Integrated Service helps solve 5 year problem with radioactive waste

Five years of difficulties for a company dealing with its Low Level Radioactive Waste were solved by a comprehensive project management plan devised and implemented by Augean Radioactive Waste Services (RWS).

The integrated service, delivered through Augean’s RWS team in partnership with the customer and third party specialists, included the development and implementation of a sampling and analysis plan, characterising the waste both chemically and radiologically, to fully understand its radiological and hazardous properties. This was followed by an evaluation of results, assessment, identification and sourcing of waste treatment via third party service providers. This resulted in the consignment being sent for final disposal via secure burial at Augean’s ENRMF site.

The composition of waste was analysed at each stage from source through to treatment and final disposal, allowing for risk assessments, reporting and compliance testing to be carried out for pre-treated and processed waste.

Joseph Hunter, Key Account Manager – Radioactives, said: “We were able to combine our assets and modern treatment technologies to establish an efficient, effective and fully compliant route for the client’s radioactive waste.

Of particular benefit was the full radiological and chemical characterisation. This had not previously been carried out and was a key factor in developing a solution for an otherwise problematic waste.”

The company now has a secure and cost effective waste disposal route through Augean, for their Low Level Radioactive Waste.
