Physical Properties of Elements

1) atomic radius

2) charge and size of the most stable ion

3) first ionization energy

4) second and successive ionization energy

5) electron affinity

6) electronegativity

Graphing

• Determine the trend you will be plotting.

• Plot the data on the graph paper provided with atomic number on the x-axis.

• Label and title you plot. Identify each period of elements in a different color

Summary

• Examine your plot and determine the periodic trend. • Prepare a short paragraph that describes the property

you plotted.• Prepare a second paragraph that describes in detail the

periodic trend you discovered. How does the property change for elements in the same period. How does the property change for elements in the same group? Possible patterns may include– Increasing with atomic number– Decreasing with atomic number– Describe a more complex pattern

• Explain the trends in your property in terms of physical principles such as “electron shielding”, “increasing or decreasing distance from the nucleus” or other effects.

Grading

• Your graph should be completed the day it is assigned.

• Make sure your graph has an appropriate title and is labeled on both axes (including units). Choose a linear scale so that your data fills up most of the graph paper. Be sure to plot the data accurately.

• Type the two-three paragraphs, and staple to your final graph. Due Wednesday November 16.
