22nd PGA Cup

2005Faced with an Everest-like climb, 10 United States PGA club pro-fessionals staged a gallant charge in their bid to pull off golf’s ulti-mate rally.

But, it was a gang of 10 from Great Britain & Ireland, without an Irishman on theroster, who now believe there is magic on the Emerald Isle.

Erasing a 21-yearhex in this 22nd renewal of the PGA Cup, Great Britain & Irelandposted a 15-11 victory at The K Club’s Smurfit Course to win the Llandudno Interna-tional Golf Trophy for the first time since 1984. The final score was identical toAmerica’s triumph in 1992, the last time it competed in Ireland.

In the end, it was fitting that decades of frustration were brought to a close by aWelshman. Matthew Ellis delivered the decisive point in order that his team couldcarry off a 26-inch high piece of hardware named for one of Wales’ largest ports.

“I’m sure they (his countrymen) were all riveted to the telly in the pubs watching,”said Ellis, who defeated Bob Ford of Oakmont, Pa., 3 and 1. “Seriously, it was a greathonor.”

The U.S. is now 5-5-1 on the road in the premier international competition for PGAclub professionals, and 14-5-3 overall in an event patterned after the Ryder Cup.

“We all are embarrassed about not winning a point in two afternoons, but give theirguys credit,” said Ford, PGA Master Professional at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.

Though his team needed but one point Sunday to clinch victory, GB&I Captain Jim Farmer of St. Andrews, Scotland, said heexpected an all-out American singles attack.

“We knew they had a great team out there, and though we got way ahead, we knew that they would come at us today,” saidFarmer, a veteran of four GB&I teams. “Twenty-one years after doing this, the guys are so excited. The way they set about their

task, it was in the cards from the first day.”

Shut out the previous two days in thefour-balls, the Americans proved that singlesplay is its game. They registered a record 7½points to GB&I’s 2½. It was just a few sham-rocks shy of a pot of gold.

“It was an unbelievable effort; every oneof them knew they had to win their match,”said U.S. Captain and PGA Honorary Presi-dent M.G. Orender. “We got within a fewpoints of doing it, which is pretty amazing.

“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole. They outplayed us in the team competition, and we were so far behind, it was highly un-likely. But, my guys never gave up. I’m veryproud of them.”

The parade of U.S. players attempting tomount the charge began with Scott Spence ofShorewood, Minn., who faced Wales’ Rich-ard Dinsdale, and were all square coming tothe 18th green. Both players put an approachin the water, but Spence had reached the

green in four, to Dinsdale’s five. Spence then ran his par putt eight feet past and missed coming back. Dinsdale two-putted for adouble bogey and the halve.

There were a lot of high moments for the U.S. Team despite the daunting task it faced in the singles. Ron Philo Jr. of AmeliaIsland, Fla., and Travis Long of Henderson, Nev., each enjoyed 7 and 6 routs. Philo cruised past England’s Mark Reynolds, whileLong polished off England’s Simon Edwards. Brett Melton of Monee, Ill., rolled past Scotland’s Gordon Law, 6 and 5. Chip Johnsonof Hingham, Mass., drained a 20-foot birdie putt at the 18th to edge England’s Andrew Baguley, 1-up.

“All of our team were competitive, but I also think the speed factor had something to do with it,” said Philo. “Today, I felt likeI was playing golf again.”

There was a measure of redemption for reigning PGA Club Professional Champion Mike Small of Savoy, Ill., and past nationalchampions Bob Sowards of Dublin, Ohio, and Tim Thelen of Richmond, Texas.

Small, who had not helped score a point, picked up a 2 and 1 victory over Scotland’s Fraser Mann. Sowards also posted a 2 and1 decision, downing England’s Tony Nash.

Thelen, a two-time PGA Club Professional Champion, defeated previously unbeaten Paul Wesselingh of Derby, England, grabbing the lead on the 13th hole and then coaxing in a 3½-foot par putt on the 18th for a 1-up victory.

