Reflections from the PrincipalWhen asked to write the Principal’s Reflections, the first two words that came to my mind were: ‘Courageous Community’. We are faced with the biggest challenge that the world has seen for quite some time, COVID-19. On Wednesday 25 March 2020, we said goodbye to our students as they exited the School grounds to start their Off Campus learning program. Two days later, our staff commenced teaching online. The last time students were kept off the School campus was during World War II.

It has been a surreal experience for everyone involved. However, this was a decision that needed to be made for the safety of our community and one that Perth College once again pioneered. It was one of those historical moments when we were called to truly live our values of being capable, courageous and caring.

The words of New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern rung true:

“But we have no time to waste. We could have waited to plan every intricate detail required to execute this closure, till we could answer every single question or circumstance, but every hour we wait, is one more person, two more people, three more people, exposed to Covid-19. That is why we did not wait.”

This year, one of our commitments was to ensure that, in every decision we made, we would put the students at the centre and do what is right for them. This was never truer than the decision to move the learning online.

Out of this challenging period has come much kindness, support and encouragement from our students, staff and families who make up our courageous community.

We have a long journey ahead beyond COVID-19 with the economic repercussions sure to bring us further challenges, so I conclude with the message that I hope the generosity of our community will continue through kind donations via the Perth College Foundation. There is not a more worthy cause than one that assists a Perth College student.

Message from the ChairHow dramatically life can change in just a few short weeks! With COVID-19 sweeping across the globe, no-one remains unaffected and the School and the Foundation have responded quickly to mitigate the effects on our community.

Given that this pandemic is unprecedented with dramatic effects on both the health and the economics of our nation, the role of the Foundation is thrown into stark relief. Whilst our State and Federal Governments address the immediate effects of coronavirus, they are simultaneously planning for the post COVID-19 era which will obviously involve significant national debt that will be with us for many years to come.

Our Foundation is relatively young when compared to many of the long established schools on the east coast for instance and, although we would have preferred to have longevity to build a larger capital base to confront the challenges of the post COVID-19 era, nonetheless we stand ready to assist the School as much as we can as they navigate the challenges which will follow this crisis.

In saying this however, we remain resolute in maintaining our focus on building the capital base as our long-term vision is for the investments in our three Funds to return reliable and growing income streams which will service the ongoing needs of the School.

Our current financial position is healthy with assets growing from $14,840,100 in 2018 to $16,212,000 at the end of 2019. However, as demonstrated in the graphs in the Finance section of this Report, even strong investment returns such as those which our portfolio attracted in 2019, in no way compare to the significant uplift which donations provide to the capital base. We therefore remain hugely dependent on the extended Perth College family to continue their magnificent support so that future generations of Perth College girls can enjoy expanded facilities and resources just as the current generation has benefited through the generosity of those who have gone before them.

As the Foundation tackles the challenges of the next few years, we will be reliant on an increasing Board workload and I acknowledge and thank all Foundation Board members for their ongoing commitment. Similarly, the unstinting efforts of Natalie Swannell and Caroline Risah from Community Relations are acknowledged with gratitude as they convert our vision into action on the ground. I’d especially like to acknowledge the contribution of Nick Stanisis who served on the Foundation Board since inception and retired at the end of 2019. The Foundation is delighted that School Council has nominated Geoff Mather to replace him. We have also been fortunate that Bree Ludlow agreed to re-join our Board as she brings extensive experience in commercial law and has had a long and committed association with the School.

2020 and beyond will be challenging for us all and we understand that each member of our community will be impacted differently as the fallout of COVID-19 takes effect. The Foundation empathises and has therefore suspended all fundraising efforts for the time being. However, we will eventually reach the other side of this crisis and we trust that the enviable philosophy of giving, so evident in successive generations of caring and involved Perth College communities, will remain a hallmark of who we are.

A tremendous thank you is extended to all our Donors for every single gift, large or small, through 2019. The Foundation also looks forward to maintaining our connections through 2020 so that it can continue its valuable work to ensure that, with your help, the School remains well placed to deliver its highly prized first-class, holistic education to many future generations of girls.

With best wishes

FinanceSince inception, the Foundation has been focussed on growing a significant capital base and achieving steady investment returns which will build long-term security for the School. In particular the Foundation is planning for those times when the School needs additional support to meet strategies related to capital works, upgrades and refurbishments of existing facilities and expansion of its Scholarship base, the latter of which ensures that the School maintains its prized commitment to richness and diversity.

