SAFE WAYS TO CONTROL PESTS AROUND YOUR Villa

Make Sure Your House Is Clean and Dry

Ÿ Many insects and rodents are attracted to food and water, so start off by making your home less enticing to pests.

Ÿ Wipe up spills immediately with soap and water.Ÿ Take out garbage daily and keep garbage cans clean of food residue.Ÿ Keep ripe fruit in the fridge.Ÿ Wash dishes daily, or at least submerge them in soapy water until you can get to them.Ÿ Make sure all food and beverage containers outside the fridge or freezer are tightly sealed.

Glass jars with rubber seals or plastic containers with tight snap-on lids are better than screw-top jars.

Ÿ Sweep and vacuum your floors regularly.Ÿ Keep bathroom and kitchen areas as dry as possible. Fix leaky faucets and don't let standing

water accumulate.

Seal Entryways

Ÿ Deny access to new invaders by making sure potential entry points are sealed off.

Ÿ Use silicone caulk to seal any cracks and crevices in baseboards, moldings, cupboards, pipes, ducts, sinks, toilets and electrical outlets.

Ÿ Place screens in front of heating and cooling vents, and repair holes in any existing screens. The average mouse found in homes can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime!

Ÿ Keep vegetation, stacked firewood and other debris away from the exterior of your house so pests can't climb up and in.

Choose Lower-Risk Pesticides

Ÿ Dust boric acid on cracks and crevices, which slowly poisons crawling insects like ants, cockroaches

Ÿ To control insects and rodents, try tamper-resistant bait boxes -- an effective and safer choice than sprays, powders or pellets, which all spread pesticide residues.

Ÿ Hire a professional trained in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which uses physical controls and low-toxicity products to manage pest problems.

Minimize Exposure

When using any pesticide, be sure to limit the exposure of everyone in your household.

Ÿ Avoid frequent, preventative applications. Never exceed the application rate indicated in the instructions.

Ÿ When applying pesticides, follow all precautions listed on the label, such as wearing gloves, masks or goggles.

Ÿ Make sure any baits, traps or pesticide residues are kept out of reach of children and pets.Ÿ Never dump leftover pesticides in the garbage, on the lawn, or down the drain, where it could

contaminate the soil or drinking water. Check with your public works department about how to dispose of hazardous waste.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Look. Pay attention to where there are pests in your home, how they enter, and how many there are. By watching and tracking pests in your home, you can better decide what actions to take.

Keep a clean home. Keeping a clean house is the best way to keep pests out. Some important things to pay attention to are:Ÿ Clean up food and drink spills right away.Ÿ Remove clutter ( such as cardboard boxes or paper) so pests have fewer places to hide.Ÿ Put food in tightly sealed containers, such as plastic with tight lids. Do not leave open

containers of food on counters or in cabinets. Put pet food dishes away overnight.Ÿ Keep trash in a closes container and take it out frequently - every day if possible. Do not let

trash pile up outside.Ÿ Fix plumbing or other water leaks. Pests need water sources to survive. Seal cracks and

holes. Use a caulk gun to seal cracks around baseboards, shelves, pipes, sinks and bathroom fixtures.

Use roach baits properly and only if necessary. Place baits out of the reach of children and pets.Ÿ Put the bait close to the pests hiding places. It must be closer than other sources of food.Ÿ Good spots for baits are next to walls, baseboards, under sinks, in cabinets and near

plumbing fixtures. Place baits in areas of roach activity.Ÿ Do not spray any pesticides. This will keep the pest away from the baits.

If needed, call a pest control professional. If you have taken all the steps describled above and still have a pest problem, you may need a professional to help.

Suggestions when using pesticides at home include:Ÿ Don’t stock up on pesticides. Buy only as much as you need.Ÿ Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and always use the

product strictly as directed. Do not use more than the recommended amount and make sure that you follow all safety precautions.

Ÿ Do not mix pesticides. You risk an unexpected and potentially dangerous chemical reaction.

Ÿ Store the pesticide in its original container with the lid firmly sealed and keep out of the reach of children, for example, locked in a high cupboard in the garage. Never transfer pesticides into containers that children might mistake for food or drink.

Ÿ Do not set traps or place baits in areas that are accessible to children, pets or native animals.Ÿ Wear the protective clothing suggested in the manufacturer’s instructions whenever you handle

or use the pesticide, for example, rubber gloves.Ÿ Do not eat, drink or smoke while using a pesticide.Ÿ Wash your hands after use.

GENERAL PESTICIDE SAFETY

IF YOU DECIDE that the best solution to your pest problem is chemical—by itself or, preferably, combined with non-chemical treatments—be aware that one of the greatest causes of pesticide exposure to humans is the use of pesticides in

When you realize a pesticide poisoning has occurred or is occurring, try to determine what the victim was exposed to and what part of the body was affected before you take action—taking the right action is as important as taking immediate action.

Swallowed poison. Call a emergency 115

Poison on skin. Drench skin with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin and hair thoroughly with soap and water. Later, discard contaminated clothing or thoroughly wash it separately from other laundry.

Chemical burn on skin. Drench skin with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing. Cover burned area immediately with loose, clean, soft cloth. Donot apply ointments, greases, powders, or other drugs. Later, discard contaminatedclothing or thoroughly wash itseparately from other laundry.

Poison in eye. Hold eyelid open and wash eye quickly and gently with clean cool running water from the tap or a hose for 15 minutes or more. Use only water; do not use eye drops, chemicals, or drugs in the eye. Eye membranes absorb pesticides faster than any other external part of the body, and eye damage can occur in a few minutes with some types of pesticides.

Inhaled poison. If the victim is outside, move or carry the victim away from the area where pesticides were recently applied. If the victim is inside, carry or move the victim tofresh air immediately.
