William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest poet and playwright in the English language. His plays, written over 400 years ago, are still performed each year, worldwide, to an appreciative audience of millions.

Join us for an immersive two-week practical workshop exploring the demands of performing Shakespeare’s work. Through specialist movement, voice, singing and acting classes you will build vital skills and understanding, gaining more confidence in and awareness of your own approach to performing these classic plays.

our course is taught by a team of highly qualified and experienced teacher/prac t i t ioners, who have worked nationally and internationally in theatre, fi lm, television and radio, including ex-RSC actors.

This intensive practical exploration, is designed for students of Acting and Theatre Arts at university level who already have some solid grounding in fundamental acting skills or for practicing professionals who want to brush up their skills in performing classical texts.

The two weeks of workshops and scene study lead to a simply staged performance of scenes for an invited audience of fellow Summer School students and staff .

Workshops and classes take place in our specialist performance studios at the University College’s Wallisdown campus and in downtown Bournemouth.

There will be opportunities to visit The Globe Theatre in London or the Royal Shakespeare Company, the birthplace of William Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Introduction to Male and Female Tailoring MethodsEngland has always been known as the birthplace of tailoring, with its roots in16th century London. It has been enhanced in more recent times by such places as Savile Row that has become the home of classic English tailoring.

You will be introduced to English male and female tailoring methods and learn the history of tailoring, from the late 18th century to the present day.

Through practical demonstrations you will be taken through the various introductory stages of traditional bespoke tailoring through the making of a male waistcoast and the process of ‘soft’ tailoring through a female jacket.

You will be able to explore the traditional techniques of using a tailor’s square to draft patterns, as well as all the techniques used in the cutting and making processes of traditional bespoke tailoring for men.

You will be introduced to the various techniques used in the cut, construction and the fit of a female tailored jacket that will prepare you for future exploration of female tailoring of different periods.

The course will look at different fashion periods through the 20th century where female tailoring has been dominant and you will work on one jacket to a fitting stage that will give you an introduction to some of the methods used in couture female tailoring.

This course is designed for those with a good level of garment construction.

18th Century Male Coats

An introductory course for students interested in male period clothing, who wish to learn specialist skills and methods. The course off ers an opportunity to look in-depth at male coats of the 18th Century. It will start with a basic understanding of the history of male dress from the late 16th Century to the 18th Century, exploring the developments of male dress and the beginning of tailoring.

We will look at the advance of tailoring methods through the 18th Century and the changes in style, cut and construction. Through practical demonstrations you will be taken through the various stages of drafting, cutting and making a part coat.

You will be able to explore both the traditional and modern techniques of construction and how to deal with the pleated skirts and the diffi culty of fi tting a coat with so few seams.

19th Century Tailormade Steampunk FrockcoatsThe 19th century was a period of experimentation for tailors as they attempted to make a science of the sartorial arts. Consequently, male fashion saw a number of signifi cant changes that very often-refl ected changes in society and the way people lived.

The course is ideal for anyone wishing to learn about male period costume and if you are in to Steampunk this is a great opportunity to add to your Steampunk wardrobe.

It off ers an opportunity to do some advanced tailoring work through the cut and construction of a part 19th century Male Frockcoat.

You will learn about the developments in male tailoring during the 19th century and put English bespoke tailoring techniques in to practice through the making of a Victorian frockcoat.

You will be able to explore the specialist traditional techniques of using a tailor’s square to draft patterns, as well as all the traditional methods used in the cutting and making processes of English bespoke tailoring.

The course is designed for anyone with a good knowledge in garment making, intermediate - advanced hand and machine sewing skills and anyone who wishes to advance their skills in understanding male period costume.

Introduction to Make-upTaught in our state-of-the-art make-up studio by skilled members of our BA (Hons) Make-Up for Media and Performance team, this course will give you the opportunity to work in a realistic, professional and comfortable working environment.

Spread over 3 weeks you will be given a good introduction to the world of the make up artist, and develop a portfolio of work to build on for further studies or professional work.

Special Effects and ProstheticsWEEK 2

You will develop your practical understanding of special effects make-up for film, television and live performance. You will be introduced to the work of award winning special effects make-up artists and the evolution of prosthetic work. You will also develop your knowledge in using a variety of make-up and prosthetic materials to create practical make-ups for casualty simulation, fantasy work and science fiction characters. You will also learn about casting and mould making processes required for prosthetic make-up.

Historical Make-up and Hair work for film, television and stageWEEK 3

Through a series of practical workshops you will develop technical skill in period make up, hair work and wig work. You will be introduced to research skills for developing informed and accurate characters within historical contexts and create a variety of historical make-up transformations. This course will develop your practical understanding of the role of the make up artist when working on a period production for film, television or live performance.

