1 Starting A trainee teacher of English taking initial training (or an unqualified but practising teacher of English.)

At this stage:

You are studying for an initial teaching qualification

You are intending to become a teacher of English, at primary, general secondary, vocational, higher school or in the private language school sector

So far you have limited practical teaching experience

Find articles on the Think section at www.teachingenglish.org.uk/think to help write assignments

Try the Language Assistants website for inexperienced teachers of English

Observe and talk to experienced teachers of English


2 Newly-qualified A qualified teacher of English in the first two years of practice

At this stage:

You have an initial qualification

You work in a primary, general secondary, vocational or higher school, or in the private language school sector

You have no more than 2-years’ full-time experience

You may be working towards full accreditation as a teacher of English

Join your local English teachers’ association and participate in their community

3 Developing A practising qualified teacher of English with more than 2 years of experience, and needs to develop essential skills.

You have an initial teaching qualification and have completed at least 2-years’ full-time teaching

4 Proficient An experienced qualified teacher of English with strong all-round knowledge and skills.

You have an initial English teaching qualification and may be working towards a further qualification as a teacher of English

Steps to Success

A course for newly-qualified teachers of English at stage 2 on the CPD framework

The course covers 10 topics which new teachers of English commonly need help with during their first two years of training

The course helps newly-qualified teachers revise what they have learnt in initial training and put key concepts and techniques into practice

There is an option for a tutor to assess the portfolio of tasks that participants produce during the course, and receive a certificate of attainment


In-Service Teacher DevelopmentA series of ten individual 90-minute workshopsTopics covered are process writing, learners, reflective practice and grammarSuitable for teachers of English who want to familiarise themselves with some key areas of current ELT practice


Communicative Assessment• Thus is a 20-hour online self-access

course for teachers and examiners of English who are interested in exploring new approaches to assessment and testing
