sterility and integrity

As an uns cr ubbed person, open wrapped s upplies by openingthe wrapper flap farthest a way from the body first and the wrapper flap nearest to the body last

Se cure wrapper edges when delivering items to the sterile field.

Deliver sterile items to the s cr ub person, or pla ce them se curely on the sterile field.

Deliver sharps, heavy obje cts, and rigid container systems dire ctly to the s cr ub person, or open on a separate s urfa ce.



O pen, dispose, and transfer all items onto a sterile field by methods that maintains sterility and integrity

When delivering sol utions to the sterile field, have the s cr ub person hold the sol ution re cepta cle, or pla ce it near the table edge.

Po ur sol utions slo wly to avoid splashing. The edge of a sol ution container is contaminated, therefore

dis card remaining sol utions in the container. Immediately before presentation to the sterile field, inspe ct all items for proper pa cking, pro cessing, seal, pa ckage integrity, the in cl usion of a sterilization indi cator, and expiration date, if indi cated





C onstantly maintain and monitor the sterile field

Pre pare the sterile field as close as possible to the time of use.

Prevent the s pread of moist ure dro plets by limiting conversation in the presen ce of a sterile field

Use non-perforating devi ces to se cure equi pment to the sterile field





M ove within or around the sterile field in a manner that maintains sterility of the field

PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE FOR

WEARING OPERATIVE ATTIRE

W ear facility-approved operative attire when enteringthe semi-restricted and restricted areas of the

operative and invasive procedure suite

W ear approved , clean , and freshly laundered operative attire.

After daily use or when operative attire becomes soiled , wet with blood , body fluid , sweat , place reusable attire in designated post-use container.

Secure the top of pantsuit at the waist by tuc king into pants or securing it to fit closely to the body.





C over head and facial hair, including neckline,when in semi restricted and restricted areas of the operative and invasive procedure

suite.

Before donning operative attire, cover all hair with facilit y-approved capor bouffant hat that covers the side hair including the ears and hair at the nape of

the neck. Discard used hair covers in an appropriate

container.





W hen in restricted areas, wear a mask in the presence of the sterile items, equipment, or scrubbed personnel.

W hen wearing a mask, cover both the mouth and nose and secure it in a manner that prevents venting.

Avoid contamination of the hands b y removing and

discarding a mask, handling onl y the ties. Do not let a mask hang from the neck.

Do not tuck a mask into a pocket for future use.





C onfine or remove all jewelry and watches when entering the semi-restricted and restricted areas of the operative and invasive procedure suites.

Remove rings and bracelets.

C onfine or remove watches. C onfine or remove earrings.





K eep fingernails short, clean, and healthy.

Tri m fingernails short and al ways keep it in good condition.

Do not wear polish.

Do not wear artificial nails.





W ear protective barriers to reduce the risk of exposure to potentially infective materials

W ear sterile gloves when performing sterile procedures.

W ear clean gloves especially when exposure to blood and body fluid is likely.

Change gloves before each patient contact.

W ear protective eye wear , masks or face shield during any activity to prevent from potential splashing or spraying.

W ear additional protective attire such as liquid-

resistance aprons , go wns and shoe covers particularly when anticipating exposure to blood , body fluids , and/or sources of contamination.

W ear shoes that provide protection from sharps and fluids.