“Yesterday I felt bad, because I played great but couldn’t help us win,” said Thelen. “It might have been a concentration deal. It’s match play and anything can happen. I looked at our team coming in and would have taken anyone as my partner. I hit a lot of

good golf shots today, and it was just the wrong club. There were a couple out there where I was posing, and the balls went over thegreen. You couldn’t really tell what was going to happen.”

Farmer said that he found one key to facing the U.S. in team competition.“The difference is that our guys all play in regional events, and get to know each other that way,” he said. “We have two

Scotsmen, two Welshmen, and pair them up that way. When you’ve got a guy from L.A. and Florida, it’s difficult to play that teamsport.”

Orender watched the GB&I team celebrating near the scoreboard and reflected upon the change in format all U.S. teams face inmatch play.

“Our guys are not used to team competition,” said Orender. “They told me last night that they were so worried about how theyplayed for their partner that they all tightened up. And, nobody made any putts. When they were able to play heads up, like they didtoday, they put it on them.”

21st PGA Cup

2003Barry Evans of Charleston, W.Va., contributed the final piece to anear-perfect performance by the United States Team of PGA Pro-fessionals in the 21st PGA Cup, closing out his singles match

against England’s Graeme Bell with a 2-and-1 victory at PGA Club in Port St. Lucie,Fla. The win gave the U.S. a 19-7 overall triumph that matched the 1990 U.S. Team’s19-7 conquest of Great Britain & Ireland at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Evans’ match ended as he was about to line up a 12-foot birdie putt. Bell, who hadfailed to make his par putt, extended his hand and congratulated his opponent. Thevictory kept alive a U.S. streak (10-0-2) of never having lost the Llandudno Interna-tional Golf Trophy on home soil.

The hard work for the U.S. was completed a day early. The Americans had sped toa record 15-1 margin through two days of foursomes and four-ball competition toclinch the necessary 13 points to hold on to the trophy. The U.S. combined for 62birdies and four eagles to 18 birdies for Great Britain & Ireland.

The closing chapter of the premier international competition forPGA Professionalsdidn’t come without Great Britain & Ireland making its own rally - but too late - in thesingles. The visitors closed with a 6-4 performance after having not won a match in thefirst two days.

Competing in pairs the first two days, the Americans went on a remarkable record 15-1 run on the 7,076-yard South Course.Americans Rob Labritz of Palm City, Fla., and Tim Thelen of Richmond, Texas, each went 5-0 in the three-day, Ryder Cup-style

format. Thelen, PGA head professional at Baywood Country Club in Pasadena, Texas, routed Scotland’s Gordon Law, 8 and 6, totie the all-time singles victory margin.

20th PGA Cup

2000Jeff Freeman of La Quinta, Calif., who had hoped earlier in the weekthat he would score the decisive point in the 20th PGA Cup, got hiswish under pelting rain at Wentwood Hills Course in Newport,

South Wales.Freeman, the 1999 PGA Club Professional Champion, two-putted for par from 40

feet on the 17th hole – his birdie attempt ramming the cup and coming to rest just overtwo feet away from the hole. Freeman made the comeback putt for a 2 and 1 victoryover John Dwyer of County Meath, Ireland. Freeman’s efforts gave the United Statesa 13½ to 12½ victory over Great Britain & Ireland, as the 10-member team of PGAProfessionals retained the Llandudno International Trophy for the eighth consecutivetime. The U.S. has not lost in the Ryder Cup-style matches since 1984, boasting a13-4-3 advantage.

“The golf played was excellent,” said Great Britain & Ireland Captain DavidLlewellyn. “We’re not disappointed; we just got beat by a point. I thought we were aswell prepared as we could be. And we lost by a point. When you lose as a professional, you are never happy. 19th PGA Cup

1998Bob Gaus of St. Louis, Mo., provided the necessary half-point in asingles match against Paul Wesselingh and assured the UnitedStates an outright victory over Great Britain & Ireland in the 19th

PGA Cup. Gaus, head professional at Tower Tee Golf Center in suburban St. Louis, lost a three-hole advantage over the final four holes on the Broadmoor Golf Club’s WestCourse in Colorado Springs, Colo. But his half-point was enough to push the U.S. past the13-point plateau and assure an outright victory. With that spark, the U.S. went on to a 17-9triumph and remained unbeaten on home soil (8-0-2) and 12-4-3 overall.

