At Birmingham, over 2,000 students represent the University in regional, national and inter-varsity competitions, while many hundreds of students take part in Intra-League sports or Active Lifestyle classes. When you’re part of University Sport you are part of the biggest club on campus. Learn more at www.sport.bham.ac.uk and visit the Sports Fair on 19 September.
Guild of StudentsRepresenting over 28,000 students, the Guild of Students is the University of Birmingham’s recognised students’ union. Run by students for students, the Guild campaigns to enhance your experience of student life. The Guild represents students and brings them together on issues they care about to create positive change and achieve equality for and within its membership. Every student at the University of Birmingham is automatically a member of the Guild, which is a great way to meet new people and build up networks of contacts and support.
Clubs and Societies Benefiting from student life involves more than simply studying. Most students learn almost as much from the social and extra-curricular side of University life as they do through their course. During Welcome Week the Guild of Students hosts a variety of events. Most clubs and societies will offer taster sessions, so look around and see what appeals to you. Joining a sports club or trying out for a team is a great way of meeting new
people. There is a wide range of societies including LGBTQ, Student Parents, PG and Mature Students, Local Students and International Students. Visit Guild-run fairs during Welcome Week to find out more. For more information about the Guild of Students and its constitution visit: www.guildofstudents.com
Student RepsYou might consider becoming a Student Rep for a chance to represent the other students on your course and have an impact on your collective learning experiences. Your School will be recruiting Student Reps within the first few weeks of term, so, if you’re interested, ask to speak to your School’s Staff Liaison Contact (SLC), or contact the Guild ([email protected]) for more information. Alternatively, make sure you get involved in electing your Student Rep, and keep in touch with him/her in order to provide feedback about your learning experience.

Personal Tutor SystemDuring your Induction your School/Department will assign you to a Personal Tutor who will be an academic experienced in your subject area and available to see you during their weekly office hours and by appointment. Make sure you make a note of the name and contact details of your personal Tutor as well as their office hours in this diary.
We expect you to have at least three meetings per year with your Personal Tutor who will help you review your progress and provide you with academic advice and guidance. It is important that you let your Personal Tutor know of anything that could be affecting your studies. This may include accommodation, finance, study skills and any problems you may be experiencing as you adjust to University life and independent learning.
Your Personal Tutor is here to help you plan your study and deal with unexpected problems and is supported by a Welfare Tutor within your School/Department, as well as a range of professional staff in Student Support Services, our Academic Skills Centre, Careers and Employability Centre, and the Guild of Students. Your Personal Tutor can advise you how to contact these services. Your Personal Tutor can help you understand, for example, what to do if you need an extension for an essay, how to make use of your feedback on your academic work, and how to make use of >>Progress>> – our professional planning development tool designed for our students.
Transition Review: Weeks 4 and 5, Semester Two: 28 January – 8 FebruaryHalf way through your first year you will meet with your Personal Tutor for Transition Review. This is an extended Tutorial to evaluate your progress. You will discuss your feedback and receive guidance on how to further develop your academic skills. Across campus there will also be a range of re-induction activities organised by Student Services, the Guild and the Sports Centre to help you get more involved and meet more new people. You will also have another opportunity to go on a Library tour in case you are still unable to find your way around. There will be fairs organised where you can learn about modules available outside your main discipline (MOMDs) in all our Schools/Departments that you may be able to take in your second year. The Careers and Employability Centre will also be organising events to help you begin to think about your career.
FeedbackThroughout your studies you will receive regular oral and written feedback on your academic work from your Tutors and from your peers. It is vital to use your feedback as it will help you understand what you are good at and what areas you need to improve. Feedback will enable you assess your own learning, allow you to understand what is expected of you, and help you improve your academic skills and understanding. If you don’t understand your feedback ask your Tutors and fellow students for help.

Student Diary 2012–13
Lectures, tutorials, essays, research, revision, part-time job, committee meetings, club nights, parties, matches, gigs, laundry, shopping, family, Facebook... students are busy people. It’s important to get a good balance between academic work and other activities. Getting a grip on time management is essential for success at University. Here are some tips to help you get started:
n Understand yourself: are you a morning person or night owl? Independent study is a big part of what you’ll do here and it’s up to you when to do it; knowing what time of day or night you learn best can help you structure your research, reading and revision. For more information on study skills visit: www.gel.bham.ac.uk
n Focus on your goals: what do you want to achieve this year? Get good results, join a student group and do some work experience? There is so much going on at University, it’s easy to get distracted – be clear about what you want to do and what’s going to help you get there.
n Write things down in one place... like this diary! Academic tutors, student support and admin services will fill your inbox with notices about events, deadlines, things you need to action, and you will also want to blank out time for social events and some relaxing ‘downtime’! It’s easy to lose track of what you need to do, so keep on top by having everything in one place.
n Don’t miss out: there are so many opportunities available at University, from great student groups and work placements to funding opportunities. Check your emails regularly and sign up for newsletters and e-alerts.
n Plan and prioritise: deadlines for handing in essays and other things like applications for work experience placements and part-time jobs tend to come at once; create your own deadlines and enter these into your diary.
n Be realistic about time: an afternoon to research and write a 2500 word essay? 30 minutes to write an effective application for a job? 15 minutes to do your washing when there’s a queue? Allocate enough time for your tasks to do them well and build in time for the unexpected (eg, printer cartridges running out or the book you need not being available).
n Treat university like a full-time job: structure each day with tasks and put these into your diary alongside all the ‘usual’ activities (essay deadlines, seminars, meetings). Use the timetable at the front of your diary for your weekly commitments. Tasks could include checking your student email account, research in the library, reading around your subject, writing up notes, etc...
n Reward your efforts: if you’ve been working at your PC for an hour, make a cup of tea and give yourself a 10 minute break. Scheduling in breaks from your work is important, especially during times like the exam/revision period.
