Long term strategy at Oxford?• Long term (10 years) Plan = Large Tracking Detector Mechanics

Group:– Same people form core team on LHCLHC upgrade ILC CLIC FCC mu-C you name it: core expertise is shared in person not just on paper

– Facilities in department expand to become • more universal (don’t just serve one experiment)• longer lived (outlive one experiment)• supported by core team in the long term

– “Large Tracker” because • that ability sets us aside from others in UK and Europe and • all future collider detector will have a large and a small tracker • more people want to do vertex than large tracker

– Note: large trackers can include “aggressive” versions of CMOS MAPS

Current EU developments• AIDA2 (Oct.2015+4yrs) contains proposal for “Thermo-

mechanical test facility for Si tracker structures at Oxford”• Merge the following into one facility

– ATLAS tracker integration facilities (cold/dry room, cold box, cooling systems, grey room, ESPI, capacitive displacement sensors)

– 32 channel absolute distance FSI system (AMULET)– Thermal Imaging system– Shaker table– New deformation measurement tool (Liverpool)?

• Refurbish the space as much as possible• Get an EU funded post doc to run the facility • Invite collaborators to use some time in it for their tracker

Current UK developments

• LCUK detector branch is returning from funding shock induced coma

• One aspect of SOI to re-vive LC detector program contains a “Silicon Activity”

• Focus is on “We request funding for a programme leading to the design of a silicon pixel tracking detector in the forward and central regions. …. potential to provide increased performance with lower mass and lower cost than the current baseline tracking technologies.”

Current UK developments• We will assess contending pixel technologies and simulate potential

pixel architectures. We will address the engineering challenges posed by power and cooling requirements, develop models with realistic material distributions, and use them as input to physics performance studies.

• The level of support required per year is estimated to be – £15k for coordination of the silicon programme through national and

international meetings and facilities, – £15k for mechanical and design support from RAL TD, – £8k for access to CEI expertise at the Open University, and – £10k for mechanical test structures, prototypes and testing equipment. – A total of XX staff years of effort will additionally be provided from

institutes through existing funding.

Three “Answers”1. ILC tracker mechanics involvement only possible if started

“parasitically” (Richard does not like the word synergy) a) In CG bid for the “tracker mechanics group” with three branches,

ATLAS, LHC-B, ILC and admit that the ILC fraction consists largely of overlap with the other two

2. Stay out of FCC-ee option as it threatens the more interesting LC options

a) now mention of FCC-pp option on next RG for tracker mechanics (too much diversity kills, we are under manned)

3. Synergies in mechanics best found in very advanced methods (integrated large micro channels, advanced CFRP designs, advanced geometries, integration of services, Assemblability)

LHC similarities to ILC (SiD) tracker

• SiD tracker wants X0 per layer at 90 degrees– < 1% for silicon tracker (5 layers), σr*φ = 12 (SCT=17 µm)– < 0.3% for vertex (5 layers), σr*φ = 4-7 µm

• similarities between SiD tracker and SCT upgrade • Current default cooling is air but nobody knows

how to cope with vibrations from required turbulent flow

From Similarities to Strategy• Which R&D direction might give

– the ultimate ILC silicon tracker i.e. thin, stiff, modular– possibly be useful for SCT upgrade (if finished in time)

• Need to be very aggressive on– geometry:

• high areal moment of inertia installation modules possibly spanning multi layers (think in 3D shapes)

• advanced geometries (the football)– materials: UHM CF with novel cores – cooling: bi-phase kapton micro-channels – sensors: 50 micron thin CMOS maps– services: multi layer Aluminium-Kapton tapes – full integration: co-cure cooling, services and structures
