St Joseph’s is a State Integrated Catholic full primary school of 133 children in years 1-8. We are situated centrally in the town of Oamaru in North Otago. We are the only Catholic primary school in North Otago and most of our students follow through to St Kevin’s. At the last count we have 16 different cultures in our school with strong Tongan, Filipino and Chinese cohorts and we celebrate our multicultural composition in many different ways during our year. Our school was established by the Dominican Order and we retain their motto, “Veritas” which means truth. Our vision is “Reach for the Stars as Lifelong Learners in the Catholic Faith.” We have a team-based culture where we gather the expertise of all of our staff to enable our tamariki to grow, each according to their own pathway and to their full potential. We teach a localised inquiry curriculum and have a reputation for excellence in the performing arts and sport. We are looking for a: Committed Catholic who will be a role model for children and community, A child-centred teacher who creates positive environments for learning, Someone who can collaborate in a team and fully engages in the school culture and community, Commitment and knowledge of Restorative Justice (Incredible Years training is not necessary but would be well regarded), Someone with a good knowledge of the New Zealand curriculum and how to integrate curriculum learning. A willingness and ability to participate in religious instruction appropriate to the special character of the school is a condition of appointment. You will be welcomed into a close-knit, multicultural community and an active parish and you will be offered professional development to help to meet our school goals and to develop your professional practice. In the next year or two we will be undergoing a substantial rebuild with new classrooms and teaching preparation spaces and we are looking forward to the opportunities this will provide for professional growth for our team. POSITION DESCRIPTIONJob Description For Scale A Teacher

The job of the class teacher is primarily to teach children within the school and to carry out such associatedduties as are reasonably assigned by the Principal. These duties include responsibility for CurriculumDelivery, Curriculum Content, the Assessment of Pupil Progress, and Reporting to Parents. They are topromote St Joseph’s school vision: ‘To reach for the Stars as Lifelong Learners in the Catholic Faith’ asspecified in the St Joseph’s School Curriculum.

GoalThe class teacher will demonstrate a commitment towards implementing the school charter, vision andCatholic philosophy of the school, ensuring children are working towards the stated outcomes. They willadhere to all policies and procedures for St. Joseph’s School.Special Catholic CharacterThe classroom teacher will promote and nurture the growth of the whole school through prayer, liturgy, faithbased celebration and through teaching the RE curriculum appropriate to the Catholic Special Character ofthe school. They will follow the Code of Ethics for all New Zealand Catholic Schools . They will attend staffprayers and liturgies and be a role model for school families through attending family masses.AccountabilityAll teachers are accountable to the Principal, who in turn is accountable to the Board of Trustees for theperformance of all staff. All teachers will commit to supporting the Staff Code of Conduct.Teaching and Learning

● Ensure a high standard of effective teaching, engagement and management of whole classes,groups and individuals so that learning outcomes are met and challenges are maintained

● Use teaching methods which will engage students and stimulate pupils’ intellectual curiosityincluding the use of effective questioning, clear presentation and good use of resources

● Set high expectations for pupils’ behaviour through well focused teaching and develop positive andproductive relationships for positive behaviour promotion and practice restorative justice.

● Have good knowledge of the NZ National Curriculum.Planning Expectations

● Identify clear learning outcomes appropriate to the educational needs of the pupils in his/her class● Identify students who may require learning support and know where to get help in order to give

positive and targeted support. Implement with SENCO & senior teacher Individual Education Plans(IEPs) and keep records to show progress. The class teacher is responsible for the planning,assessment and progress monitoring of all children in the class including those with extra learningneeds and those requiring extension.

● Record and monitor plans for children identified with special abilities● Update strategies tried and results for monitored students termly.

Assessment and Evaluation● Assess pupil’s achievement and progress in accordance with the school’s assessment plan and use

this assessment for data analysis and future teaching and learning● Monitor and provide constructive oral and written feedback to pupils’ work, setting targets and goals

to develop and extend further learning.● Record assessment data in the SMS as per the school assessment plan.● Include and promote children as initiators and monitors of their learning progress.

Relations with Parents and the wider community● Prepare and present informative, plain language reporting to parents in a professional manner as

per school format● Treat parents with respect at all times and go through the proper channels with all interactions with

parents● Be willing to give a presentation to parents i.e. Curriculum Evenings, Meet the Teachers.. at the

request of the principalManaging own Performance and Development

● Keep up to date with research in pedagogy and participate in, support and put into practice schoolwide professional development

● Set a good example to pupils through personal presentation and conduct● Inquire and reflect into teaching practices in relation to NZ Practising Teacher’s Criteria (PTC) and

be open to continually self reflecting and improving effectivenessManaging and Developing Teaching and Administrative Staff within the School

● Interact on a professional level with colleagues and seek to establish and maintain productiverelationships with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning in the school

● Contribute to and attend staff and team meetings and discussions● Be willing to supervise and guide the work of classroom assistants/teacher aides

Managing Resources● Select and make good use of teaching and learning resources including ICT resources.● The learning intention determines the resource and be flexible in choosing resources knowing there

may be more than one means of reaching the learning intention.● Ensure that an order number is used to purchase any resources

EDUCATION WITH A SPECIAL CHARACTER: The appointee shall support and uphold the school’s “special character” asdefined in the school’s integration agreement and meet the expectations outlined in schedule two of the letter ofappointment and appendix 4.2 of the Handbook for Boards of Trustees, Principals and Staff of New ZealandCatholic Integrated Schools.