In its formative years the Foundation established a standing Investment Committee in recognition of its critical role in the stewardship of funds under management. This Committee works closely with our external fund manager JB Were and is guided in its investment decisions by a detailed Board-approved Investment Policy which is regularly reviewed. Prudent management of fund capital and earnings, together with generous contributions from our community, has steered the Foundation over the eight years since its inception to a net asset position of just over $16 million; additionally, contributions to the School of nearly $1.5 million have been made in that time. Financial Year 2019 saw very healthy investment performance for all three of our Funds as demonstrated in the charts on page 9.

However, with the fallout effects of COVID-19 on the Australian and global economies, the Foundation recognises that we will face headwinds, especially in the year ahead, which will require constant vigilance and continual liaison with our advisers as we navigate this challenging investment environment.

Importantly, the graphs confirm that, notwithstanding good investment performance through 2019, the single most significant element in growing our capital base is donations, whether they are through bequests or aggregated donations year-on-year. We therefore remain hugely dependent on our wonderful extended school community for support in growing our funds to a position which secures long-term sustainability for Perth College.

Living Generously – Growing the Foundation’s Scholarships

Scholarships not only retain the richness and diversity of the School by providing a Perth College education to girls who might otherwise be unable to attend; but also provide a wonderful platform for recipients to optimise opportunities throughout their lives.

Jaymee Park’s life was changed dramatically in 2016 when she was awarded the Foundation’s Margaret and Patricia Feilman InsideOut Scholarship. Jaymee says “it was nothing short of a great opportunity”.

Jaymee graduated in 2018 and kindly shared her story and the impact her education at Perth College has had on her and her family.

The scholarship gave me new life and motivation in a time of need and allowed me to pursue my dreams and goals. The opportunities I received as a result cannot ever be forgotten or replaced.

When reflecting on my time at Perth College, I not only received a great education and met new people but also expanded my athletic horizons through participation in IGSSA Sports, specifically IGGSA Rowing which later became a major part of my life.

Growing up in Broome, I was a regular participant in a variety of local sports teams. And whilst living in a small town always has its limitations, I was still determined to succeed and achieve my goals.

The Margaret and Patricia Feilman InsideOut Scholarship meant a lot more to me than just receiving an education and participating in sport. With the financial assistance, I was able to be a boarder providing reassurance for my family that I would be in a trusting and safe environment.

The adjustment of living in the Boarding House was difficult but proved invaluable as I learnt many new skills and life lessons which proved vital to my future successes.

Two years on from graduation I am completing a Bachelor of Exercise Sports Science majoring in Nutrition and plan to continue with additional studies in Rehabilitation Science.

In addition, I am completing a Diploma in Business with the plan to one day have a business of my own.

Never one to let go of my competitive side and love of sport, I have continued rowing. Currently I am ranked in WA’s U21 top VIII with hopes of representing the green and gold in the not too distant future.

Jaymee’s story highlights the value of scholarships and reinforces the reasons why the expansion of the Scholarship base has been a Foundation objective since inception.

Boarding House Appeal A Home Away from Home

When the founding Sisters established Perth College, they were determined to provide educational opportunities for the daughters of families in rural Western Australia as well as those who were city based. So it was that our first boarder enrolled in 1902 when Perth College was founded and it has remained “A Home Away from Home” for successive generations ever since.

After 25 years of consistent use, School Council decided to upgrade the existing Boarding House to ensure it remained leading edge, and in 2019 the latest phase of a three-stage renovation and refurbishment was completed. Perth College’s Boarding House now offers one of the most contemporary boarding school facilities in Western Australia with refurbishments to common areas and bedrooms significantly enhancing the boarding experience.

The Foundation’s Home Away from Home Appeal was launched in 2019 to continue our strong connection with past and current rural families and to invest in the ones yet to come.

Old Girls and families were given the opportunity to donate with an amount of their choosing or secure naming opportunities for various common rooms and bedrooms. To date seven single bedrooms, the Green Room and Seminar Room have been named and $2,275 in financial gifts have been received taking the Appeal’s donation total to $67,275.

The Foundation aims to keep the Home Away from Home Appeal open for others to consider as they become aware of the impact which ongoing funding makes to the Boarding House. Naming opportunities remain for a range of bedrooms and the Garden Room. General donations will also be gratefully received as equipment and minor upgrades are ongoing requirements to maintain our boarding facilities in peak condition.

2019 Annual Giving Appeal

Consider “living generously” was the thought posed to our community when the Annual Giving Appeal was distributed in May 2019 and the Foundation is grateful to those members of our community who generously supported their choice of the Scholarship, Building or General Funds. Details of the donations resulting from this year’s Appeal are illustrated in the infographic on the right.

A new initiative offered for our younger Old Girls (18-30 years of age) in this year’s Appeal was the option to ‘give back’ both financially and/or in time by expressing their interest to participate in mentoring, sport, volunteering or guest speaking opportunities. Those who responded with their chosen area of interest were provided with information on the options currently available including Old Girls’ Association and Young Old Girls’ Advisory committee positions, tutoring and speaking opportunities at the School.

