The Nutcracker Ballet is as much a part ofthe holiday season as Christmas carols andChristmas presents. Regardless of where onelives, it’s easy to find a production of thisseasonal favorite. Whether it is performed by aprofessional ballet company or by a localtroupe, whether the music is live or pre-recorded, the essence of the story remains—acharming tale of a young girl and her belovednutcracker.
The heart of the production is the music, and ithas been a holiday treat for me to arrange TheNutcracker Suite for piano duet. Tchaikovskycreated a magical world with his beautifulmelodies and masterful orchestrations. My goalwas to create pianistic and enjoyable duets that
are as true to the orchestral score as possible.Wherever feasible, I gave each pianist anequally important part while staying within anaccessible technical range for this level.
At my annual Christmas performance class,one of the highlights is a section devoted toduets. It is fun to celebrate the holiday seasonwith musical collaboration! I hope that thiscollection will result in many joyful hours ofduet playing and that students will delight inthe wonderful world of Tchaikovsky in TheNutcracker Suite for Two!
