petnology 2012 - colourants with a function - protecting brand integrity
DESCRIPTION
Colourants with a function; protecting brand integrity In today’s competitive marketplace it is essential to protect brand integrity. An increasing number of product categories like dairy products, beer, juices , energy drinks and vitamin-enhanced beverages but also house hold cleaners and dish washing liquids is packaged in PET. This because of PET’s outstanding clarity and favorable properties like shatter resistance. Many of these products however contain color, flavor or nutritional / functional components that require protection from oxygen ingress and the negative effects of sunlight or fluorescent lighting in retail outlets. To maintain product integrity proper care must be taken to prevent the deterioration of these valuable components. Holland Colours has introduced a number of additives in the field of light and oxygen barrier as well as preform production that create synergy when systems are combined for optimal package performance. The growing use of additives in PET at elevated concentrations poses new challenges to the industry because established recycling streams might be affected. As a responsible industry these have to be faced with a pro-active approach. In this presentation we will show which products Holland Colours offers to maximize product protection through optimized container performance. Next to this we will provide an update on the work that has been done on the post-consumer stage of the packaging life cycle. For our barrier materials there are technically feasible and economical options for bottle-to-bottle as well as bottle-to-fibre recycling.TRANSCRIPT

Many colourants and vitamins as present
in food and juices are sensitive to UV-
radiation
Liquid detergents often contain colourants
that are sensitive to UV
Exposure to UV radiation from sunlight
and fluorescent lighting in retail outlets
significantly affects product integrity
UV Protection

Holland Colours has developed a range of cost-
effective UV absorbers in the range from 370 nm
up to 400 nm
The resulting UV-protected PET containers have
excellent clarity and optimal product protection
UV light protection can be combined with any
colour for optimal package design
Additional product protection can be
accomplished by combining UV-absorbance with
oxygen scavengers

Most types of beer are sensitive to UV
radiation and visible light up to 510 nm - the
'Light-struck' effect or ‘Skunked flavor’
This involves the formation of 3-methylbut-2-
ene-1-thiol (3-MBT) out of hops
3-MBT has an extremely low taste threshold
(4 parts-per-trillion) which means that the
smallest amount in beer makes its presence
noticeable

Extended exposure to visible light will initiate photo-oxidation of vitamins B6/B12 and riboflavin (vitamin B2). Very high light protection is required up to 550 nm.

In the case of milk, secondary degradation due to auto-oxidation of lipids (milk fats) results in off-flavours and nutrient losses, especially of vitamins. All this results in a specific “light taste”.
3
Taste & nutrition protection can not be captured by
mathematical formulas or generic data: taste & odor and
analytical tests must be performed in the chosen
package option.