It was the second highest number of points scored since the PGA Cup began in1973. Only the 1990 U.S. Team, which posted a 19-7 decision at Kiawah Island, S.C.,scored more.

The U.S. won five of its first eight matches on the 7,202-yard West Course thatfeatured slick greens and high rough. The margin was increased to 11½ to 4½ after tworounds and left the singles to determine just how the 1998 U.S. Team would bemeasured in the overall history of the matches. Great Britain & Ireland put up its bestperformance in the final 10 singles matches before the U.S. prevailed, 5½ to 4½.

Gaus and reigning PGA Club Professional Champion Mike Burke Jr. of Towaco,N.J., finished 3-0-1 in their respective PGA Cup debuts.

18th PGA Cup

1996In one of the most tightly-contested series of matches in any golfcompetition, the United States team of PGA Professionals forged a13-13 tie with their Great Britain & Ireland counterparts in a dra-

matic conclusion to the 18th PGA Cup in Perthshire, Scotland. For the first time in any PGA of America-sanctioned match-play event, every

session ended in a tie. The final round was played in rain, wind and 58-degree tempera-tures on the Monarch’s Course of the renowned Gleneagles resort complex.

Jeff Roth of Flint, Mich., rallied from a two-hole deficit to win the final four holesand give the USA its tie to retain the Llandudno International Trophy. It marked thethird tie in the history of the PGA Cup and the first since 1981.

Roth, a 38-year-old PGA Professional at Flint (Mich.) Golf Club, trailed England’sBill Longmuir by two holes before parring the final four holes for a 2-up victory. Rothtapped in a five-foot par putt on the 18th green to complete his rally.

“It was a surreal feeling playing those final holes,” said Roth, the 1993 PGA ClubProfessional Champion. “Any one of our 10 guys could have done what I had to do. Ifeel fortunate to have answered the bell. There were no losers; I think golf won andthese PGA Cup won.”Morning Foursomes (Day One)Higgins/Brown (1-up) over Roth/IsraelsonLaw/Mann (3 and 1) over Nielsen/SchneiterIngraham/DeForest (2 and 1) over Carman/McKennaFord/Arthur (1-up) over Longmuir/Weir

17th PGA Cup

1994U.S. Captain Dick Smith, the PGA Honorary President, made anemphatic “locker room” speech to his team of PGA Professionals atPGA National Golf Club. “We’ve never lost on our soil,” Smith said

the evening before the first round, “and we’re not going to (lose) this week.” With thatchallenge ringing in their ears, the U.S. team combined a match-perfect (4-0) perform-ance by rookie John Lee of Naples, Fla., and a near-perfect effort (4-1) by 48-year-oldRick Acton of Redmond, Wash., to post a 15-11 victory over Europe’s finest clubprofessionals.

The U.S. team, with only three veterans, won six of its final 10 singles matches.Europe trimmed the deficit to 12-11 before the Americans warmed up. Playing in anearly singles match, J.L. Lewis of Austin, Texas, swung the momentum to the Ameri-cans. He reached the par-5, 545-yard 18th hole in two strokes, then sank a 50-foot eagleputt for a 1-up victory over England’s Robin Mann. Needing only a tie to keep theLlandudno International Trophy on American soil, Acton defeated Northern Ireland’sDavid Jones, 3 and 2. Lee then assured the team victory would be complete by downingEngland’s Hogan Stott, 2 and 1.

16th PGA Cup

1992The U.S. had the “Upper” hand at Kildare Hotel and Country Clubnear Dublin, Ireland. Actually, Brett Upper of Clearwater, Fla., wasplaying at a special level in guiding the Americans to a 15-11 victory

over a team of Europe’s finest club professionals. Upper, a former PGA Tour playerand the 1990 PGA Club Professional Champion, eagled the par-5, 529-yard 18th holethree straight times to clinch match victories.

