The year gone by has been one full of

challenges, a true test of the survival of the

fittest in many ways. It became more than

evident that innovation, active execution,

bottom of the pyramid, value creation and high engagement quotient will be the mainstay of business school

education and businesses.

Welingkar Education has leveraged the challenges in the last two years to train and sharpen the mind and soul of all

its management graduates towards creating meaning in the time they have chosen to invest.

We nourished minds with several interesting courses, subjects and verticals. One of the courses was the Integrative

Manager – a completely immersive experience wherein the case study approach was combined with the design

thinking approach to develop decision making abilities in a business situation. The process basically brought out the

wonderful characters of leaders, analysts, thinkers, doers, innovators within each participant.

We nourished souls through courses such as wisdom practices and connecting with people on the fringes of society.

And to bring meaning out of the learning, we engaged students all through their Welingkar experience in projects.

Projects such as ‘sustainable solutions for energy – an ethnographic study’ in rural India, then extended to studying

patterns related to the retail, telecom, finance and so many other facets of real life experiences and usages throwing

up insights across different business sectors that if researched and studied have great potential. And true to our

philosophy of ‘We Share’ we extended this knowledge to students, corporates, and faculty across the globe who

engaged with us through various lecture, Round table Seminars, Workshops.

In the brochure ahead we have unfolded several initiatives, experiences, accomplishments. Through these we intend

sharing what the WeSchool Environment is about. I invite you to explore this World of Welingkar, both Mumbai and

Bengaluru, to sense the experience you could expect as a student at Welingkar.

Today, markets change at a pace that makes even Moore’s law seems archaic. With advances in the fields of

communication, material sciences, genetics: nothing seems impossible.

How does a Business manager adapt in such times? Design thinking with its adaptive and integrative approach,

seems to provide the way forward. A designer converts imagination into reality with her/ his unique abilities of seeing

co-relations across diverse domains, intuitive skills of unbiased observations, a highly user centric approach, a

tendency towards quick prototyping. A merger of the intuitive approach of a designer and the analytical approach of

a Business manager has given birth to the term ‘Business design’.

Alumni are the face of college in the industry. They are a very important asset for any college. We at Welingkar nurture

this thought. We have maintained a constant association with our Alumni. In an effort in this direction, the Alumni

council of Welingkar with the help of the faculty organised the Alumni Meet 2010 at both the campuses. The main

motto of the event was to help the alumni to refresh their memories associated with college, reconnect with the

college and have fun as well. It was for this reason the event had a casual feel attached to it. The Alumni Meet proved

to be a rewarding and enjoyable gathering for the alumni and a proud and gratifying experience for Welingkar.

Alumni Meet

Alumni Meet - Mumbai Alumni Meet - Bengaluru

Dubai Fellowship MeetDubai – the Pearl of the Persian Gulf requires no special introduction. Today, Dubai is said to be among the most

dynamic and diversified economies and is distinguished as the most modern and cosmopolitan environments in the

Emirates. There are over 50 Welingkar alumni based in and around the city and spread across the industry in the

Middle-East holding key positions with top notch jobs in organizations. It was indeed a mammoth task to bring

together so many alumni from various batches and backgrounds together, at the Welingkar Alumni Meet, held in

Dubai. Many alumni were happy to be associated with their alma mater by means of offering internships and

employment opportunities to our students in the Gulf, offering research assignments, training expertise and other

forms of support, where there is a possibility to collaborate. Promises were made to be in contact and form a support

network which Welingkar has always been so proud of!

Industry Round Tables

Alumni Round Tables

We understand that today it is very essential to create employable people and that is why we wish to facilitate a

dialogue with the corporate world to know better what is expected from B-Schools today. Towards achieving this

goal, Welingkar taken some decisive strides to look beyond the obvious. One such initiative being “Confluence: A

Constructive Collision Of The Greatest Business Minds - a series of Industry Roundtables”.

To engage in 'immersive techniques' and interact with 'people in the thick of action' is integral to the learning

methods at Welingkar. Last year Welingkar organised Round Tables across 12 industry verticals. Through these

Round Tables Welingkar brought together over 600 industry professionals, who shared real-time challenges and

some of these are live projects that students are working on now at Welingkar.

