You are about to embark on an internet journey into the past to explore, discover and report on an Ancient Civilization/Native Culture!!
You will travel on your own or chose a partner who you think you will work well with.
When travelling, you will use your "Passport to the Past" to jot down the most important information that you discover/learn about each topic. Make sure you keep your passport neat and organized.
After you have completed your passport, you will take all of the information from it and use current technology to create a Keynote presentation on your Ancient Civilization/Native Culture.
You will also work at home to create a replica house. Your house must be a like representation and must be placed in a setting that is similar to the land of your civilization/culture. You may also include other details such as people, tools, food, etc.
Finally, on __________________ you will present your Keynote presentation and replica house to your peers and younger students to teach them about all of the interesting you have learned on your journey of discovery into the past.
Happy travels!!
Step 1: Chose your travel destination!!Spend tonight and tomorrow's block doing some general research on the these potential destinations:
Grade 6: WEST COAST NATIVE CULTURE, PLAINS NATIVES, INUIT and WOODLAND NATIVES.
Grade 5: ANCIENT CHINA, ANCIENT GREECE, ANCIENT ROME, ANCIENT EGYPT, ANCIENT INCA (SOUTH AMERICA), ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA (MIDDLE EAST), ANCIENT AZTECS (CENTRAL AMERICA), ANCIENT INDIA.
Have a "Top 3" list of your choices, as you may not get your first choice!

Step 2: Internet Time Travel!Learning Goals: Our class is learning how to do effective research using the internet and learning how to pick out the most important information (main ideas).
Success Criteria:
__ I read, watch and/or listen to a variety of media resources to get a "general" understanding of the topic I am researching.
__ I use my "Passport to the Past" to jot down the most important/relevant/interesting pieces of information that I have learned about each topic.
__ I take concise notes, jotting down only the important information, while cutting out the "fluff".
__ My notes are accurate and easy to understand and read.

Step 3: Keynote Presentation!Learning Goals: Our class is learning how to summarize information and present it effectively in a Keynote presentation.
Success Criteria:
__ I create an effective introductory page with a title, presenters names and a minimum of 5 appealing pictures.
__ I write a descriptive paragraph for each topic, which includes a topic sentence, good support details and elaborations and a concluding sentence. I insure my writing is in my own words.
__ I include subtitles for each topic.
__ I include three interesting labelled pictures for each subtopic that compliment my writing.
__ I proof read my writing to insure that I have used correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
__ Finally, I "pretty up" my Keynote by using appropriate fonts, colours, backgrounds and transitions.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Your child has recently embarked on a journey of discovery into the past! He/she is researching, collecting information and preparing and presenting a Keynote presentation on a Ancient Civilization or Native Culture.
The "homework" component of this project requires students to create a model replica of a house/structure that was used by their Civilization/Culture. As well, students should create an accurate environment (surrounding) in which to set their house. If students desire, they may also add more details to their houses/environments such as people, transportation, food, etc. **See the back of this paper for Success Criteria for your child to follow while completing this project.
Students are asked to bring their replica houses to school on _______________. They will then be used to compliment their Keynote presentations which will be displayed in the gym _______________ on ______________________. You are more than welcome to come and view your child's and his/her peers presentations during this time.
This is sure to be a rewarding and interesting learning journey!
Please fill in the bottom portion of this form and return to school by _____________
Thank you!

Step 4: Building of Replica House/StructureLearning Goals: Our class is using learned information to create like representations (replicas) of houses/structures from the past as well as creating accurate settings for them.
Success Criteria:
__ I use a variety of media sources to help me to understand and visualize what my replica house/structure will look like.
__ I make a plan to build my house/structure and acquire all necessary materials.
__ I build my structure, focusing on accuracy and detail.
__ I create an accurate physical setting (ie mountains, lakes, deserts, etc.) and place my house/structure within it.
__ BONUS: I add "extras" (eg. people, vehicles for transportation, food, etc.) to my project to help enhance it's overall effectiveness.
