We would like to say a big thank you to all our supporters, trustees, staff,

alumni and volunteers

Review of the year

We sponsored 264 children at the African Village.

The scholars include children from Zambia and Malawi

as well as refugees from the UNHCR camps.

All our scholars attend the Pestalozzi Education Centre

alongside 163 fee-payers who are helping to make the

school self-sustaining.

We sponsored 201 scholars at the Asian Village.

The scholars include children from India, Nepal

and the Tibetan communities. The new Asian

Village was finally completed in 2015 and was

officially opened on 25th October.

Mobile Learning Centres Working in partnership with Edulution in Zambia we supported the development of a low cost education programme using new

technology and innovative coaching methods. Supporting our concept of the circle of success many of the coaches are

PestalozziWorld alumni who are helping to drive the project. Using the Khan Academy Lite programme the coaches have been able to

help 875 students improve their basic maths.

With a backpack full of tablets and a

raspberry pi, Mulenga can provide

education just about anywhere

Students using the tablets to learn maths under a tree!

PestalozziWorld was established in 1995 to advance the education of children in Asia and Africa using the Pestalozzi principles of

Head, Heart and Hands. Pestalozzi World Children’s Trust (PWCT) in the UK is the coordinating entity of PestalozziWorld, a working

alliance of several organisations inspired by the educational philosophy and the life of the Swiss social reformer Johann Heinrich

Pestalozzi (1746-1827).

The Pestalozzi Children’s Village Society in India and the Pestalozzi Zambia Children’s Trust are monitored regularly by the Trustees

and audited locally. Funds for Nepal and Thailand are sent directly to schools or local PestalozziWorld representatives.

Annual scholarship costs continue to be close to $1200 (£800) a year per child for board, travel, tuition and all other costs. Total

expenditure in 2015 was approximately $1.32 (£0.88) million. Expenditure for capital, mobile learning centres and the Pestalozzi

Education Centre of $0.65 (£0.43) million was funded primarily by the Pestalozzi Overseas Children’s Foundation in Switzerland.

Our funding comes from the private sector, including the founders, directors and trustees, other individuals, private foundations, and

corporate donors. Copies of the audited accounts are available on request from the respective offices. PWCT’s accounts are also

available on the Charity Commission website (www.charitycommission.gov.uk).

Registered fundraising charities operate in the USA, Switzerland and Ireland. The Swiss Trust makes grants directly to the national

operating trusts, mainly in connection with the capital costs in Zambia and India, while the US and Irish funds are managed through the

UK trust. Trustees do not receive any remuneration or expense reimbursement from the Trust. All expenses for the fundraising and

administration Trusts (including staff, travel and administration) are met by funds specifically provided by the Trustees or through

investment income.

Spotlight on students at the Asian Village

I am Akriti Subedi. I am from Nepal and I am under the scholarship of PestalozziWorld.

I am very grateful to this organization for giving me wonderful opportunities

to fulfil my dreams.

I was born in a remote place called Syangja, in Nepal. I joined

PestalozziWorld on 12th August, 2015. At present, I am in sixth standard. My

aim is to become a chartered accountant. My hobbies are singing, gardening

and reading story books. I am thankful to PestalozziWorld for their care, love

and affection.

I have many friends here from different nationalities. There is a very good

environment at the Asian Village and everyone is like a family member, they

are always ready to help me and provide support. In skills classes I have

learnt stitching and gardening.

When I become an independent woman, it will be my utmost duty to

contribute back to PestalozziWorld. They have been a supporting pillar and

helped me to become who I will be.

Spotlight on students at the Asian Village

My name is Dolker Lhamo. I have two elder brothers and an elder sister. I am a

Tibetan and I come from a remote Tibetan settlement (Kollegal) in Karnataka,

Southern India. At the early age of 11, I got into this wonderful organization that

holds the motto – Head, Heart and Hands. I take pride in saying that I am a

scholar of PestalozziWorld.

My stay at the Asian Village from the very beginning has taught me a lot. Since

this is the last year for me, I look back at the beautiful moments that I have

cherished. Not only focusing on what I have achieved in my studies but also

reflecting on what I have learnt about different cultures. Coming from a farming

background, it was a difficult for my parents to support my higher education but I

always had the urge to study and learn.

I plan to study medicine and psychology and hope to be a doctor one day. My

stay at the Village made me realize I have the potential to do more. I am very

thankful to this institute and I will surely contribute in one or the other way in the

future.

MEGHNA KANDARI

My name is Meghna Kandari. I come from Tehri Garhwal in India. I go to St.

Joseph’s academy. My favourite subjects are English, Physics, Chemistry,

Maths and Computer Science.

I became a part of the PestalozziWorld family on the 3rd September 2009 at

the age of 11. Since then, it has always been a second home to me. At

present, I m in my final year here and reflecting back to all the memories

collected over these seven years, I feel nostalgic. Pestalozzi has helped me

build the foundation of my dreams and given me support to move forward and

pursue them. It gave me inspiration and confidence to aim big in life.

I have my most beautiful memories from experiences at the Asian Village. I

have a keen interest in reading and gardening. I have always felt loved and at

home here. PestalozziWorld has given me friends who are like siblings,

teachers who are like parents and all the staff gave me a lot of love and care. I

too have a lot of respect for them.

I plan to pursue my studies in computer science to become a software

engineer. I am preparing for my IIT examination at present along with my class

twelve boards. I hope I can give back at least a bit of what I received. I shall

always have a huge amount of love and respect for PestalozziWorld.

I am the last born in a family of three girls, and I was born on 8 October 1998 in Lumezi Eastern

Province. I was raised by my mother as my father died in 2005 when I was in grade 1. My

family has survived on farming since my father’s death.

I was lucky to join the Pestalozzi family in 2009. It was difficult at the beginning but my mother’s

encouragement and the support of Pestalozzi staff helped me overcome all the challenges I

faced as I adjusted to my new life.

Spotlight on Students at the

African Village

I want to become a bio-medical scientist, study theatre and become the best actress in Africa. I am mostly inspired by my mother who

proved to be the most hardworking woman I know.

I am Afonso Fernando and I was born on 3rd April 1996 in Mavinga Cuando

Cubangu in Angola. Currently my family lives in the Mayukwayukwa Refugee

Camp in the Western Province of Zambia.

It was a blessing when I was selected to join PestalozziWorld in 2010. It was

quite challenging at first as I only spoke Portuguese but with time I became one

of the best English speakers and now I feel very proud of myself.

I like to read novels and take part in different sporting activities. I also enjoy song

writing and am inspired by Slap Dee a Zambian Musician. I am also inspired by

my mother as she is the most hardworking woman I have come across.

My hopes are to succeed in life by becoming a agricultural manager. I also

dreams of becoming the greatest musician. I love everything about Pestalozzi

especially when there are soccer matches and concerts.

I am Emelina Mfune and I come from Rumphi district in Malawi. I was born on 20th

May 2002. My family are subsistence farmers.

Pestalozzi came to my rescue in 2014 when I was in grade 5. Since then I have

learnt to speak English, this has been one of my greatest achievements. I hope one

day to be a sponsor especially for street children. I want to be a nurse and a

successful person and be active in sports.

I like playing netball, soccer and also listening to music. My role model is Thoko

Katimba a Malawian gospel artist due to the kind of music he produces. My

favourite events at Pestalozzi are when there is music and football matches.
