Students can use more than 1,200 computers
in suites distributed across the University’s sites,
and many are accessible by swipe card 24
hours a day. In addition, if you are a research
student you will have your own desk with
desktop computer.
Software supportThe School of Mathematics provides all
postgraduates with access to software
packages such as Maple, Matlab and
Mathematica. Research students are allocated
parallel computing time on ‘Eddie’ – the Edinburgh Compute and Data Facility. It is also possible to arrange use of the BlueGene/Q
supercomputer facility if your research requires it.

Facilities and resources
We have an outstanding reputation for
teaching and research. We were judged
‘excellent’ in the most recent Teaching
Quality Assessment and, in the 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise, we were ranked among
the top five in the UK by volume of research
activity in the highest categories (4* and 3*).
Rich heritageThe School also boasts a rich heritage in
pioneering mathematics. Our base, the James
Clerk Maxwell Building, is named after one of
the most celebrated mathematicians to study
and teach at the University. The 19th-century
scientist is most famous for developing classical
electromagnetic theory. Nobel Prize winning
physicist Max Born was Tait Professor of
Mathematical Physics here, from 1936 to 1953.
Leaders in their fieldsOur status as one of the most prestigious
schools in the UK for mathematics attracts
highly respected staff. Among the 50 current
academic staff of the School of Mathematics
many are leaders in their fields and regularly
recognised with international awards.
The School is home to three Fellows of the
Royal Society, eight Fellows of the Royal Society
of Edinburgh and seven Leverhulme Prize or
Fellowship holders. Abel Prize winner and Fields
medallist Sir Michael Atiyah is an Honorary
Professor, and Professor Agata Smoktunowicz,
of the Algebra and Number Theory Group, is a
recent recipient of the European Mathematical
Society Prize.

CommunityWe are a vibrant community of about 50 staff supervising 60 students, and while you will be immersed in academic discourse at the highest level, we also offer plenty of opportunities to have fun, through a full calendar of social events.
Mathematics need never be a solitary
discipline, when there is the daily bustle of the
common room, subject-specific clubs, the
weekly postgraduate colloquium – where
students give talks and share cake – and many
annual events including a residential excursion
to Firbush Point on the banks of Loch Tay in the
Highlands, where everything from cycling to
canoeing is on offer.
Graduate SchoolFor research students our Graduate School
offers a busy schedule of activities ranging
from formal seminars to social events. The
Graduate School runs its own website and
YouTube channel, which features
self-produced videos of lectures.
Share your work with the worldResearchers are encouraged to travel and
participate in conferences and seminars. You’ll

Learn to teachPhD students are given leadership roles within
the School, and you’ll be expected to spend
some of your time conducting undergraduate
tutorials. And we will help you: the University
offers courses in public speaking and other
teaching skills, and you’ll be able to draw on
the support of your peers and supervisors in
research group meetings.
A solid startFor research students, a strong foundation in
the fundamentals of your chosen field is
essential and in the early part of your studies
you will be offered taught courses through
the Scottish Mathematical Sciences Training
Centre, a consortium of seven mathematics

Programme descriptionThis masters is run jointly with Heriot-Watt University. It provides you with expertise in financial mathematics, including stochastic calculus, and a range of practical techniques for analysing financial markets. You will also learn quantitative skills for developing and managing risk that are in high demand since the recent financial crisis.
Adding depth to your learning, our work placement programme puts you at the heart of organisations such as Aberdeen Asset Management, Barrie & Hibbert and Lloyds Banking Group.