Of 25 matches, 12 were decided on the 18th hole. American players won four timesgoing the distance, and four times they saved halves on the final hole. Only once didthey fail to hold a lead going into the 18th. Mike San Filippo lost a 1-up lead when TimGiles made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Upper teamed with Fieger to scoresix points in six matches. Larry Gilbert of Lexington, Ky., the 1991 PGA Club Profes-sional Player of the Year, earned two points in his sixth appearance in the PGA Cup.

15th PGA Cup

1990It was the first time PGA Professionals faced a team that had beenexpanded to include players from continental Europe. But thedeeper and more experienced U.S. Team was set for a rout. In a

shining example of sportsmanship during the second day in an afternoon four-ballmatch, American Dale Fuller reached down and conceded Tim Rastall’s eight-foot parputt on the 18th green. The gesture forced a halve in the match and sent the U.S. intothe final-day singles with a 13-3 cushion. The only thing left undecided the final daywas the victory margin. The U.S. finished with 19 points and surpassed the 1983 spreadof eight points as the greatest winning margin. But the sportsmanship episode tookprecedence.

“It was the thing to do,” said Fuller. “It was too good a match to come down to aneight-foot putt. They (the European team) are to be commended.” The European teamfeatured seven-time PGA Cup member Brian Waites, 50, and six-time Cup memberBrian Barnes. The U.S. contingent featured 1989 PGA Club Professional ChampionBruce Fleisher and former PGA Tour player Phillip Hancock, who won three matchestogether as a team and had a total record of 5-1 overall.

1988The Americans amassed a 15½-point total, the most points by eitherteam in the history of the PGA Cup, to capture the United States’first victory in the United Kingdom since 1976. Tom Wargo of

Centralia, Ill., rallied his teammates in the singles with a gutsy 1-up victory over PhilHinton, and 1987 PGA Club Professional Champion Jay Lumpkin of Amelia IslandPlantation, S.C., downed European veteran Russell Weir, 3 and 2.

1986The U.S. team won back the Llandudno International Trophy afteran absence of four years, as American depth took its toll throughoutthe singles round on the final day. Wheeler Stewart of Alexandria,

Va., 1984 PGA Club Professional Champion Bill Schumaker of Columbus City, Ind.,and Kevin Morris of White Plains, N.Y., each scored wins in the singles. Charlie Eppsof the U.S. squad and Scotsman Willie Milne, a burly golf-range operator, saved thebest for last. They reached the 438-yard 18th hole even. Epps knocked his approach tothe middle of the green, while Milne flew his 8-iron approach over the green and hischip shot eight feet past the cup. Epps followed by putting to within inches of the cup.As Milne prepared to replace his ball, Epps stunned players and officials by concedingthe eight-footer for a halved match. Milne then gave Epps a bear hug in the middle ofthe green. In 1986, the format was expanded to four foursomes and four four-ballmatches on each of the first two days.

12th PGA Cup

1984Great Britain & Ireland steamed ahead of the U.S. by winning fourof six opening matches, holding on to a 7-5 lead after two days, andpolishing off a Cup victory in the singles with five consecutive

victories and a day-ending 5½ to 3½ margin. The difference may have been veteransPeter Butler, 52, and 40-year-old David Huish, who finished 4½-1 overall. Huishscored a 1-up victory over Terry Florence in singles, and Butler halved with JohnElliott.

On the first day, Florence of Charleston, S.C., jumped into the waters of the WeeBurn guarding the 16th green to play a miraculous recovery shot during the morningfoursomes. Florence didn’t notice or care that he had not removed his shoes and socks.Despite his recovery, Florence and partner Jim Webb fell to Butler and Huish, 2 and 1.The U.S. loss was the Americans’ fourth consecutive defeat on foreign soil.