Class Gift Appeal

Expansion of the Foundation’s scholarship offerings is a key objective of the Board. Importantly our Donors also identify closely with the importance of scholarships in opening the door to a Perth College education for girls who would otherwise not have the opportunity.

In 2018, in partnership with the Old Girls’ Association (OGA), the Foundation launched the Class Gift Appeal with the goal of eventually raising $25,000 to fund a once-off half-scholarship for a student to attend Perth College for Years 11 and 12. As this new half-scholarship will be funded by Old Girls, it shall be awarded to a daughter or granddaughter of an OGA member. In just two years, alongside the OGA’s calendar of events, this Appeal has already raised $7,426!

Contributions to the Class Gift Appeal are now also being considered a worthy cause by our Year 12 students who readily identify with PC’s philosophy of living generously. Our 2019 Leavers are leading the way by making a pledge that they would support the Appeal as Old Girls after graduation.

We are truly grateful for our Old Girls’ support and passion for this Appeal and the Foundation looks forward to awarding this half-scholarship to a deserving recipient immediately following the achievement of this goal.

Scholarship Fund Donor Breakfast

Building on the tremendous success of our inaugural breakfast in 2018, the Scholarship Fund Donor Breakfast returned and once again highlighted to our supporters the impact and importance of scholarships to our growing number of recipients.

John Palermo, Secretary to the Board of Governors of the Feilman Foundation which funded the establishment of our InsideOut Scholarship in accordance with the wishes of the late sisters Margaret and Patricia Feilman (both highly credentialled Perth College Old Girls), shared his insights into philanthropy and gave considerable food for thought to an engaged audience. John also led our panel discussion with four Perth College scholarship recipients, Olivia, Nadia, Amy and Keeley who represented both those still studying at Perth College and those who had graduated and moved onto tertiary education or careers.

Chatting to guests after the formal part of the breakfast, everyone was incredibly impressed with the presentation and speaking skills of the young women on the panel. Many of those attending also remarked on how moved they were by the obvious gratitude of these young women in being able to attend Perth College and how much it had impacted their lives and that of their families.

Growing our scholarship numbers remains a priority for the Foundation and sentiments expressed at the 2019 Scholarship Fund Donor Breakfast were a resounding endorsement of this ongoing commitment.

Foundation ActivitiesThe Foundation takes a proactive approach to ensuring our Donors feel valued and thanked for their gifts and arranges a selection of touchpoints every year. The Board aims to communicate personally with Donors and on a regular basis, invite them to various events and engagement opportunities, acknowledge milestones and celebrations, and share news and/or achievements.

The YOGA Initiative – Personal Observations of a Younger Old Girl

“When we invest in women and girls, we are investing in the people who invest in everyone else.” – Melinda Gates.

As we begin to reflect on the past year, the words emphasised by Melinda Gates has really echoed the Foundation’s belief of creating an environment where girls support each other. In fostering a culture of giving, we can nurture more remarkable women for the future. It can come in many forms, from mentoring to funding scholarships, with each playing their role in shaping someone’s pathway. We’re about lifelong learning, so it’s something that should not stop when girls complete their secondary education.

Some niggling questions came to our minds: How many of us can confidently say our learnings are complete at 17 years of age? How many of us can bravely say we know what career paths lie ahead for us and how to navigate them? And how many of us have a well-written handbook on how to balance family and work?

Having identified that PC’s younger Old Girl community wanted to stay in touch with the School but was unsure how to manage this with early career challenges and family commitments, the Foundation decided to launch an initiative which would attempt to address the needs of younger Old Girls in the 18 to 30 year age range.

The Foundation worked in collaboration with the Old Girls’ Association and younger Old Girls to discuss and discover what does lifelong learning and giving at Perth College mean and how can we continue to equip our younger Old Girls with the skills for their future?

The outcome was the launch of the Young Old Girls’ Strategy (YOGS) in early 2019.

Yoga by YOGA Launch event

Perth College Foundation Inc. 2019 Annual Report 17

The Strategy’s focus is twofold: to continually invest in our Old Girls, and to inspire our Old Girls to give back to those that come after them.

Once the Strategy was finalised, our enthusiastic young Old Girls established the Young Old Girls Advisory (YOGA) sub-committee and publicly launched the initiative with ‘Yoga by YOGA’ in May 2019. As a proud sponsor of the inaugural event, the Foundation saw over 50 young Old Girls join the wellness morning with 39 girls expressing an interest in giving back to the school as mentors, volunteers and attending networking functions.

