2018 Blood Drive breaks record

Wise Health Decisions

How Can You Help During the Holidays?

September/October 2018 / Volume 2 / Issue 7

The PK U.S.A. Blood Drive far exceeded the goal the American Red Cross set for PK. Coordinated by Patrick Addis, PK U.S.A. intern, the blood drive had 74 employees sign-up to donate. “Out of those 74 donors, 66 pints of blood were collected! This not only exceeded the expectation of 60 usable pints to be collected, but collectively has the potential to save 198 lives,” remarked Patrick.

Blood drives are crucial to the American Red Cross, and to hospitals across Indiana. Shortages in blood are not uncommon, no matter the time of the year. “Your donation and time is always greatly appreciated by the American Red Cross and by PK U.S.A. Look for another donation opportunity in 2019.”

Exceeding Our Goal ..... and saving 198 Lives!

Did you know that over 20 chronic diseases are due, at least in large part, to your choices and behaviors? While your family history, age, gender and race may contribute some to your risk for certain diseases, such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers, what you choose to do or not do can decrease your risks and prevent you from developing a chronic disease. If you already have a chronic disease, what you choose to do or not do can help you control the disease, prevent complications, and the need for more medication.

Because of your participation in Wise Health Decisions® at your PK worksite, and because you try all or some of the behaviors recommended by the RNs about your choices to become or stay healthy, you and the associates you work with are healthier. For example, at PK Shelbyville, more than 95% participate in the clinics with the RNs; at PK Tennessee and PK Mississippi, almost 100% participate. Congratulations!

Are you becoming healthier or staying healthy?

Let’s look at the facts:

• At PK Shelbyville, employees’ overall risk levels for developing a chronic disease improved by 7% between 2016 and 2017 with the largest improvements in total cholesterol levels, and some improvements in weight!

• At PK Tennessee, there was an increase in number of employees in the ‘normal’ risk categories for cholesterol and weight. Decreased number of employees with high risks.

• At PK Mississippi, there were improvements especially in blood pressures.

Congratulations to all of you who are trying to change your habits to healthier behaviors!

If you want to understand more about your risk levels and what factors might be contributing to higher than normal risk levels because of what you eat, your activity level, stress and not getting enough sleep. Ask your RN to help you understand your readings and what you can do to make small changes for improved health.

Below are the clinic times for your worksite. If you need to make an appointment or change an appointment, call 812-378-0615. Remember to call within 15 calendar days if you miss your appointment.
