ABOUT THEATRE1

‘...absolutely flawless. Nothing short of West End quality.’ - Love Midlands Theatre

Theatre1 was launched in 2014 by David Reynolds and Laura Foxcroft to produce small-scale off-Broadway/off-West End musical theatre, often not seen in the area.

With extensive experience of producing contemporary musical work, the award-winning team have worked for many years developing theatre in a signature high-energy, ensemble style.

Our mission is to produce high quality contemporary musical theatre and to be a champion of new and non-mainstream work.

We hope to bring new writing to new audiences, and new interpretations to the stage.

After a hugely successful run of Jason Robert Brown’s seminal song-cycle Songs for a New World in 2015, Theatre1 return to the MET Studio with Dogfight.

ABOUT DOGFIGHT

‘See a world, beautiful and strange…’

November 21, 1963.

On the eve of the Kennedy assassination, America unknowingly awaits events that will forever change the world.

A group of young marines gather in San Francisco the night before they ship off to Vietnam.

Wanting to celebrate their last night of freedom they initiate a brutal game – the Dogfight – where every player sets out to find the ugliest girl he can and fool her into attending a party as his ‘date’.

The rules are simple: every man pays the $50 entrance fee, and the marine with the ugliest girl pockets the cash.

New recruit Eddie Birdlace is running out of time to find a date when he meets wide-eyed waitress Rose Fenny in a diner. He invites her to the party – her very first party – and, delighted, she accepts.

The Dogfight: for Rose, a party and ‘nothing short of wonderful’; for Eddie, a routine thrill of an evening to bag the ugliest girl. But as the murmurs of war grow louder, this awkward meeting of souls is equally as unexpected as it is breathtaking.

When she discovers the truth about Eddie’s cruel intentions she feels angry and upset. Guilt-ridden, he pursues Rose and tries to convince her to give him a second chance before he ships off to give for his country.

After an ill-fated beginning an awkward love story begins to unfold, but can their relationship stand the test of time, or will it be one of the many casualties of war…?

Full of the guttural energy of life as a US marine, this hilarious and touching new musical is both a poignant reminder of the events that shook the world pre-Vietnam and also an acutely sensitive insight into every person’s need for compassion and human connection.
