Introducing Perlac® 850/855Perlac® 850/855 is a spray-dried permeate powder with a high content of lactose. Made from sweet whey, it is processed to the highest standards for food-grade ingredients.

The ideal lactose source for young animalsPerlac® 850/855 is the ideal lactose source in premium feed for most young animals. In addition to increasing feed intake, our Perlac® 850/855 stimulates absorption of calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

How do we create permeate? The main nutrients in cows’ milk are lactose, fat, milk protein (casein), whey protein, and minerals. When producing cheese, it is mainly the fat and casein which are utilized. The liquid which remains is called Whey.

Filtration techniques are employed to separate the whey into Permeate and Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC). The permeate contains lactose, minerals, and trace quantities of whey proteins.

Using modern drying techniques, it is possible to dry the liquid permeate into a free-flowing high quality permeate powder.

The following diagram is a simplified illustration of the permeate production process.

Why choose Perlac® 850/855? Compared to lactose powder, Perlac® 850/855 still contains valuable milk minerals. When included in feed formulations, it provides a source of highly bio-available phosphorous and calcium. The below graph shows a digestibility comparison between Perlac® 850/855 and other phosphorous sources.

Advantages of Perlac® 850/855As well as being a source of bio-available phosphorous and calcium, Perlac® 850/855 also provides additional advantages when compared to lactose and whey pow-der alternatives:

Lactose in piglet diets Weaning piglets from 18 to 22 days old present a nutritional challenge. The ability of piglets to intake feed is the main restricting factor in utilizing the young pigs’ genetic growth potential. A look at the content of sow milk shows nature’s formulation:

Sow milk day 21 post partum

DM 18-19% Protein 28% Fat 35% Lactose 30% Minerals/vitamins 7%

Dry feed must firstly be recognized as nourishment. Secondly, the composition of the feed should match the digestive capacity of the pig at this specific time.

Young piglets have a very high capacity to digest lactose. Research proves that including lactose in simple feed diets is very beneficial.

Diet trials using Perlac® 850/855 Documented effects of lactose sourceThe effect of lactose source was investigated in a 2010 study carried out by the INTA in Argentina. 420 piglets were fed using either sweet whey powder, maltodex-trine or Perlac® 850/855. The piglets were weaned at 21 days.

The results, illustrated below, show that piglets fed on maltodextrine performed lower than those fed on sweet whey powder or Perlac® 850/855.

Substitution of whey powder with permeate and lactose In a separate study, researchers at Kansas State Univer-sity compared a substitution of whey powder with per-meate and lactose in piglet diets during the first 14 days after weaning.

A daily gain

ADFI

The results, illustrated below, show that edible grade whey permeate and crystaline lactose can replace the lactose provided by high quality dried whey, without affecting pig growth performance.

Feed to gain

Another study by Embrapa, Brazil concludes:

” Although animals that received diets without growth promoters showed more negative weight gains in the first week after weaning, there were no differences in performance among treatments. Therefore, keeping characteristics of lactose sources used in this study, all of them are similar and they should be chosen by price”

Formulating diets using Perlac® 850/855 Ensuring optimal growth and cost efficiency Diet formulations for piglets are among the most expen-sive overheads in swine rearing. Piglets have very high nutritional requirements for growth, as well as an under-developed digestive system and a developing immune system. The selection of feed formulation for the first 4 to 5 weeks of rearing is essential to ensure optimal growth and cost efficiency. Perlac® 850/855 offers you the op-portunity to secure both of these critical aspects.

Full flexibility in protein sourceBy selecting Perlac® 850/855 as your premium lactose source in piglet diets, you gain the full flexibility in choice of protein source, whilst mantaining a beneficial level of lactose.
