ComEd Installs New Transformers: More May Come to PGECommonwealth Edison installed two transformers inPlum Grove Estates in February. The old transformers(see below), according to the workers, were installedin the late 1950s. In addition to causing electrical out-ages in the past few years, the transformers were notsafely insulated, creating an electrocution hazard ifthe unit was opened or broken. The new transformersare fully insulated, and will shut down immediately ifbreached. The new transformers (shown at right) arealso about half the size of the new transformers.

The workers suggested that other older transformersmight be replaced in 2012, despite not failing oftenenough to automatically qualify for replacement. Fac-tors include: the age and condition of the units; in-creased demand on the transformers from central airconditioning, computers, and other major electricalappliances; and the need for fail-safe operation.

Briarwood Bridge from page 1two vehicles and a pedestrian to cross at the sametime. The masonry wall would be replaced by a con-crete wall with a stone-like pattern. Residents ques-tioned the design, voicing concern for safety whenthe slow-down hairpin turn is gone. Sachs noted thebenefits, including eliminating the tight turn andblind corner, and encouraged residents to contact thetownship with their suggestions at [email protected] district will try to keep and maintain some of theolder trees near the bridge.

The proposed bridge will have minimal effect on theSalt Creek, said Sachs, so that area will continue tobe affected by heavy rainfall runoff. Sachs empha-sized that the bridge is not a contributing factor inthe flooding.

The township is planning to begin working on thebridge in August or September, weather permitting. The cost of the bridge replacement is estimated to be$1 Million, paid for in part by state and townshipproject funds.