1983Great Britain & Ireland blitzed the PGA Professionals, 9½ to 2½,after two rounds, including a 3-0 shutout in the second-day morningfour-ball, and won five of nine singles matches to capture their third

victory in the PGA Cup. The 14½ to 6½ defeat matched Great Britain & Ireland’s1979 performance (12½ to 4½) for the widest margin of victory. “We were killedwithin 50 yards of the green,” said U.S. Captain Joe Black. “The British and Irish wereso much better. That’s usually our strong point.” The hosts proved it was their weekin many ways. In the opening day’s afternoon four-ball match between David Dunkand John Chillas against the American duo of Gene Borek and Kevin Morris, Dunkstruck an approach shot on the 17th hole from a bad lie. The ball made the edge of thegreen, and he holed a 50-foot eagle putt to square the match. Dunk then saved histeam, and halved the match, by sinking a five-foot par putt on the 18th green.

Ryder Cup Team member Peter Butler managed to catch 1981 PGA Club ProfessionalChampion Larry Gilbert and Richard Crawford to halve the first match of the openinground. The U.S. built an 8½ to 3½ lead during the second round, and Jim Albus,Crawford, John Jackson and Don Padgett II each scored wins in singles competition. It was fitting that Albus recorded the decisive point, having played perhaps the best ofany of his teammates during the week.

Ninth PGA Cup

1981Great Britain & Ireland, led by former schoolboy boxer MichaelSteadman, won six of the final-day singles matches to force thesecond tie in the history of the PGA Cup.

Steadman, the British PGA Club Professional Champion, teamed with fellowcountryman John Yeo in the first-day four-balls to defeat the top U.S. team of 1980PGA Club Professional Champion John Traub and Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club PGAProfessional Bob Ford. Rallying from a four-hole deficit after nine holes, Steadmanand Yeo clawed their way back. They pulled even after 16 holes, and Steadmanknocked his approach three feet from the cup on No. 17 for an easy birdie and a 1-uplead. Ford flew his wedge approach five feet from the pin on the par-5, 551-yard 18th,but Yeo hit his wedge approach from heavy rough to within two feet of the pin to halvethe hole and win the match. Steadman went on to win his singles match over Traub, 7and 6, and Yeo downed Jim Albus, 5 and 3. John Jackson, Ford and Don Padgett IImanaged to save U.S. pride by winning their singles matches.

Eighth PGA Cup

1980In 1980, both sides agreed to change the format to three four-balland three foursome matches on each of the first two days, and ninesingles matches the final day. The bus driver of the Great Britain &

Ireland Team overslept, causing a one-hour delay in the first-round four-ball competi-tion. It was an omen that things wouldn’t be going the visiting team’s way on thechallenging 7,051-yard Pete Dye-designed Oak Tree course. The Americans openedwith a 3-0 shutout in the morning matches and built a 5-1 lead after the first round. TheGreat Britain & Ireland team’s finest moment came in the second-day best-ball match, with David Huish and Jim Farmer recording birdies on five of the first seven holes todefeat Buddy Whitten and Doug Campbell, 2 and 1. But Whitten, who would finish4-1 overall, paired with Dave Barber in the afternoon and routed Huish and Farmer, 7and 6, in the most lopsided victory of the matches. Four of the final-day singles matcheswere decided on the 18th hole.

Seventh PGA Cup

1979Any hopes American PGA Professionals had of reclaiming theLlandudno Trophy were quickly thwarted by a veteran Great Britain& Ireland team and icy gale force winds which continually swept

across the Isle of Man during two days of the matches. The only U.S. victory in theopening round was the team of 1978 PGA Club Professional Champion John Gentileof Westport, Conn., and Jim Ferree of Pittsburgh, Pa. The duo downed the tandem ofJim Farmer and John Morgan, 8 and 6. The hosts took a 6-2 lead into the final-daysingles matches, winning six and halving one. Bob Bruno and Ferree were the onlyU.S. winners in the singles round, and Great Britain & Ireland’s David Huish and PeterButler went unbeaten in three outings.

