Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. To make perlite insulation, perlite ore is crushed and segregated. Then it is heated to a point in its softening range where its volume expands some 4 to 25 times due to the 2 - 6 % combined water in the ore. When rapidly heated to above 870°C (1600T), the ore pops as this water vapourizes, creating countless partial vacuum air pockets in the heat softened glassy particles which makes expanded perlite lightweight and an excellent insulator.

Expanded perlite can be manufactured to weigh as little as 32 kg/m 3 (2 Ib/ft 3), making it t he ideal insulation for cryogenic tanks and coldboxes. In construction applications, perlite aggregates for plaster and lightweight insulating concrete have density ranges from 96 -192 kg/m 3 (6 - 12 Ib/ft 3), in compliance with ASTM Standards. A form of natural glass, perlite is chemically inert, with a pH of about 7. Highly resistant to heat and flame, expanded perlite is used world -wide as an efficient insulator and fire-proofing aid.

Perlite insulation sectionals in the form of pipe covers and boards, consist of

expanded perlite powder bound together by an inorganic binder (sodium silicate) and reinforci ng fibre. Completely non -flammable. They are widely used as insulation for heated equipment, vessel and piping. The major advantages that perlite insulation sectionals have over the 2 main competitors, calcium silicate and rockwool are:-

C o r r o s i o n r e s i s t a n c e

Perlite insulation sectionals have a high sodium silicate-to-chloride ratio. Sodium silicate is a corrosion -inhibitor which limits the corrosive effects of soluble Chlorides. The water-repellent nature of perlite prevents the entry of soluble Chlorides into the system. Thus it helps avoid unnecessary shutdowns and loss of production hours at refineries, petrochemical and power plants caused by corrosion of piping, fittings and vessels.

W a t e r r e p e l l e n c y

The extremely water - repellent nature of perlit e insulation sectionals means that they retain their low thermal conductivity factor even when there is water ingress into the system. Calcium silicate and rockwool on the other hand have very high water absorption factors resulting in a loss of their insu lation properties and an increase in the operational cost of the plant.

A c i d / A l k a l i R s i s t a n t Because of its very low acid and alkaliabsorption factors, perlite does not deteriorate when in contact with either of these corrosive substances

THE MANY ADVANTAGES PERLITE

SECTIONALS OFFER

Corrosion-resistant. Perlite maintains the integrity of piping and vessels overthe years, greatly reducing the unnecessary shutdowns and loss of production hours due to corrosion.

Repels Water. Perlite maintains a low thermal conductivity factor because it stays dry even if the cladding is damaged.

Low Thermal Conductivity Factor. The thermal conductivity of some insulation materials appear to be lower at ambient temperature, but this difference disappears at higher temperatures. Furthermore, ca lcium silicate and rockwool are hard to k eep dry, with water and moisture dramatically increasing their thermal conductivity factors.

Asbestos-free. Perlite does not contain any harmful asbestos.

Non-combustible. Perlite cannot burn. Hence it protects piping and equipment from damage during fires.

Acid / alkali –resistant. Perlite has very low acid and alkali-absorption factors. It does not deteriorate when in contact with either of these corrosive substances

Stable up to 650 °C Perlite domonstrates high resistance to thermal stress, enabling it to remain stable when used at temperatures of up to 650 °C.

Lightweight Perlite is lightweight for easy handling and indicates a good degree of toughness and wear resistance.

All – weather Perlite is water-repellent and can be easily installed in rainy or sunny weather.

Takes Foot Traffic Perlite does not deform, shatter or break when it is rod on, which means it is durable.
