, she gathered herself and held on to her dream of becoming a singer, under the supervision of elder sister.

In the recent few years, Kasha has gained much fame and acceptance from both, the public and the media. In September 2013, Star Magazine titled her as the Best Unsigned Artist of the Month. She was also featured twice in The Hype Magazine in October last year and January this year. Most recently, she was interviewed by the Hip Rock Magazine.

The hit single 'Hero' is an inspirational song by Kasha. She describes it as an up lifting and positive song giving this happy vibe that brightens your day. The song is available at iTunes and all digital stores. Kasha seems quite confident about this song, as it would strengthen her to carry her music career further.

Stage Republic

"Dutch pop band Stage Republic celebrated a successful album release in Korea earlier this month. That's a big achievement for an independent act. The album is nicely described in the words of Eclectic Pop blog: "A retro chic, rhythm heavy pop treat". The band's current single "All Out" is currently #2 in the official Dutch national Indie Chart and scored so high in a crowd review on ReverbNation that the band was offered a  feature on ReverbNation's homepage in September.

Meanwhile the band has started its promotion campaign in the United States targeting non-commercial and US College Radio stations. In the first week, already 21 stations across the country made the album available for airplay or reported consistent rotation including KURA in Ouray, KEUL in Girdwood, CO, WXOU in Rochester, MI, KXJZ in Sacramento, CA, KRSC in Claremore, OK, WNCW in Spindale, NC, WRTC in Hartford, CT, WXJM in Harrisonburg, VA, WCYT in Fort Wayne, IN, and many others. The music is really received very well. We expect to see more stations catch on with the following weeks so stay tuned and keep checking http"//stagerepublic.com."
