Continuing Christian Formation After Baptism

Parents and Godparents, remember these words from the baptism of your children/godchildren: Priest (to parents): N and N, you have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you are accepting the responsibility of training N in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring N up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? Parents: We do. Priest (to Godparents): Godparents, N and N, are you ready to help the parents of this child in their duty as Christian parents? Godparents: We are.¹ These are the promises which you, the parents and godparents, made at the baptism of a child. These are promises made to God which are imperative to keep. But it is not only a promise made to God but also a commitment as “the domestic church.” Parents, you are the first catechists of your children. Through your example they learn about living the Christian Catholic faith. You are called as a family to “exercise the priesthood of the baptized in a privileged way ‘by the reception of the sacraments, prayer and thanksgiving, the witness of a holy life, and self-denial and active charity.’ Thus the home is the first school of Christian life and ‘a school for human enrichment.” ² Your children can learn so much from you. They can learn to love God and to love their neighbor through your example. But why do I mention “the domestic church” and why do I mention the “priesthood of the

baptized?” Again parents, you can enrich your child’s continued Christian faith by making sure the child is continuing his or her Christian formation in CCD classes. Yes parents, it helps that you bring the child to the CCD classes but we also NEED YOUR HELP in the instruction of your children. Please practice the prayers with your children, ask them what they learned in class, and try to answer their questions about what they have learned. There are several resources such as the CCD teachers, myself or any of the other priests or several books and articles which can give y help you to answer your children’s questions.

Parents, please continue to live out the baptismal promises and learn or refresh your instruction with your children so that you can create or “become believers ‘together with all [their] household.’”³ Please help your child understand Jesus is the Bread of Life who can satisfy their hunger, who can give them peace, who is always present in their lives. Be that living example by registering them for CCD classes! Be not Afraid EDGE Middle School Retreat – A retreat based in finding true happiness. It will take place Friday, Sept. 7th from 6pm to 9pm and Saturday, Sept. 8th 9am to 8pm. Be not afraid is open to 6th, 7th, & 8th grade Middle School youth. The retreat fee is $50 and includes a T-Shirt and discount for siblings. Formación cristiana continua después del Bautismo Padres y padrinos, recuerden estas palabras del Bautismo de sus hijos/ahijados: Sacerdote (para padres): N y N, ha pedido que bauticen a su hijo. Al hacerlo, aceptas la responsabilidad de entrenar a N en la práctica de la fe. Será su deber traer a N para guardar los mandamientos de Dios como Cristo nos enseñó al amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo. ¿Comprende claramente lo que está haciendo? Padres: lo hacemos. Sacerdote (a los padrinos): padr inos, N y N, ¿estás listo para ayudar a los padres de este niño en su deber como padres cristianos? Padrinos: Estoy.¹

Estas son las promesas que ustedes, los padres y padrinos, hicieron en el bautismo de un niño. Estas son promesas hechas a Dios que son imperativas de mantener. Pero no es solo una promesa hecha a Dios sino también un compromiso como "la iglesia doméstica". Padres, ustedes son los primeros catequistas de sus hijos. A través de su ejemplo aprenden a vivir la fe cristiana católica. Ustedes son llamados como familia a "ejercer el

sacerdocio de los bautizados de manera privilegiada" mediante la recepción de los sacramentos, la oración y la acción de gracias, el testimonio de una vida santa y la abnegación y la caridad activa. "Así, el hogar es la primera escuela de vida cristiana y 'una escuela para el enriquecimiento humano'. ² Tus hijos pueden aprender mucho de ti. Pueden aprender a amar a Dios y amar a su prójimo a través de su ejemplo. Pero ¿por qué menciono "la iglesia doméstica" y por qué menciono el "sacerdocio de los bautizados?" De nuevo padres, pueden enriquecer la fe cristiana continua de su hijo asegurándose de que el niño continúe su formación cristiana en las clases de CCD. Sí, padres, es útil que traigan al niño a las clases de CCD, pero también NECESITAMOS SU AYUDA en

la instrucción de sus hijos. Practique las oraciones con sus hijos, pregúnteles qué aprendieron en clase y trate de responder sus preguntas sobre lo que han aprendido. Hay varios recursos como los catequistas de CCD, yo mismo o cualquiera de los otros sacerdotes o varios libros y artículos que pueden ayudarte a responder las preguntas de tus hijos. Padres, continúen cumpliendo las promesas bautismales y aprendan o actualicen sus instrucciones con sus hijos para que puedan crear o "hacerse creyentes" junto con todos [sus] hogares ". ³ Por favor, ayúdele a su hijo a entender que Jesús es el Pan de La vida que puede satisfacer su hambre, que puede darles paz, que siempre está presente en sus vidas. ¡Sea ese ejemplo vivo, registrándolos para las clases de CCD! Recuerde que el miércoles, 5 de septiembre es el último día para el registro de la clase CCD en la Iglesia de San Patricio.