Programme descriptionThis programme gives you a flexible syllabus to suit the demands of employers that use modern financial tools and optimization techniques, in areas such as the financial sector and energy markets.
We will give you sound knowledge in financial derivative pricing, portfolio optimization and financial risk management. Programme descriptionThis programme is the ideal preparation for a career that involves the use of advanced mathematics or for a doctoral degree in mathematics. We will introduce you to abstract thinking and logical analysis and develop your skills in advanced techniques in pure and applied mathematics.
You will study key areas including analysis, algebra, geometry, probability theory, statistics, partial differential equations and numerical methods. We will also develop your project management and communication skills.
Programme structureThis programme consists of two taught semesters of courses followed by your dissertation project. You have a wide range of options, including courses from the Scottish Mathematical Sciences Training Centre, which selects teaching staff from various Scottish universities. Some of these are taught by video conference.
Career opportunitiesThis is the ideal programme if you wish to pursue an academic career.

Our intensive programme allows you to specialise in an area that best suits your career goals. You can choose operational research, operational research with risk, or operational research with computational optimization.

Programme descriptionThis programme starts by developing your expertise in design, implementation and mathematical analysis of numerical algorithms for ordinary and partial differential equations, linear algebra, and convex and non-convex optimization. This theory is backed up with training in advanced computing languages, such as CUDA, and experience with the latest high performance computing hardware, including GPUs and cloud computing. You’ll also benefit from unrivalled parallel computing facilities.
You will use the theory and software to analyse molecular dynamics, social networks, atmospheric and oceanographic waves and astronomical many-body interactions so you can carry out your own analysis for the scientific developments of tomorrow.
Programme structureThis programme comprises two semesters of core and optional courses followed by your dissertation project.
Compulsory courses: Numerical Ordinary Differential Equations; Numerical Linear Algebra; Fundamentals of Optimization; Computer Programming for Scientific Computing; HPC Architecture; Numerical Partial Differential Equations; Nonlinear Optimization; and either Parallel Numerical Algorithms or Design and Analysis of Parallel Algorithms.

Programme descriptionThis programme facilitates the professional development of students in the theory and practice of statistics and operational research (OR), providing the foundations for a successful career.
It is relevant in preparing students to work in areas such as the medical and health industry, the government, the financial sector and any other area where modern statistical tools and OR techniques are used. It provides a sound foundation and develops wider skills required for solving problems, working in teams and managing time.
Students will be able to identify appropriate statistical or operational techniques, which can be applied to practical problems.
Students will acquire the core skills of Java programming and use the packages R for Statistics and Simul8 for simulation. In addition, students will acquire the ability to use high-level applications in Excel.
Programme structureThis MSc consists of traditional lecture-based courses and practical lab-based courses. Assessment will be given by means of exams, written reports and programming assignments. An industrial or academic project is written up as a dissertation.

Our pure mathematics work was ranked by the latest Research
Assessment Exercise among the UK’s top five in this field for volume of
top-category research.
Our credentials have also been proven by recent accolades: many of
our staff are the holders of prestigious awards, including the European
Mathematical Society Prize, the Whitehead Prize of the London
Mathematical Society, the Waclaw Sierpinski Prize of the Polish
Academy of Sciences and the Berwick Prize of the London
Mathematical Society. Our lecturers have also presented at the
International Congress of Mathematicians, and one is currently an
EPSRC Leadership Fellow.
Research
The research carried out by the Algebra and Number Theory group
centres on four areas: non-commutative ring theory, especially
problems concerning nil rings, the Jacobson radical, prime and primitive
rings, and combinatorial problems in ring theory including growth of
algebras (Gelfand–Kirillov dimension); non-commutative algebraic
geometry, in particular representation theory of noetherian rings and
quantum algebras, and the growth properties of finitely-generated
algebras over fields, especially on the notion of the Gelfand–Kirillov
dimension of an algebra; number theory, focusing on the study of
algebraic integers which are confined in some way; and representation
theory and its applications to algebraic geometry and combinatorics.
Much of our research is closely related to the areas of geometry &
topology and mathematical physics, and you can benefit from close
links we maintain with these groups.
Active seminar programme
Through the School’s membership of the Maxwell Institute, we present
regular seminars, and run our own informal seminars and colloquia. We
also serve on editorial boards of various international journals. Most
importantly, many of our recent PhD students have gone on to
postdoctoral positions throughout the world.

