ABOUT THE ARTISTS

iOTAiOTA, an award-winning singer, songwriter, musician, producer, playwright, stage performer, film actor and visual artist, has been very busy since his last studio album release back in 2006. Since then, he has performed in critically acclaimed productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Sydney Dance Company’s Berlin, while also writing and starring in the international fringe theatre hit Smoke & Mirrors, the

Sydney Opera House show Young, Hard and Solo, and most recently the controversial and acclaimed B-Girl, also at the Sydney Opera House. Along the way, he has picked up Helpmann and Green Room awards for outstanding performances and productions.

He has written, recorded and produced two albums in the last 12 months: a self-titled opus written while on set in the desert of Namibia shooting Fury Road, and Wolf Number Nine. Whatever role he finds himself in, iOTA is finally living the role he was born to play: that of an exceedingly capable individual and powerful performer – no masks, no disguises, no gimmicks, just himself.

Tim RogersHailing from a mining town in WA, Tim Rogers has taken his talents to the world in a career that encompasses music, film, television and stage. As the frontman of You Am I, he has released ten studio albums, three of which have debuted at #1: Hi Fi Way (1995), Hourly, Daily (1996) and #4 Record (1998) – with the records receiving ARIA Awards and platinum and gold status. The band has been released internationally and headlined shows across

North America and Europe. He has also released critically acclaimed solo albums, and a number of collaborations with musicians such as Tex Perkins, The Temperance Union and The Bamboos. In 2012 he released his fifth and most recent solo album, the acclaimed Rogers Sings Rogerstein.

One of his most notable film roles was in the 2013 musical-thriller film The Boy Castaways with fellow Australian musician Megan Washington, and he appeared alongside Mia Wasikowska in the film Tracks. He has stood in front of 50,000 screaming rock fans, but is just as at home playing an acoustic guitar and joking with the locals in a country town venue.

Steve KilbeySteve Kilbey was born in England in 1954 and – as lead singer-songwriter and bass guitarist – formed the psychedelic rock band The Church in Sydney in 1980. The Church has released 24 studio albums and 34 singles, including ‘Under the Milky Way’ (from Starfish, 1988), which brought the band international fame and was named Single of the Year in the 1989 ARIA Awards.

The band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010, and the following year Steve Kilbey was inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has written three books, including Something Quite Peculiar, and released many musical collaborations. He now lives in Coogee.

Deborah ConwayDeborah Conway has been a significant and eloquent contributor to Australian music for more than 30 years. Her first band Do-Ré-Mi topped the charts; her first solo album achieved platinum sales while simultaneously becoming the most shoplifted album of that year. She continues to release albums that attract acclaim from reviewers and appreciative audiences alike, most recently Stories of Ghosts, described as ten dialogues around themes from the Torah, from an atheist Jewish perspective.

Deborah Conway has pursued a career of extracurricular activities alongside the core business of writing, recording and performing her songs. In 2015 the 5/4 anthem ‘Alive and Brilliant’ – written with long-time collaborator Willy Zygier – was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive. Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier have just released Everybody's Begging, a follow-up to 2013's Stories of Ghosts.

AdalitaAdalita, lead singer of seminal band Magic Dirt, has been one of Australia’s most respected and influential artists for nearly two decades. You may well have grown up with her music, watching it evolve from the free-form distortion-drenched darkness of the early 90s to the confident, poised rock ’n’ roll of the album Girl. Or you might be a new fan, just beginning to explore her solo work released under her own name, dynamic and introspective.

The release of Adalita’s eponymous debut album in 2011 marked the advent of a remarkable new phase in an already illustrious career.

In 2013 her second album, All Day Venus, blitzed the music scene, landing her an Age Music Victoria award just a month after its release. In 2014, Adalita delivered a stirring keynote speech at the annual AIR Awards and received an ARIA Award Nomination for Best Female Artist.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Amanda PelmanCreative Director

As Cameron Macintosh described her, ‘a rock ’n’ roll chick from way back’, Amanda Pelman has signed artists (Kylie Minogue), managed artists into successful international careers (Indecent Obsession) and championed the careers of many others through her A&R roles in Australia and the UK. Recalled as the ‘nasty judge’ on Seven Network’s It Takes Two series, her on-

camera appearances didn’t start there but in the early 80s as a dancer on Countdown – prompted by her friend Molly Meldrum.

Amanda Pelman is the proud recipient of two ARIA Awards: for production on the live event Sound Relief (Best Music DVD 2010), and as Executive Producer of Tangier, the posthumous release for Billy Thorpe (Best Adult Contemporary Album 2011). Together with Michael Chugg and Billy Thorpe, she co-produced the enormously successful Long Way to the Top live concert series (2002–04). Her roles in casting and as a creative director have covered productions such as Priscilla Queen of the Desert, RENT, Oliver, Jolson, Fame, Fiddler, Always Patsy Cline (starring Deborah Conway) and Morning of the Earth (which features music by her partner Brian Cadd).

Christopher van TuinenConductor

Christopher graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in 2001. In 2005 he completed a Masters in Conducting at the VCA. Experienced in both vocal and instrumental music he was awarded the John Williams Conducting Scholarship for 2004-5. In 2006 he received a Green Room Award nomination in the ‘Best Conductor’ category. During

2008 and 2009 he was a member of the Young Artists program as a Conductor with Opera Australia and in 2007 he was appointed as the inaugural Conducting Fellow at the Australian Ballet.

In addition to his work as Chorus Director for WASO, Christopher is also Conductor of The University of Western Australia Choral Society, Musical Director of Fremantle Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Director of Lost and Found Opera.
