Good evening , my name is Abe Chorbajian and Alek and I would like to introduce our Jurors who took time from their busy schedule to participate in reviewing our 2010 design Awards
Vaughan is an architect and urban designer with AECOM. Vaughanhas produced dynamic urban plans for urban waterfronts, retail/sports and entertainment destinations, transit centers and mixed use environments with an emphasis on creating pedestrianmixed-use environments with an emphasis on creating pedestrian urban neighborhoods in cities large and small, nationwide and abroad. Vaughan receivd his Barch from the University of Cape town his masters in Urban Design Columbia Univ. in NY
Dennis McFadden is design principle with CO Architects in Los Angeles. His work of the last twenty years has been focused primarily on the master planning and design of institutional projects,
fincluding academic, research and health care facilities. His work has received numerous awards, including a national AIA honor award for Bourns Hall-College of Engineering at UC Riverside. A graduate of the University of Southern California with a master’s degree from Princeton University. Dennis has taught at USC and has served as aPrinceton University. Dennis has taught at USC and has served as a visiting critic at UCLA, Southern California Institute of Architecture, and CalPoly Pomona. His work has been published in Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture and I’Arca. Dennis was made a fellow of the AIA in 2008.

Mr. Palacios a Principal with AECOM, José oversees the design of projects for the firm’s architecture studio. Originally from Ecuador, Mr. Palacios’ interests and studies varied from physics and mathematics to philosophy and architecture. He spent nearly ninemathematics to philosophy and architecture. He spent nearly nine years in academia in various institutions in South America, Europe and eventually the United States where he graduated with honors, earning both a Bachelors and Masters of Architecture from Texas A&M University
For most of his career, Mehrdad Yazdani has practiced at the intersection of the large office and a small studio. Named by Progressive Architecture magazine as one the world’s top emerging architects just three years after earning his Masters of Architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design in 1990 Mehrdad hasfrom Harvard s Graduate School of Design in 1990, Mehrdad has succeeded in bringing a design sensibility characteristic of boutique firms to a broad portfolio of significant civic buildings. Today, as a principal of Cannon Design’s national practice and Design Director of the west coast-based Yazdani Studio, Mehrdad is a respected member

Our jurors comments were:Our jurors comments were:•A tough problem elegantly resolved•This project gives an ungainly, rootless office building a strong, fresh presence at a scale more appropriate to its freeway frontage location. The new glass skin, layered massing and use of color and graphics completely transforms the proportions and character of the building in a way that is direct and without artifice.

Our jurors comments were:•A simple and clean solution with the right touch in the right places•A well organized plan inserted into a very modest shell ; the translucentA well organized plan inserted into a very modest shell ; the translucentskin and new window walls greatly improve the interior environment whilgiving the building a welcoming lightness from the exterior during the daand a glowing presence at night. In this project, also, there is an admiradirectness to the resolution.

Our jurors comments were:Our jurors comments were:•A clever use of color applied with rigor and creativity gives a very ordered solution a lively feel of lightness and simplicity.•The incision of a relatively modest courtyard into the deep floor plate has an enormous impact on way-finding and the quality of the interior space. The use of color and the various framing and portal elements further breaks down the expanse into neighborhoods. It looks like a good place to work.