Fashion, Editorial and RunwayWEEK 1

Through a series of workshops you will develop design skills and gain technical skills in creating contemporary make-up and hair work. You will also have the opportunity to record your final looks through a series of photographic shoots. If you are interested in the contemporary world of make-up artistry then this course is for you. You will be introduced to the innovating work of prominent make-up artists in this creative field.

A more advanced course for students with some experience of garment construction. This is an ideal course for students who have an interest in female couture clothing and want the opportunity to understand and learn some very specialist cutting and making skills as well as working methods.

The late 1940’s saw the re-birth of fashion after the period of austerity caused by the Second World War. The ‘New Look’ was controversial because it directly confronted this austerity and was seen by many as an affront to the economic sacrifices being met by most Europeans as nations attempted to rebuild.

This course offers an introduction to the complexities of cut, construction and the fit of garments from this dynamic period of female couture fashion.

You will take one garment and construct this to the fitting stage looking at cut, construction and the exploration of couture tailoring methods.

You will look at some of the stunning garments from the leading designers of the time such us Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Schiaparelli and Hubert de Givenchy.

Introduction to CostumeJoining our 3-week summer programme will give you access to world class collections and costume designers working in theatre and cinema production. You will have the opportunity to visit specialist collections not available to the general public, and meet conservationists who will show you rare and precious historical costumes.

Through tutorials, demonstrations and visits you will learn all about British costume from the17th to 20th century. You will examine authentic garments, learn the terminology used by costume designers and develop your drawing skills.

Lectures on the history of costume will help shape your knowledge. You will work with costume lecturers who will demonstrate pattern cutting and sewing techniques. Specialist sessions will allow you to explore the evolution of clothing and how fashion and costume catered to the social and emotional needs of the wearers.

A visit to the Roman city of Bath will allow you to immerse yourself in 18th century Georgian art, architecture and costume. A visit to the Bath Costume Museum will allow you to see some of the very best preserved examples of corsets and understructures and male and female period clothing.

A trip to London, famous for its royal palaces, art galleries and museums will oer the opportunity to see professional theatre costume at a leading costume hire house, and visit the Victoria & Albert Museum to see displays of period costume, jewellery and textiles.

Introduction to Cutting 18th & 19th Century Female DressThe 18th and 19th century saw female dress go through many changes in shape. From panniers and sack backs of the 18th century to high waists and see-through dresses or large skirts held out by wide steel cages.

The course offers you an introduction to 18th & 19th century female period dress. You will look at the various changes in style, cut and construction through the different periods and how dress and clothing accessories contributed to the changing shape of the female body.

Through practical demonstrations you will then be taken through the various stages of cutting toile’s of a range of female bodices and skirts on the stand and making them ready for a fitting. You will be able to explore both original and modern techniques in drafting a pattern, using and working with appropriate fabric and using specialist techniques to achieve the correct fit and period look.

Specialist Costume Design and ConstructionThe course will develop your conceptual thinking and creativity. You will develop specialist techniques in design, construction or supervision along with fabric selection, dyeing and manipulation in accordance with the project brief.

The course allows you to explore and develop creativity, problem solving skills and autonomous learning whilst further consolidating your professional development planning.

You will consider emerging issues and perceptions of traditional and historical contexts, and potential developments in the framework of post modern performance.

You will undertake a sustained piece of academic writing that will develop your critical argument.

The intention of this course is to provide the opportunity to develop conceptual approaches and critical problem-solving skills through the exploration of a large dramatic text.

Costume Design and Construction

This course will introduce you to the fundamental theories, techniques and processes relevant to Costume with Performance Design. You will look at the context of costume within the fi lm, television and theatre industries and will develop creative and technical approaches to costume design and interpretation.

You will explore a given dramatic text, analyse the script, explore the communication of character and consider theatre spaces. You will investigate a dramatic production that challenges contemporary, historical and cultural forms, through the integration of theory and research with practical studies.

You will have the opportunity to realise a costume design from 2D to 3D and apply your skills and techniques of costume construction to produce a costume. You will develop your creative and aesthetic understanding through the visual realisation of your design.

BA (Hons) Costume with

Performance DesignThis course addresses design and manufacture for the performance industry with specific focus on developing a conceptual understanding of performance design. This is a diverse and demanding subject; students need to be interested in art, design and all types of performance to support the study of the dazzling array of genres they will encounter on this course, including theatre, fi lm, television, ballet, opera, circus and the study of new performance disciplines.

MA CostumeThe Costume course supports and develops advanced practitioners who have ambition to explore, challenge and redefine the roles and relationships between costume and ‘audience’.

The MA student will, through research, scholarship, conceptual enquiry and the making of work, strive toward innovative solutions to complex and individual creative proposals which are the central focus for their personal and artistic development. Research specialisms include live art practice as well as academic, theoretical and critical emphases.