Our group is one of the top two centres in the UK for research in the
field of analysis. Your passion for this highly specialised discipline will be

Research
We have a unique focus on the intersection of classical Euclidian
harmonic analysis and partial differential equations. Our specialisms
are: PDEs – elliptic and parabolic problems, especially in relation to
rough domains and minimal regularity; nonlinear hyperbolic equations
and systems, especially in relation to black holes and general relativity;
and nonlinear hyperbolic and dispersive problems in mathematical
physics and mathematical biology, null form estimates, kinetic
equations and chemotaxis. We also look at the connections between
harmonic analysis and geometry, number theory and combinatronics,
and stochastic analysis.
Additional resources
In addition to the School’s excellent facilities, as part of the Analysis
group you will have access to the Centre for Analysis and Nonlinear
PDEs (CANPDE). Established in 2007, the Centre is a joint project of
Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt under the umbrella of the Maxwell Institute.
Through seminars, mini-symposia and workshops, it aims to stimulate
and support development of research in theoretical nonlinear PDEs.

We are a multidisciplinary research group with close connections with
the School’s Algebra and Geometry & Topology groups. You will benefit
from being not only in one of the largest mathematics research groups
in the UK but also part of the Edinburgh Mathematical Physics Group
– a joint research institute formed in 1999 with Heriot-Watt University
through the Maxwell Institute.
Research environment
Our group pursues wide-ranging interests spanning a number of
disciplines. A central goal is to understand the principles behind
quantum gravity, through the study of black holes, cosmologies and
spacetime singularities, and via the use of holography and the interplay
with quantum gauge field theory through the gauge/gravity
correspondence. Particularly fruitful areas of research in the group are
the geometry of higher-dimensional black holes and their near-horizon
geometries in the context of higher-dimensional generalisations of
General Relativity.
We are fascinated by the various manifestations of supersymmetry,
which has led us to study gauge theoretic moduli spaces, often via
integrable systems techniques, displaying a beautiful interplay between
the algebraic geometry of curves and their associated function theory.
This research has led to computer implementations of various algebro-
geometric constructions. Recently we have made progress in some
purely mathematical problems suggested by the gauge/gravity
correspondence: namely, the classification of certain exotic algebraic
structures related to superconformal field theories, as well as that of
certain types of homogeneous supergravity backgrounds.

As a member of the Operational Research and Optimization group you
will also be part of the Edinburgh Research Group in Optimization
(ERGO), a wider association, with our group as the focus, which includes
academics at the universities of Dundee and Oxford as well as
commercial organisations. Through its regular seminar series, this
network provides interaction with a broad array of local and
international institutions and industrial bodies interested in the
development of operational research and optimization. As a result,
you’ll establish valuable relationships that will help you take your
research to its optimum level.
Research environment
Our group has as its primary focus the mathematical and computing
aspects of optimization. Core technology in optimization is the solution
for large sparse linear and quadratic problems, and we are able to
provide world-class expertise in the two main solution methods for
these: the simplex method and the interior point method.
We have interests in global optimization, decomposition methods,
parallel computing, industrial applications of optimization and
stochastic optimization. Our current researchers are exploring the
following areas: parameter uncertainty in queueing theory and revenue
management; algorithms for linear and nonlinear nonconvex smooth
optimization problems; optimization methods for linear, quadratic and
nonlinear programming; decomposition methods for large-scale
nonlinear nonconvex constrained optimization; bundle methods;
warmstarts for interior point methods; pooling problems;
computational techniques for solving large-scale linear programming
problems; applications of optimization in the chemical, oil and
electricity industries; and efficient gradient methods for large-scale
convex and nonconvex optimization problems.
An environment of excellence
Being part of the Operational Research and Optimization group and
ERGO will give you the opportunity to meet and confer with academics
worldwide – we’re currently interacting with researchers in Italy, Norway,
China, France, Spain and Turkey. Two of our visiting professors are world
leaders in continuous optimization. In addition, researchers from our
group are regularly invited to give addresses and organise workshops at

