ROQC TOOLSFOR

* Petrel E&P software platform and Studio E&P knowledge environment is the mark of Schlumberger

It is often difficult to get people to believe the magnitude of the benefits that can be achieved with RoQC Tools – most people do not believe it before they see it demonstrated, or better yet, run the tools themselves on their own data.

The benefits can be split into three main categories:

1. TIME SAVING

2. DECISION RISK REDUCTION

3. MANAGING LARGE DATA SETS

BENEFITS OF ROQC TOOLS

1

1

Page 3: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

RoQC Tools are primarily designed so that data managers can perform tasks that are usually time consuming, in as an efficient manner as possible. Very often this means that they can complete a task in a minute or two, that would usually take months. Sometimes, they can perform tasks that would not be possible without the tools.

Examples:

I)

You can take a stratigraphic column from Openworks, implement it as a stratigraphic chart in Petrel, and initialize the same stratigraphy in Well Tops, all in a matter of sec-onds. “This intellectual property alone is worth hundreds of thousands of USD.” Doing this manually would take several days with a very high risk of introducing errors.

Once you have the well top stratigraphy initialized and the well top data loaded with the correct names, it will automatically be associ-ated with the correct stratigraphy, and incorrect well top names will be collected in the ‘Other’ folder, where they are easy to identify and fix.

Now that you have the stratigraphy charts in Petrel, it takes only a few seconds with RoQC Tools to identify every well top that does not comply with your corporate or asset nomenclature standards – and from here illegal names can be fixed rapidly, or new standards that need to be added to support the business needs can be identified.

2

TIME SAVING

Page 4: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

II)

With RoQC Tools one can easily identify all of the duplicate global well logs (GWL’s) and rapidly merge the duplicates into one version with the correct units and template. You can also identify the quasi duplicate GWL’s (eg GR, GR_fred, GR_final, Gr_OK) and merge these in a con-trolled manner.

III)

With RoQC Seismic Data manager, amongst other functions, you can identify all of the internally realized seismic and export this as external seismic, automatically rebuilding all of the links. One client spent 6 weeks doing this task manually on one Reference project in Petrel. Then, during their initial training course on RoQC Tools, did the remain-ing 15 Reference projects in under 2 hours.

NOTE: The time savings here are all two fold. First the data manager saves time doing the data cleanup. Secondly, all of the users of the data save time because they can find their data in the tidier Petrel input tree and Petrel runs markedly faster with the cleaner data.

“One client spent 6 weeks doing this task manually on one Reference project in Petrel. Then, during their initial mentoring session on RoQC Tools, did the remaining 15 Reference projects in under 2 hours”.

RoQC Tools are specifically aimed at identifying incorrect or suspect data and then rectifying this data.

There is an obvious and well documented correlation be-tween increasing the quality of your data, and reducing the risk on decisions based on that data.

RoQC Audit Report documents the incorrect or suspect data and has links out to applications that can be used to rapidly rectify the erroneous data.

Examples:

I)

An example from 2015 of a well on a Texan unconventional field, where the opera-tor used incorrect elevation data when designing a well, and subsequently drilled a long reach horizontal well ‘too high’. A very expensive failure - not only was the well itself a failure, but it caused the cancelling or redesign of several other Wells.

DECISION RISK REDUCTION

4

Page 6: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

II)

An example from a client that had 7 locations for a well, using RoQC Tools (automatically using the correct CRS transforms) you could see that 3 of these locations placed the well in Iran while the other 4 placed the well in Iraq…

We have a separate white paper on examples of real world data errors and their associated decision risks. See info posted on roqc.com.

Many companies try to manage their Reference Projects/Studio repositories and make no attempt to manage the data in the user projects. One basis for this decision is that it is not possible to manage thousands of Petrel user projects.

With RoQC Tools there is remarkably little overhead in managing thousands of Petrel Pro-jects.

All of the audit reporting/cataloguing can be done automatically. The results can then be browsed in Audit History and Studio Find. The results can be filtered/sliced/grouped so that you can focus on whatever issue you are addressing at the time. The RoQC tools make it very easy to identify duplicate user projects, or projects that have not been up-dated in a long time and that also have poor quality data – candidates to take off line. Or you can identify currently active projects that have high risk and poor quality data. This data can then be targeted for cleanup – data management guided by current business needs.

MANAGING PREVIOUSLY UNMANAGEABLE LARGE DATA ASSEMBLIES

6

Page 8: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

With Audit History you can also see how the user projects are doing over time. In other words, improvement during a cleanup, or deterioration after a cleanup. This way you can determine which asset is, or is not, managing its data.

7

As an example, the figure shows the status of multiple Petrel Projects. Initial audit made in DARK GREEN, and the last audit in LIGHT GREEN.

Page 9: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

The ability to Monitor and Audit your project data in-creases quality awareness and trust. RoQC Tools give you KPI’s automatically that enable quality as-sured decision making and direct reporting to man-agement. This drives more rapid and accurate deci-sions in Data Management, resulting in enhanced data quality for the Geoscientist.

