Why Use Desiccants?
You know the two biggest enemies of any Packaged Products?
Moisture & Oxygen Lethal potential to damage metals, drugs, woods, plastics, glass, Foods, Cloth, Paper, Leather… The effects of Moisture & Oxygen are: Simply Devastating! On the product life, presentability, functionality & performance, on profits & finally on the repute of manufacturer/exporter
Strategy For Moisture Control....In Packaged Goods
Reduce! (by MAP & Vacuum) Eliminate (by Desiccants) Prevent (by Barrier Packaging)
Something About Moisture• Present in the air in the form of Vapors (Gas
Phase) having more penetrative & damaging ability than liquid form. We measure moisture in % RH w.r.t.
• Temperature and is dynamic through out the year. Also the moisture in compressed air flow is measured as dew point.
• Affects integrity of packaging materials, packaged products, bacterial growth, bad odour etc…
Problems! Problems! Problems!
- Odour - Rust, Corrosion- Container Rain - Mold, Mildew and Bacterial Growth - Weak Cartons, Label Damages
Now The Solutions For MoistureSilica Gel Desiccants Cargo Dry Paks Oxygen Absorbers
How are Desiccants Rated?• Packaging experts face a confusing array of
variables when selecting moisture adsorbents partly because moisture control is a multifaceted challenge. There are four sources of water contamination in a closed container or package:
• Water vapor in the air inside the package.• Water vapor adsorbed by the materials inside
the package Water vapor on the walls of the package
• Permeation of water vapor into the package.
Quality Parameters-Desiccants• Should have very high adsorption capacity • Should have low residual moisture (LOD) • The desiccant material should have neutral pH (6.5-7.5), inert & non-toxic in
nature • Should be packed in non-dusting, non-tearable, non-lintable packing materials
preferably spun-bonded olefins • The packet material should not have wetting effect on surface upon saturation • Should be confirming to International standards CFR/EU compliant, MIL-D
specs, JDEC-033, FDA etc… • Should be active (RTU) when using.• The packet material should be permeable to moisture • Desiccant must have moisture holding capacity at higher temperatures below
evaporation point of water Desiccant should not release water upon saturation
Do's
Do & Don'ts-DesiccantsDont's
• Always use desiccants when you are ready to pack your goods & seal immediately
• Place the desiccants at different locations inside the package & near the possible sources of air permeation
• Store in the original container away from darkness
• Look at the HIC placed inside the desiccant container before using
• Expose the desiccants unnecessarily
• Remove the HIC card from the original container
• Use over-exposed desiccant pouches
• Punch holes in the desiccant packets