Our research group operates in what is perhaps the most widely applied
area of mathematics. The financial sector, in particular, is a major focus
of our research, and graduates with the right research experience can

small, specialised group, you’ll enjoy a research environment that
features a balance between theory and practice, access to one of the
most powerful computing facilities in the UK and strong links with

Research
Our research focuses on the following themes: stochastic differential
equations and stochastic partial differential equations (PDEs) and their
applications in nonlinear filtering and stochastic control; applications of
stochastic analysis of PDEs, stochastic PDEs and stochastic differential
equations (accelerated numerical methods in particular).
We’re also involved in the applications of probability theory, mainly to
mathematical finance, particularly stochastic volatility models,
equivalent martingale measures and incomplete markets. Other
applications include engineering, signal procession and biological
sciences.

With the financial sector being the major commercial employer of our
graduates, our involvement with the Scottish Financial Risk Academy,
established in conjunction with Heriot-Watt University, offers valuable

Our society revolves around variation, uncertainty and risk. By gaining a
greater understanding of these variables through the study of statistics,
we are able to create systems and techniques that benefit areas as
diverse as science, the law and finance. The Statistics group explores a
wide range of statistical theory and practice, often applying its findings
in collaboration with researchers in related fields, such as Informatics
and Biomathematics.
Research
Our work is balanced between classical and Bayesian statistics. Our
particular areas of interest include hierarchical multivariate random
effects models, wavelets, nonparametric regression and resampling.
While the group has a strong theoretical base, we are also heavily
involved in specific application areas, particularly forensic science, the
law, agriculture, and functional genomics data, such as gene expression
microarrays.
Strong links for collaboration
As a research student, you’ll find a wealth of expertise available to you
via our links with theorists and practitioners in related fields. The
University’s School of Informatics, for instance, is the largest and most
prestigious in the UK, and features a Machine Learning research group
whose work is linked to some forms of statistical research. In addition,
the Scottish Government-backed research provider Biomathematics and
Statistics Scotland is an associated research institute of the University.
With its main base in our building, it provides access to other researchers
with an interest in statistical genomics and bioinformatics, process and
systems modelling and statistical methodology.
If your research is in the expanding area of forensic statistics, you’ll
benefit from our link with the Joseph Bell Centre for Forensic Statistics
and Legal Reasoning. The centre applies and teaches statistical
techniques for interpreting evidence, such as binomial probabilities,
conditional probability and Bayes’ Theorem.

How to applyGeneral requirementsTo apply for any postgraduate degree, you will
in most cases need a UK degree with a 1st or
2:1 classification, or its international equivalent
(www.ed.ac.uk/international/country),
generally in a related area.
Some programmes may vary, so check the
entry requirements for the specific programme
you wish to apply for.
Taught postgraduate programmesBefore you apply, we strongly advise you to
contact us to discuss the programmes you
wish to explore, the courses you wish to cover
and even, if possible, any areas of interest for
your research dissertation. You should then
apply for our programmes online, using the
degree finder: www.ed.ac.uk/pg/degrees.
In the first instance contact the Programme
Director for the programme you are
interested in.
Research degreesThe first step in applying for a research degree
is to explore our areas of research and
determine which best suits your skills and
interests. After checking the dates for research
applications (available online), you should
contact your potential supervisor to discuss
whether they are happy to supervise your work.
Check to see if a separate application is needed
for funding, then apply online, using the degree
finder: www.ed.ac.uk/pg/degrees.
Any research area in the School of Mathematics
will require you to have a solid undergraduate
degree in a related field. If your background is
not directly related to mathematics, you may
still be considered – your potential supervisor
can advise you on this.