Welingkar also holds Round Tables for its Alumni at both the Mumbai & Bengaluru campuses. These Round Tables

allow the alumni to discuss their experiences after their Welingkar education. Welingkar also learnt about what

changes or improvements could be made to suit the changing environment in the sectors discussed. It grew to

become a great success with the presence of some of the young and esteemed alumni who gave various insights

and practical knowledge. The Alumni Round Tables proved to be an overall learning experience for not only the

students but also the management and the visiting alumni. Students also had an opportunity to have an enriching

interaction with Welingkar’s esteemed alumni Mr. Ridham Desai, Managing Director & Head of Research - Morgan

Stanley India. Mr. Ridham Desai's address to the students was primarily on the Global Financial Melt Down, reasons

for the same and the road ahead towards recovery. Mr. Desai addressed students' questions which further helped

the forum to develop a perspective on the global financial markets.

agency, Risk Management Solutions (RMS) has

provided scientifically-based models and technology to

help the insurance industry quantify catastrophe risk for over two decades. Its products and services are primarily

used for managing risk in developed regions of the world where insurance penetration is high. RMS understands that

quantification of risk is essential but not enough in order to provide insurance protection to the Bottom of Pyramid

(BOP) populations. RMS’s agenda has been to bring together interested but isolated stakeholders on both the

supply as well as demand side hand in hand, aimed at effective implementation of ideas in this space. RMS in

association with the Welingkar Institute of Management, Bengaluru is conducting a research study on the

outstanding portfolio of the microcredit industry in Andhra Pradesh.

Students at Welingkar are encouraged to keep the

‘curious’ alive all through their tenure. The Welingkar

Research Center, equipped with research resources -

reports, databases, software and most importantly

highly demanding and equally encouraging faculty,

make sure there is enough hunger for research.

One of the proud moments when ‘research met

reward’ is enumerated below.

A technology consultant with 2.5 years of experience

in an IT firm entered Welingkar. Fascinated with the

resources at the research center; he participated in

various research competitions with a great vigour. His

thirst for knowledge transcended all constraints.

Result: 21 awards across the country, 11 national

awards for one single business plan.

The Welingkar Research Center (WRC) is an initiative

undertaken by the Welingkar Institute as part of its

commitment to corporates and its student community.

Our research findings are disseminated directly through

publications, conferences or seminars and indirectly

through case studies and course development for

MBA, PhD and Executive Education Programs.

We Stories - Research Mindset

The Intrapreneurial / Entrepreneurial bug is nurtured and

encouraged at Welingkar. Welingkar not only

encourages students to test their ideas at a micro level,

but also provides adequate guidance and infrastructure

to help their dreams come true. In Mumbai, an

enterprising group of four students identified a lack of

initiatives towards grooming of students in various

institutes across India, especially in Tier II cities. They

decided to explore the need-gap further and came out

with a b-plan which benefited the students as well. They

are successfully running their proposed training

program in 2 colleges from Nasik where modules on

personal interviews, group discussions, effective

communication skills and presentations are being imparted. They travel every weekend to Nasik to train these

students. Similarly, Prof. Madhavi Lokhande, faculty at Welingkar, Bengaluru, is committed to help women in a low

income slum in Bengaluru who have home-run businesses get bank loans to ensure that the money is managed well

and they successfully grow their ventures. Madhavi has helped 13 women get bank loans and worked with 12 others

with their business models. A participant of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Program – Tools for Growing Your

Business, organized in association with the National Entrepreneurship Network, Madhavi is inspired to put her

learning into practice with grassroot entrepreneurs.

Welingkar in association with Nina Foundation launched a 'healthy' trend with the Wellness Seminar series headed

by Dr. Ms. Ketna L Mehta, (editor & Associate Dean, Research), who has completed her PhD in Healthcare

Management from SNDT University, Mumbai, of which Welingkar is an extension centre . The Wellness Seminar is a

unique initiative empowering the community through the power of information. Nina Foundation is an NGO

established for the holistic well being and rehabilitation of people with spinal injuries in India. To bridge the gap of lack

of world class rehabilitation services, 6 wellness seminars were conducted through 2009 & 2010 targeted at people

with spinal injury and the community at large. Welingkar campus being one the very few B-Schools in the country

being wheelchair accessible welcomed the participants in a barrier free environment. The audience comprised of

extraordinary achievers with spinal injury as well as the who's who of the healthcare, media, education and the

corporate world. Once again this collaborative initiative emphasized that each human has great potential and can

Prarambh - BengaluruAt Welingkar our life revolves around discovering, researching, erring & succeeding. Students toil with ideas in an

effort to germinate them from seeds to sprouts and from sprouts to trees; trees that grow big and strong and yet have

their roots deep and firm in the soil. This thought has given birth to Prarambh, the E-Cell at Welingkar, Bengaluru.

