where diseases such as West syndrome, Lennox syndrome and severe myoclonic epilepsies of infancy, none of which show myoclonic seizures as the main symptom, are included in this category . Aicardi has helpfully arranged these diseases, assigning Lennox syndrome and myoclonic epilepsies to the two extremes of a series of epileptic syndromes, placing the various intermediate types between these two extremes. But there are cases showing fluctuation among the extreme and intermediate types even in the same patient, because of changes due to the therapeutic or temporal course, age-related changes, etc. How to classify such cases, however, is not referred to in this book.
In the International Classification established in 1981, complex partial seizures (CPS) are defined as partial seizures with impairment of consciousness. Partial seizures that show complex symptoms such as psychic seizure, affective seizure, etc, all of which were assigned to the classification of 1969, are included in simple partial seizures . However, the author , who considers it illogical

to treat these seizures separately because of the close relation between CPS and these seizures, summarizes these seizures as affective-psychic and CPS (AP-CPS) . Because it is particularly difficult to evaluate disturbed consciousness in children, the author's classification seems more appropriate. The author lists HHE syndrome, a syndrome with cystic enlargement of the occipital horn, benign epilepsies of childhood with affective symptoms , etc, as specific syndromes included in AP-CPS .
In the third part , the author interprets neonatal seizures, epilepsies in infants, febrile convulsions, status epilepticus and reflex epilepsy as specific syndromes in terms of age " cause, and duration and precipitation of seizures. Differential diagnosis and treatment are described in the Final section.
This is an important work and has been compiled through great efforts. It contains 1,600 references on modern clinical pediatric epileptology and draws from its author's long experience and deep insight.
