Being Neat I have recently been talking to students about neatness. Being able to communicate one’s thinking and reasoning is in an many ways just as important as the thinking and reasoning itself. When the expectation is that this communication be in written form it is important that it be done neatly, clearly and logically. Stream of consciousness may be an amazing tool in the hands of a great writer like Joyce but writing historical recounts, science reports, mathematical problem solving need to follow the demands of the various disciplines. We encourage all our students to be as neat as they can be and to follow the various setting out protocols that we have for all the key learning areas. We would all appreciate it if you could reinforce these messages at home and ensure that children have sharp pencils, clean erasers and rulers at school.

Ekka Ice-creams at School On what would have been the Ekka holiday yesterday, the P&C provided strawberry and cream ice-creams for the school staff. The idea was Vice-President, Mary Shyu’s, and was greatly appreciated by everyone here – although there were quite a lot of envious looks from students.

Interschool Sport The Mt Gravatt District Sport delegates have spent an

enormous amount of time in planning the reboot of sport in our district and have developed a COVID-19 Safe Plan for interschool sport that reflects the requirements of our venue suppliers. For this program to meet all mandated COVID-19 restrictions, schools are required to follow COVID-safe plans at all venues, including NOT ALLOWING ANY SPECTATORS at any venues. This means that, unfortunately, parents will not be allowed into venues to watch games. Supervision of children after school If you are running late to meet your children at the end of the day, please call us before 2.45pm so that we are able to inform them and then have them wait for you in the administration building. It is perhaps easy to underestimate the stress caused to young children when they are unexpectedly left at school without explanation. On these occasions, it would be much better if you provide the explanation to us beforehand rather than having the office staff here contact you so that we can provide reassurance to children. The office staff do not mind doing this at all in exceptional circumstances but it should not be an expectation nor routine. Anthony Gribbin Principal

Three men were on a boat that was stuck one kilometre from the shore. One was afraid of Sharks. The other couldn't swim. The last one didn't have a life jacket. However, they reached the shore without any problems. How did they do it?

Hi, my name is Sasha R and I am very proud to be the Wilson House Captain for this year. I love setting a good example and being a role model for everyone at school, particularly the prep students.

At school, I am involved in many activities such as Cambodia Club, Gymnastics Club, sport shed and recorder band. I have participated in AFL and the Netball Cup sporting teams. I love cheering people on and encouraging them to have a go.

Away from school, l play club netball for Redbacks and gymnastics for Club Dynamite. I also like cooking, reading, drawing, playing with friends and going to the dog park with my dog Buddy.

After school, I love playing soccer and talking to my friends. I love entertaining

Maths Teasers

Cambodia Club We have had such a wonderful response to our request for plants. I would like to acknowledge the families, teachers and school staff for their contribution of plants to our ‘Cambodia Corner’ garden. The garden is re-ally starting to take shape and we look forward to providing photos soon. The Cambodia Club is looking for more donations of plants to place in the gar-den. Plant types such as Bromeliads and Orchids are going to make up the bulk of our gar-den. We are also looking for hollow logs for our orchids. If you are in a position to as-sist with any of these plant types or hol-low logs please contact Mr Walker mwalk254@eq.edu.au Our ‘Containers for Change’ initiative has seen 3575 items collected at school and recycled. A fabulous effort so far and while

we are getting a small amount of revenue from this program, I do believe that the greatest thing is that we have stopped 3575 items from going to landfill. Our goal is to recycling 10,000 items by the end of our school year. A great effort from everyone! Japanese Club Students have been very busy preparing for our upcoming Asia Week and are look-ing forward to celebrating this special week with the school. Asia week – 14th – 18th September.

Year 5 Healthy Wealthy and Wise This term our year five students have been investigating the inquiry questions, focussing on ways they can promote healthy habits at Holland Park State School. As a part of this unit of work, the students will work in a collaborative team , applying their knowledge of health, mathematics, economics, and business and design, to technologies to design a mini-golf course. To develop their knowledge of golf, the students will be participating in a weekly golf session with Ian Jones from Grotto Golf Co Pty. These sessions will enable the students to learn the basic skills of golf in addition to learning an appreciation of the sport of golf as way to keep healthy. As you can see from the image below the students were very engaged in the lessons! Thank you to Mr Walker for organising this activity for the year 5 students. 2021 Prep Catchment and

Sibling Enrolments

We are accepting catchment and sibling enrolments for prep 2021. If you have younger children commencing prep next year, please complete and return the enrolment application forms as soon as possible. These are available on our school website. If this is your first child commencing prep, please make sure you include two documents for proof of residency, along with the original birth certificate. For sibling enrolments you just need to bring the original birth certificate.

Swim School With the P&C’s decision to hand responsibility of the swim school operations to the school, we are in the process of organising refunds of moneys that had been paid for lessons that were not attend-ed since the pools closure on 17th March 2020.

If your family is owed a refund, please con-tact the P&C via email pandc@hollandparkss.eq.edu.au. If you know of any other families outside of the Holland Park State School community that

may also be in this situation would you kindly advise them to contact us.

The P&C have organised a morning at the pool where all families are welcome to come along and retrieve any items that they may have left in the vicinity of the school swimming pool. Any queries regarding refunds can also be discussed and actioned on this morning. The date that this will take place is Saturday 22nd August 2020, 9am till 12pm.
