Current plan when compared across NJ schools...
Of New Jersey’s 811 public-school districts, charter schools, renaissance schools, and schools for students with disabilities, 110 currently have all in-person learning (15 more than three weeks ago) and 533 have hybrid instruction (42 more). That includes about 74,000 students learning in classrooms and more than 760,000 on a hybrid schedule. There are currently 142 districts with all-remote learning — 48 fewer than three weeks ago. That includes 447,000 students.

In addition to wearing face coverings, schools and districts must implement policies that allow for social distancing within the classroom to the maximum extent practicable. This can be achieved by ensuring students are seated at least six feet apart. If schools are not able to maintain this physical distance, additional modifications should be considered. These include using physical barriers between desks and turning desks to face the same direction (rather than facing each other) or having students sit on only one side of the table, spaced apart.

CDC Executive Summary - Updated February 26, 2021Schools providing in-person instruction should prioritize two mitigation strategies:
1. Universal and correct use of masks should be required, at all levels of community transmission. Require consistent and correct use of face masks, by all students, teachers, and staff to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission through respiratory droplets.
2. Physical distancing (at least 6 feet) should be maximized to the greatest extent possible. To ensure physical distancing, schools should establish policies and implement structural interventions to promote physical distance of at least 6 feet between people. Cohorting or podding is recommended to minimize exposure across the school environment.

*Who are the OCR/ESL students referred to on the “Proposed Elementary School Update” slide?
Out-of-Class Resource (OCR), also known as “Pull Out Resource Program,” is a special education program. Elementary school parents may confirm if this includes their children by looking at the “Statement of Special Education and Related Services” page in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Elementary school parents may reach out to their case manager if they are uncertain. English as a Second Language (ESL) is a program for students who qualify for ESL services based upon WIDA/Access testing.

Why Not Bring Grades 3-5 Five Days April 19th?● Class sizes are significantly larger in grades 3-5 when
compared to K-2● Students will be very close together as class size maximum is
28 students and social distancing will not be possible○ K max is 20○ Grade 1 max is 22○ Grade 2 max is 23
● The phased plan will allow time to identify challenges, and determine feasibility to expand to the upper grades on May 3rd

Kindergarten Proposed Schedule Change to Minimize Disruption
Two Hour Kindergarten Session with Virtual SpecialsMorning Session: 8:55 a.m. -10:55 a.m. (Virtual special) Afternoon Session: 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. (Virtual special) Rationale
○ Current traveling kindergarten teachers teach morning and afternoon sessions at two schools which cannot be maintained if students attend 5 days per week
○ In order to maintain current teacher assignments, this schedule allows for travel time while ensuring the kindergarten teacher delivers instruction for the duration of the two hour class session
○ Students with a traveling teacher may be required to switch session times (a.m./p.m) OR if that is not desirable, a teacher change would be necessitated
○ If the current 2.5 hour schedule is maintained on a five day instructional model, many kindergarten students (from all classes) will need to be reassigned to different teachers
○ The current 2.5 hour schedule includes an “overlap” period which is taught by another teaching staff member. With the proposed 2 hour session, the overlap period would cease to exist and the kindergarten teacher would remain with students the entire time
○ Virtual specials will continue to be offered outside of the two hour kindergarten block

SURVEYSKEY QUESTIONS:
How many students will return?
How comfortable are parents knowing that social distancing standards cannot be maintained?
How flexible will parents be with changing teachers?
How willing are parents to commit to the instructional model?
Will there be an effort to game the system?
