A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCEIn 1975, Ferris State University, in association with the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) founded the first Professional Golf Management (PGM) program in the world. The mission of the program is to prepare students for a variety of careers in the golf industry as PGA members. Offering a business degree in marketing and integration of PGA and PGM educations, the program also provides a unique 16-month internship opportunity. Students gain professional experience at golf facilities with PGA professionals or in administrative positions in PGA-affiliated organizations.

The success of the program includes more than 1,700 graduates, of whom 900 are active members of the PGA, working in the industry at the most elite golf facilities, management companies, professional associations and golf manufacturers.

Through the years and with the support of alumni, PGA professionals and friends, this unique program has become nationally recognized as an educational leader. The program has grown and developed by enrolling excellent students and securing funding support to maintain its distinctiveness. This is due in part to the efforts of a handful of dedicated and focused golf professionals and staff who have guided the program throughout its history. These individuals have dedicated their time, expertise and money for the betterment of the program because they believe in its importance, value and meaning.

THE STANDARD OF PGA EDUCATIONThe past decade has been a time of dramatic transition for the Ferris PGM program. The PGA fostered rapid growth of similar programs across the country – adding 16 new programs, creating a total of 20 PGM programs nationwide. Additionally, a new PGA-required academic curriculum was implemented, replacing the more gradual pace which typified the first twenty-five years of the program. This new educational program increases overall programming expectations and requires integration of a learning center approach as a key component of the process.

Expansion and modernization of the Katke Golf Course over the past 10 years has allowed for important gains in the scope and quality of student recruitment, and enabled the program to build on its national reputation, distinctiveness and successful record.

The next few years will be pivotal for the program; as competition increases for today’s aspiring PGA Professionals, the program is constrained, unlike those schools located in the South, by the lack of a year-round practice and educational facility. A state-of-the-art learning center is essential to continuing the Ferris PGM program’s tradition of excellent recruitment and education.

The modern era of golf instruction, education and game play, in and of itself, is filled with technological advancements. Now is the time for the PGM program to address these new educational needs and ensure that Ferris PGM students graduate with the most advanced and sophisticated knowledge in the industry.

A TOP-100 PRACTICE FACILITYFerris State University’s Katke Golf Course ranks among the finest practice facilities in the United States. Its rolling landscape – with a blend of links-style and tree-lined holes – allows golfers to play from a variety of conditions. One of the finest golf learning facilities in the Midwest, it boasts 100,000 square feet of natural turf hitting area, 21 holes of championship golf, an award-winning practice range and five sets of tees ranging from 2,354 to 6,967 (par 72) yards, so that golfers of all levels of ability may improve their games.

Katke Golf Course also serves as a hands-on learning lab for the Ferris PGA Golf Management Program. Students gain experience in accounting, business management, equipment fitting and repair, marketing, merchandising, and sales. Students sharpen skills in golf instruction, public relations, and organization and tournament operation. Katke’s PGA professional staff has been recognized for merchandising and junior golf development, being selected as Merchandiser of the Year and Junior Golf Leader by the Michigan Section PGA.

Katke underwent an extensive course improvement project, thanks to a $375,000 investment by the university. Improvement projects included new course drainage, bunker renovation, two new practice putting greens and a number of new tee boxes.

THE VISION FOR FERRIS PGMWith all of the advantages of Katke Golf Course to Ferris PGM students and the profession in which they go on to serve, the next critical step is to plan, fund and provide a more functional indoor practice facility for year-round golf instruction and practice. In spring 2010, Ferris PGM program leaders developed a vision and conceptual direction for the program. In January of 2012, this concept was converted into a design for a 6,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art learning center.

To continue its tradition of excellence, the PGM program has embarked on the most important undertaking in its history: a campaign to raise a minimum of $3.5 million for construction and endowment of an indoor education and training center that will provide uninterrupted opportunity for practice and instruction.

When realized, the proposed center will be the industry’s most sophisticated learning and training facility. Donors to the campaign will shape the futures of the Ferris PGM program, the lives of students and the profession of golf management. Ferris PGM program leaders are ready to find the giving opportunity that best expresses donors’ values and interests in the program, with a variety of options for naming and other forms of recognition for major gifts.
