Rules and Play

Contents - 26 Challenge cards- 99 Element cards- Instruction page

OBJECTIVEPlayers trade element cards to achieve compound challenges. The player that finishes the game with the most challenge points wins.

SETUP1. Deal seven (7) element cards and one (1) Challenge card to each player. Players can look at all cards in

their hand.2. Place the remaining Challenge cards and remaining element cards face down in the middle of the table.3. When all players are ready, the dealer will start the game.

PLAY1. Once the game has started, players will attempt to complete each challenge by collecting the element

cards that each challenge requires. (Example: Ammonia is NH3 . The card shows Nitrogen and 3x Hydrogen. Player must collect one (1) Nitrogen element card and three (3) Hydrogen cards to complete this challenge.)

2. Players will not have every element that each challenge requires. To acquire different elements, players trade with other players. Trades can be 1-4 cards and cards can only be traded with someone trading the same amount.

3. To trade with another player, simply shout out the number of cards you are wishing to trade. Trade with someone who is shouting out the same amount. Players don’t show each other the cards during the trade. If someone is wanting to trade a lower amount of cards than you do, you are allowed to change your number so the trade can be made. Each card in a trade does NOT need to be the same element.

4. Wild cards may be played in place of any element.5. When a Bomb card is drawn by a player, he/she places the card on the table. All other players must

draw another Challenge card.6. When players gather every element that a Challenge card requires, they place those element cards with

that Challenge card, face down in front of them and then draw enough element cards to replenish their hand. (Players should always have seven (7) element cards in their hand until the last card is drawn.)

7. Challenge cards with higher point values may be more difficult to complete, therefore players are not required to draw additional Challenge cards apart from the one (1) they begin with. Players receive more points for every challenge they complete and are penalized for every incomplete challenge they have at the end of the game. To continue trading and increase points, it is recommended to draw additional Challenge cards when a challenge is completed. Additional Challenge cards may be drawn at any time during the round.

8. When no element cards remain in the draw pile, the round is over. (Optional play: following the final element card drawn, players have a time limit to complete challenges before the round ends.)

9. After the third round, play is complete.

SCORINGAt the end of each round, individual players will tally up the number of points on their completed Challenge cards and subtract the points for each Challenge they did not complete. This will be their score for the round. Each player will total their rounds for a final score. The player with the highest total score after three (3) rounds is the winner!

INCREASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CLASSROOMWhen all play has ended, ask players questions such as:

“Who has a Challenge card that relates to health and/or medicine?” “Who has a Challenge card with a molar mass higher than 100?” “Which element did you collect the most of to complete your challenges?”

Award extra points for the above challenges.