The attendees provided feedback to the YOGA sub-committee with interest for professional development events around resilient mindsets, confidence building and communication skills. This led the Foundation to subsequently support 18 scholarships for the one-day Perth College Flourish Conference in October 2019, equipping the girls with tools to flourish in a changing,

uncertain world long into the future. The success of our pilot year has sparked a new initiative for our second year, a mentoring program amongst Old Girls and younger Old Girls for mid-2020.

As our reflection concludes, on behalf of the Foundation, I’d like to personally thank each and every person for dreaming with us and bringing YOGA to life. There is something special about our PC community, and for me, it’s that we are a school that doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the talk. The establishment of this Strategy marks the Foundation’s long-term commitment to younger Old Girls and I could not be more proud to call myself a PC girl.

The Young Old Girls’ Strategy (YOGS)

The Foundation and the Old Girls’ Association agreed to collaborate on a strategy that encourages our younger alumni (18 to 30 years old) to stay connected to the School during that time in their lives when career and family responsibilities take centre stage. The project was launched in early 2019 and has been so well received that the Foundation is committed to underwriting further events through 2020, COVID-19 permitting.

Continue to Cultivate our School Community Connections

It was always recognised that this would be an ongoing project and remains critical for the Foundation which needs to optimise its reach to the broadest possible school community. In particular, it was determined that the Foundation needed to reach out to our country communities and had scheduled visits to Bunbury and Albany through 2020. However, given the constraints of COVID-19, these visits will now be deferred until 2021.

Scholarships

Whilst expansion of our scholarship numbers remains a priority for the Foundation, it was agreed with the new Principal that it was an opportune time to review the overall approach to the School’s Scholarship Program. Accordingly, both Foundation and Council-funded Scholarship Programs underwent a thorough review; the outcome is that updated selection criteria, as well as clear scholarship terms and conditions relevant to the times are now in place. Scholarships awarded each year therefore currently remain at 18.

Investment Review

As part of its governance responsibilities, the Foundation had scheduled a review of its investment risk criteria and overall investment objectives in 2019. This was undertaken in conjunction with the Investment Manager, JB Were, and the outcome confirmed that the Investment Committee Charter remains relevant and the alignment of the portfolio to the income and capital objectives of the Foundation remains robust.

2019 AchievementsThe Foundation set itself the following projects during 2019. These were well considered as part of the Foundation’s long-term strategy and the report card can be summarised as follows:

Partially Achieved Not AchievedFully Achieved

Year 3 students in the Maker Space working on an

Integrated STEaM project

Perth College Foundation Inc. 2019 Annual Report 21

Each year the Foundation sets itself discrete projects in support of its longer-term vision.

However, given the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 issue and its consequential flow-on effect which has given rise to a complex Australian and international financial environment, our focus will primarily be on guiding the Foundation through a difficult investment environment; also ensuring that we keep our sights on the long-term vision of steady growth of our capital base, albeit that there may be headwinds from time to time.

We will continue to steward funds in the best interests of the Foundation and will obviously maintain all our recurring commitments to the School such as scholarships, staff support and sponsorships.

Given that COVID-19 led to the Foundation cancelling functions scheduled for 2020, we will endeavour to keep in touch with as many as possible of our school community, through digital information flow and/or telephone contact (whichever is preferred by our supporters) as we all navigate through these challenging times and make every effort to support each other.

Perth College Foundation Inc. 2019 Annual Report 23

Whilst most of the Perth College extended family is aware of the work of the Foundation as we move into our eighth year of existence, we are conscious that new families join our community each year and are often unsure of our role and relationship with the School.

The Perth College Foundation was launched in 2012 with the aim of building a culture of giving as it was recognised then and has become more starkly relevant since, that fees alone would not enable the necessary future developments demanded of a school whose aim is to remain at the forefront of innovation

and educational excellence. The Foundation has recognised the importance of building long-term financial security by growing a healthy capital base; over time this will generate earnings from which it can expand its overall support to the School.

However, this long-term focus has not been at the expense of year-on year support and the Foundation is proud that it has outlaid assistance to the School in the order of $1.5 million for the period 2013 to the present.

Our guiding principles remain as follows:

The Role of the Foundation

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The primary objective of the Foundation is to build long-term financial security for the School in order that Perth College will always be able to offer first class educational facilities, a quality learning environment and the maintenance of

its strong sense of community thereby ensuring the continued provision of exceptional opportunities for all our students.

This will be achieved by judicious allocation of funds, over time, for:

• Capital works projects, land acquisitions and refurbishments in support of the School’s long-term Master Plan and;

• Expansion of our Scholarship base to ensure that the School maintains its richness and diversity by providing opportunities to

deserving girls from all walks of life who might otherwise be unable to enjoy a Perth College education.