PERFORMANCE

Page 10: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

RoQC Tools for Petrel and Studio are fully integrated and the Data Manager can access all functions directly from the Data Management perspective in Petrel, as shown in the im-age above.

RoQC Tools provide a fast and easy overview of the Petrel project environment. A unique solution that, for the first time, enables you to detect problems with your data and fix them, all integrated within Petrel.

TOOLS TO GET THE JOB DONE

9

Page 11: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

The RoQC Audit Report identifies erroneous or missing metadata in the Petrel Projects and, on that basis, the following cleanup op-erations will/can be performed:

• Illegal Surfaces

• Well Logs below Total Depth

• Wells with suspect KB

• Wells with suspect Total Depth

• Wells missing UWI

• Global Well Log duplicates

• Picks without observation numbers

• Picks without interpreter

• Missing 2D Seismic

• Internally realized 2D Seismic

• Missing 3D Seismic

• Internally realized 3D Seismic

• Reparenting of 2D Seismic Lines

• Identify and remove duplicate Seismic Cubes & Seismic files

• Identify and remove duplicate Interpretations (Horizons) and merge Horizons

APPROACH FOR PETREL PROJECTS

RoQC Audit Report lists not only errors and potential errors, but also things that may be useful in checking the quality of the data. If "Statis-tics" is selected, Audit Report also generates two types of metrics - one for Data Quality and the other quantifying Data Completeness. There are direct links from many of the issues highlighted by Audit Report to the modules that will allow you to fix the problem.

Audit Report is used for running the indexer and it will add RoQC Data Quality attributes to the indexes – which can be seen and manipulated in the Search filter interface.

As an example, the figure above shows the status of the initial audit of a Petrel Reference Project.

11

RoQC Audit Report

Page 13: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

The Audit History tool provides a simple mechanism for displaying the data quality of many projects – for example before and after a data cleanup.

The Petrel project(s) and the “Before” and “After” dates are chosen by the user. The program will then automatically generate a spider chart for each of the selected projects.

As an example, the above figure shows the status of multiple Petrel Pro-jects. Initial audit made in BLUE, and the last audit in GREEN.

If you right click on a project spider chart it will allow you to launch Petrel with the selected project loaded.

With Audit History you can see how the user projects are doing over time. In other words, improvement during a cleanup, or deterioration after a cleanup. This way you can determine which asset is or is not managing its data.

12

RoQC Audit History

Page 14: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

Audit Report and Audit History are ‘query only’ tools and will not make any changes to Petrel data. The other RoQC Tools are data management tools that directly change native Petrel data.

Depending on what the user chooses to do, the tools may ma-nipulate the following domain objects:

• Borehole

• Global Well Logs

• Well Logs

• Well Tops

• Stratigraphic Charts/Columns

• Check-shots

• Seismic 2D and 3D collections (does not change the data but moves the objects to a new location, internalize/externalize and reparenting of 2D Seismic lines)

• Find/Indexer

DATA MANIPULATION - PETREL

CRUDCREATE-READ-UPDATE-DELETE

Page 15: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

Well Log Manager

Well Log Manager is used to manage logs – for example to consolidate duplicate GWL’s into one

version. You chose which version you want to keep and ‘move’ all of the logs attached to the other ver-

sions to the version you want to keep. The unwanted GWL framework will then be removed. With Well Log Manager you can manage any GWLs - not just duplicates.

The Fix Well Logs tab is used to identify logs which have duplicate or decreasing depths. Logs with duplicate depths can be fixed (the val-ues at the same depth are averaged) or deleted.

Fix Missing Interpreters

Fix Missing Interpreters is used to assign inter-preters to Well Tops that currently have no inter-

preter. This situa-tion arose with older versions of Petrel and could

create prob-lems when transferring the Well Tops to Studio or to other sys-

tems.

Browse and view to fix other Well related attrib-utes.

Fix Well Headers

Fix Well Headers is used to assign UWI’s/Operators/spud dates to Wells that are currently missing a UWI/Operators/spud date. A missing UWI is not criti-cal for a single Petrel project, but it is critical if the Wells will be used in Studio, more than one Petrel project or in other systems (UWI is mandatory in most systems). Fix Well Headers can also be used to assign operators or spud dates to Wells. All of the input can be made ei-ther by direct input or from a *.csv file. There is complete control over whether the data is al-ready in Petrel, overwritten or not.

Fix Observation Numbers

Fix Observation Numbers is used to assign ob-servation numbers to Well Tops that are missing an observation number or have an incorrect (out of se-quence) observa-tion number – these must be fixed before the data is transferred to Studio, or other systems.

OW Stratigraphy Converter

OW Stratigraphy Converter converts an Open-Works stratigraphic column in *.sce format into the *.xml format that Petrel reads data, color codes and optionally loads it to Petrel as a Stra-tigraphic Chart. Logic checks are run on the data before loading it and bad data is flagged.

14

Page 16: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

The Stratigraphic data can be edited before it is loaded.