Sixth PGA Cup

1978For the first time in the six-year history of the PGA Cup, the Britonswere victorious. It was also the first time in 21 years that a Britishprofessional team had beaten the Americans. The last British vic-

tory had been the 1957 Ryder Cup victory at Linderick Golf Club in Yorkshire, Eng-land. The hosts jumped to a 3-point lead in the first round, led 5-3 after the second andthen won 5½ points to sew things up in the singles. Laurie Hammer of Boynton Beach,Fla., and Tom Aycock of Kingsville, Texas, were the only U.S. players to figure in twowins, but fell back in the foursome matches. Rives McBee of Irving, Texas, sufferedhis first loss in four Cup appearances, losing to Peter Tupling, 2 and 1.

Fifth PGA Cup

1977 The fifth meeting of the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland clubprofessionals resulted in one of the best duels in PGA Cup history. It was the first time since 1927 that a visiting British Ryder Cup or

PGA Cup team didn’t go home a loser. The challenging 7,200-yard, Desmond Muir-head-designed course in Palm Springs, Calif., provided the setting. Britain’s 38-year-old Jim Kinsella, who was to face open heart surgery in the near future, teamed withDavid Huish to win a foursome match and came back with a 2-and-1 triumph over JimAlbus. The visitors won six of nine singles matches to force the first deadlock in PGACup history. It also was the first time nine singles matches were played, one more thanin the previous four matches. Said U.S. Captain Henry Poe, who persuaded the Britishto consent to nine matches, “I feel strongly that a man who makes the PGA Cup Teamshould play in the singles.”

Fourth PGA Cup

1976The fourth consecutive win for U.S. PGA Professionals was craftedin foul weather at the site of the 1929 Ryder Cup in Leeds, England. The Americans opened up a 4-0 lead in the first round of foursome

matches, before the British rallied over the next two days to tie, 5½ to 5½, midwaythrough the final round of singles. The evening of the opening day, an arctic front sweptin, bringing heavy rain and forcing delay in the start of the second day’s four-ballmatches. The delay produced a suspension of play because of darkness. The lone U.S.win in four-ball was by Rives McBee and Larry Gilbert, a 1-up win featuring twooutstanding recovery shots to beat Brian Waites and David Ingram. Gilbert and McBeealso provided wins in the singles round. McBee birdied the 15th hole, after a 3-ironapproach landed five feet from the cup, and closed out John Sharkey,4 and 3, providingthe momentum for victories in the next three singles matches.

Third PGA Cup

1975 After two years in the comfortof warm Pinehurst, N.C., the top PGAProfessionals of the U.S. and the British Isles met in Southport,England. The matches were renamed the PGA Cup after The PGA

of America took over the financing of the U.S. team and expanded the format from twoto three days. A pro-am was held prior to the matches, and $12,000 was raised to allowthe British PGA to stage the meeting. The U.S. won three of the four opening four-somes, and each team won one match and halved two in four-ball during the secondday. On the last day, the U.S. won four of the final eight singles and halved a fifthmatchfor their third straight Cup victory.

Second PGA Cup

1974Fresh from The PGA Club Professional Championship at Pinehurst,N.C., and having 10 more practice days than their British visitors, the U.S. PGA Professionals cruised to an easy victory in the second

annual Diamondhead Cup Matches. Rives McBee of Irving, Texas, joined New YorkerDenny Lyons and John Molenda of Detroit by going unbeaten through both days inteam and singles competition. Tommy Jacobs from Rancho La Costa, Calif., finishedthe matches in excellent form, with a 5-under-par effort to defeat David Huish, 3 and 2.

Scotland’s Bobby Jamieson accounted for three of his team’s 4½ points, crushingRex Baxter, 6 and 5, in singles and teaming with David Huish to defeat Stanley Brionand Larry Mancour in the first two rounds.

British Captain Brian Hutchinson expressed hope that the matches would be re-sumed in 1975 in Great Britain, but in mid-summer to provide acceptable playing condi-tions. However, the ’75 Cup matches were scheduled in October again, due to summerbeing at the height of the American PGA Professionals’ playing and working calendar.