Our students believe, ‘We think not of ourselves as scientists trying to incubate, but rather as naturalists who try to

cultivate. We believe that Entrepreneurship is a spirit and it can be inculcated in every individual irrespective of the

choice of career or work. We endeavor to create an environment conducive to experiential learning.’

This matches our approach of ‘design thinking’ in the field of management education. It provides students a great

scope for Innovation, which in turn provides the ideal launch pad for their entrepreneurial ventures. This ideology is

reflected in the very design of the campus at Bangalore, where every classroom has the eco-system of an innovation

lab. The eco-system includes aspects like completely flexible seating, allowing for the classroom to extend beyond

the four walls. In addition regular visits and interactions with business leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and

designers help to provide the students with the required direction to their limitless thought process.

Once again this collaborative initiative emphasized that each human has great potential and can

have a positive impact on the society, enabling them to take flight again.

Welingkar joint research on “Strategies on Alternate

Energy based Business ecosystems in rural India” with

Stanford Design for Change Center.

This research was aimed to understand the economic

& social needs and technical opportunities in Rural

India and generate innovative & integrated strategies

for Alternate Energy based Business ecosystems in

villages.

The study was conducted in 2 phases by the students

themselves. They visited villages located in

Maharashtra and Rajasthan in the month of June and July. Phase 1 involved using ethnographic research

methodology to observe the energy interventions in the daily life of people. Phase 2 is an ongoing study which

involves analysis of all the observations made in Phase 1.

Brand Valuation – Students in Action A team of Welingkar students earned an opportunity to work with Brand

Finance, which has carved a niche for itself as an international Brand Valuation major. They were part of the core team

responsible for evaluating 'India's Most Valuable Brands-2009’ in collaboration with The Economic Times. This is a

part of the Institute’s conscious effort to map future trends and encourage students in defining them.

Students at Welingkar are encouraged to keep the

‘curious’ alive all through their tenure. The Welingkar

Research Center, equipped with research resources -

reports, databases, software and most importantly

highly demanding and equally encouraging faculty,

make sure there is enough hunger for research.

One of the proud moments when ‘research met

reward’ is enumerated below.

A technology consultant with 2.5 years of experience

in an IT firm entered Welingkar. Fascinated with the

resources at the research center; he participated in

various research competitions with a great vigour. His

thirst for knowledge transcended all constraints.

Result: 21 awards across the country, 11 national

awards for one single business plan.

The Welingkar Research Center (WRC) is an initiative

undertaken by the Welingkar Institute as part of its

commitment to corporates and its student community.

Our research findings are disseminated directly through

publications, conferences or seminars and indirectly

through case studies and course development for

MBA, PhD and Executive Education Programs.

We Stories - Research Mindset

The Intrapreneurial / Entrepreneurial bug is nurtured and

encouraged at Welingkar. Welingkar not only

encourages students to test their ideas at a micro level,

but also provides adequate guidance and infrastructure

to help their dreams come true. In Mumbai, an

enterprising group of four students identified a lack of

initiatives towards grooming of students in various

institutes across India, especially in Tier II cities. They

decided to explore the need-gap further and came out

with a b-plan which benefited the students as well. They

are successfully running their proposed training

program in 2 colleges from Nasik where modules on

personal interviews, group discussions, effective

communication skills and presentations are being imparted. They travel every weekend to Nasik to train these

students. Similarly, Prof. Madhavi Lokhande, faculty at Welingkar, Bengaluru, is committed to help women in a low

income slum in Bengaluru who have home-run businesses get bank loans to ensure that the money is managed well

and they successfully grow their ventures. Madhavi has helped 13 women get bank loans and worked with 12 others

with their business models. A participant of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Program – Tools for Growing Your

Business, organized in association with the National Entrepreneurship Network, Madhavi is inspired to put her

learning into practice with grassroot entrepreneurs.

interactions with the corporate world for students.

This July, the Prime Services Division, Credit Suisse,

analyst report on 'US Markets' prepared by an intern

from Welingkar, Mumbai. His efforts were recognized

and commended by the Director, Prime Services, US.

As the world’s leading catastrophe risk modeling

agency, Risk Management Solutions (RMS) has

provided scientifically-based models and technology to

help the insurance industry quantify catastrophe risk for over two decades.