Stratigraphy Cleanup

Strat Cleanup lists all of the ‘Illegal’ surface names in the Petrel project and lets you rename them to ‘Legal’ surface names. A ‘legal’ surface

name is one that is defined in one or more of the Stratigraphic Col-umns that are de-fined in the Petrel project.

CheckShots Manager

The CheckShots Manager allows you to add missing records to the CheckShots – one at SRD (Seismic Reference Datum) and one at seabed. You can also find all of the CheckShots that ap-pear to be in OWT and fix these to TWT. Wells missing CheckShots and those where Check-Shots and TRDs are not set as active can be found and fixed. If the data sampling is too dense i.e. data sample count you can quickly perform a decimation.

15

Page 17: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

Seismic Data Manager

Seismic Data Manager is used to manage:

• seismic and associated data from internally realized to externally realized whilst holding integrity of headers, colour tables, annotations and all other associated meta data.

• re-parenting of 2D lines that are in an incorrect survey and move (drag and drop) them to the correct survey. Relinks everything in Petrel (inc meta data) and simultaneously move the physical trace data on disk to the new location. The user has full control over where the trace data will be stored. The re-parenting supports both internal and external real-ized seismic.

• duplicate seismic cubes and seismic files in a project.

• duplicate seismic files globally (Pro-ject folders or index selection).

• seismic file relationship to multiple pro-jects.

• seismic files not linked to any project.

16

Page 18: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

Interpretation Data Manager

Interpretation Data Manager is used to quickly:

• identify and remove duplicate interpretations (horizons).

• locate surveys in an interpretation collection that belong to the same horizon but are not merged.

• merge horizons

• identify grids with no associated attributes

• identify horizons with no associated grids

SYNCHRONIZING STUDIO DELETIONS

RoQC Deletion Manager

is a tool that provides a mechanism for synchronizing deletions that have been made in Studio into the open Petrel project. Deletions that are applicable to the open Petrel project are automatically listed and the user can select which data to delete. It is recommended that deletions are synchronized every time before run-ning the Studio Transfer Tool.

The RoQC Studio Attribute Manager lets you manage user and system at-tributes.

With the Attribute Manager you can:

• Browse and Filter Attributes and their values

• Standardize and distribute Attrib-utes from a Reference repository to other repositories

• Synchronize or Update Attributes to enforce standards from the Refer-ence repository

• Delete Attributes that have no asso-ciated values

• Merge Attribute values from several “Attributes” to a common (standard) attribute Global Unique ID “GUID”

• Filter GUID’s

• Clean empty instances of string At-tributes

The Attribute Manager becomes a Generic Manager for all data types that have generated property Names/Attributes/Strings in Petrel published to Studio.

The RoQC Studio Deletion Manager provides a mechanism for synchronizing data that have been deleted in Studio into mul-tiple Petrel projects.

The information about deletions made in Studio are used to propagate the changes down to the Petrel projects containing the relevant data. The RoQC Studio Deletion Manager lets the user select one or multiple indexes or multiple Petrel projects located in directories on a selected file system.

This selection is then used in the synchronization of all deletions made in Studio.

After the deletions are executed the user will have full overview of the dele-tions and a log is created showing all details about the data objects de-leted.

22

RoQC Studio Deletion Manager

Page 24: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

The RoQC Studio Seismic Data Manager is used to manage:

• moving seismic files from one location to a new loca-tion ensuring that the storage location is intact and updated in the Studio repository.

• re-parenting of 2D lines that are in an incorrect sur-vey and move (drag and drop) them to the correct survey. Relinks everything in the repository and si-multaneously moves the physical trace data on disk to the new location. The user has full control over where the trace data will be stored.

• duplicate seismic cubes and seismic files in a Stu-dio repository

• seismic files not linked to a repository

• cube/survey compatibility

If Schlumberger’s Studio Indexer is installed and running then RoQC Audit Report can extend the 24

RoQC Studio Strat Cleanup

The RoQC Studio Strat Cleanup lists all of the ‘Illegal’ surface names in the selected Studio Reposi-tory and lets you rename them to ‘Legal’ surface names. A ‘legal’ surface name is one that is defined in one or more of the Stratigraphic Columns. The Stratigraphic Columns are defined in one or multiple set of .SCE format files. The .SCE ascii format contains a structured way of presenting stratigraphy in-formation and is very easy to create and edit. See image below.

Page 26: Petrel E&P Softwa Studio E&P Knowl

Schlumberger Studio Find/Indexer attribute model to include several new RoQC Quality sections; QC Trafficlight, QC Message, Project Size, Project last updated and many more. These are then populated with the results of the Audit Report.

Below each RoQC Quality section RoQC filters are displayed in the Search filter, you can filter and look at the results of the Audit Report – displaying the data in different windows like: 2D, 3D, Histogram, Well Section, etc.

The close integration with Find and Indexer gives you ability to see all of the audit results from all of the projects that have been indexed (i.e. indexes from across different projects). This gives a tremendous overview of identified data quality issues for your whole Petrel and Studio environment.

“..a game changer for controlling your Petrel/Studio environment”.
