    Research at the School of Economics

    Our research can be divided into fourareas: microeconomics; macroeconomics;applied economics and economic theory;and labour and health economics.

    Our micro theory group is one of the

    strongest in Europe, and we can offersupervision and support across a rangeof subject specialisms, including politicaleconomy, monetary theory, laboureconomics (both theoretical andempirical), industrial organisation, realbusiness cycles, econometrics and theoryand intergenerational economics. Ournewly established experimental laboratoryalso allows us to combine experiments inthe laboratory with randomised eldexperiments. This in turn will fostercollaboration between economic theoristsand applied economists and will serve as aplatform for interaction with policymakersand eld practitioners.

    Leading experts in theeld of economics

    Economic TheoryProfessor John Moore, holder of the GeorgeWatsons and Daniel Stewarts Chair ofPolitical Economy, is a Fellow of the BritishAcademy, the Econometric Society, theEuropean Economic Association and theRoyal Society of Edinburgh. He is also aForeign Honorary Member of the American

    Academy of Arts and Sciences and theAmerican Economic Association. In 2010he and his collaborator Nobuhiro Kiyotakiwon the Stephen A Ross Prize in FinancialEconomics for their paper Credit Cycles.He currently holds a European ResearchCouncil ve-year Advanced Grant. His maininterests are economic theory, nature ofcontracts, money, liquidity and theaggregate economy.

    Professor Ed Hopkins research is ingame theory, social economics andevolutionary game theory. Recently, hehas collaborated with Dr Tatiana Kornienkoon social economics, with a particularfocus on the importance of rank, statusand relative position.

    We have an impressive history of high rankings for our postgraduateresearch. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, 25 per

    cent of our research was judged world-leading in its originality,signi cance and rigour, while a further 45 per cent was judgedinternationally excellent. Several faculty members have recentlyreceived prestigious awards and major grants to fund research.

    Dr Kohei Kawamuras research centres ongame theoretic analysis of communication,the theory of the rm, communicationenvironments, truth telling, andcorporate governance.

    Professor Philipp Kircher is Managing Editorof the Review of Economic Studies , andholder of a ve-year ERC Starting Grant.His research interests are microeconomictheory, macroeconomics, labour, andresource allocation in markets withsearch frictions.

    Professor Jonathan Thomas is a Fellow ofboth the Econometric Society and the BritishAcademy. His research interests includegame theory, contract theory and laboureconomics. He has recently been workingon the macroeconomic implications ofequal treatment in labour markets.

    Professor Jzsef Skovics, our REF (ResearchExcellence Framework) Coordinator anda Director of SIRE BIC, is a theoreticalmicro-economist with research interestsin consumer behaviour, game theory andprice formation in decentralised markets.He has published widely, including in theAmerican Economic Review, Econometricaand the Journal of Political Economy.

    Dr Tim Worralls research interests include

    contract theory, risk and uncertainty,network design, and game theory.

    MacroeconomicsProfessor Mike Elsby won the 2011Philip Leverhulme Prize for economics.His research focuses on the interfacebetween macroeconomics and laboureconomics, in particular on unemploymentand wage determination.

    Dr Jan Grobovek is the winner of theEuropean Economic Associations FEEM 2011Award for the three best papers by a youngeconomist. His research interests includemacroeconomics and economic growth.

    Dr Richard Holts interests include dynamicdecision problems, unemployment andthe macroeconomic consequences oflabour market friction.

    Professor Jos Rodrguez Mora is aResearch Af liate of the Centre forEconomic Policy Research, CESifo and theInstitute for the Study of Labour (IZA). Hisresearch is centred on the allocation ofhuman resources and political economy.

    Our Professor of Economics Education (andExecutive Director of SIRE) is Stuart Sayer, arecent winner of the UK-wide OutstandingTeaching Award for Economics from theHigher Education Academy. His primaryresearch interests are macroeconomic andmonetary theory and policy, and economicpolicymaking and the economics of Keynes.

    Professor Andy Snells research interestsinclude applied econometrics,econometric theory and applied

    nance macroeconomics.

    Applied economics (labour,health and education)Professor Michle Belots main areasof research revolve around labour andbehavioural economics. Her work coversa range of research themes includingeducation and health; labour marketinstitutions; methodology; migration;social preferences and social ties. She plansto use the new laboratory to test policyinterventions with eld experiments.

    Dr Aniko Birs main areas of researchinvolve health economics, appliedeconometrics, labour and demographiceconomics, and the economics of ageing.

    Dr Steven Dieterles areas of researchcover labour economics, economics ofeducation and applied econometrics.

    Professor Maia Gell is a Research Af liateof the Centre for Economic Policy Research,the Centre for Economic Performance atLondon School of Economics and IZA. Herresearch interests are in theoretical andempirical labour economics.

    EconomicsPhD 3 yrs FT (6 yrs PT available for UK/EU students)

    Our PhD programme enables you to pursue your academicinterests, and learn the latest methods in research, while providingyou with thorough training in modern economics. We typicallyadmit around 10 new PhD students each year. All our PhD studentsare fully supervised and supported throughout their studies.

    All of our PhD students are supervised by two faculty membersin the School, typically a senior and junior member of staff. ThePhD programme is principally a research degree, but moderneconomics requires substantial training that exceeds the level

    of an MSc or other masters study.Our PhD programme follows an innovative structure, offeringa rich and varied menu of options. The programme is structuredas follows:

    YEAR 1

    Coursework: microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics,applied econometrics and two options from the advancedcourses in the MSc or courses from the Royal Statistical Society

    Introductory lectures by faculty members on specialised topics

    First year research paper ( rst chapter of thesis)

    Evaluation at the end of year 1 (determining whether the

    student can progress to Year 2)

    Development of thesis.

    Completion of thesis and preparation for the job market.

    During term-time PhD students participate once a week in agraduate seminar. Here you will either discuss important works inyour eld or present your own research. The weekly seminar alsohelps your presentation technique and professional development.Through our participation in the Scottish Graduate Programme inEconomics (SGPE), there are many additional advanced trainingopportunities open to our PhD students.

    Career opportunitiesWhile many of our PhD graduates choose to remain in academiaas lecturers and researchers, some pursue careers in other sectors.Recent PhD graduates have found employment as researchersand analysts with the World Bank, the Bank of England and theEconomist, as well as other private and public organisations.

    Entry requirementsYou are normally required to have an MSc in economics withhigh marks (Distinction/A- or better) before starting your PhD.Most of our PhD students begin by taking the SGPE MSc herein Edinburgh, but we welcome applications for direct entry intothe PhD programme from those who have a masters degree ineconomics with high marks from an internationally recognisedand well-ranked university.

    If you do not have an MSc, or you have an MSc in another subject,

    such as business or nance, you will not normally be admitteddirectly to the PhD programme.

    We expect you to submit a research proposal in an area wherewe have research strengths. (See page 7 for research detailsand page 10, How to apply.)

    SupportOur links with SGPE allow for additional supervision by teachingstaff from one of the seven other participating universities. All ourPhD students bene t from a two-day residential weekend whereyou present and discuss your work with SGPE staff and students.

    FundingFull funding is usually available for highly quali ed PhD students.

    We expect you to apply for funding and we would encourageyou to consider all opportunities available. In the event thatyou receive an offer but have been unable to secure funding,then we will seek to nd funding on your behalf.
