I once was told of a baseball coach who had a hard time making decisions. As the story goes, there was a runner on first when the batter hit the ball safely up the middle between the shortstop and second baseman. As the runner rounded second, he looked to his coach in the third-base box for a signal that would tell him if he should stay at second or continue on to third. It is the responsibility of the coach to see where the ball is and determine whether the runner has a good chance of advancing to third. The coach couldn’t decide. With one hand he motioned the runner to come on while with the other he signaled him to stop. The runner, confused by his coach’s indecision, was caught in a run-down and tagged out.

Right now, I’m kind of feeling like that runner. Or am I the coach? We’ve gathered a great deal of momentum when it comes to our Centennial plans. We’ve got a couple of runners on base, and we’re poised to score. However, there’s some hesitation at second in regard to the capital campaign portion of our plans. We’ve seen the initial renderings of our architects, we know generally what we want to do (specifics have yet to be determined), but the question is whether we have the resources with which to complete what we will eventually agree to do. When we invite folks to come and celebrate our reunion weekend next year, we want our facilities not only to look good, but to reflect our enthusiastic hopes for the future. We want to enter our second century with the strong belief that our ministry will continue in inviting people to be a part of our church’s life. The physical facilities do not insure this will happen, but they are certainly a big help. So how do we best proceed? Another vital question: where are our hopes and dreams? Capital campaigns are about money, and frankly, we are struggling right now on that front. Take a look at the report in this newsletter and you will note that we are quite a bit behind this year. Our receipts are far outweighed by our expenses. There are reasons for our current situation. Not only did we lose some faithful givers this past year, we had unexpected expenses. Our aging facilities are a constant drain (read Jim’s column and you will see that we’ve had another setback requiring a financial response), with high-cost issues of late, largely due to the replacement of roofs. Otherwise, we really haven’t spent more than we normally do (in fact, our year-to-date expenses are less than where we were this time last year); it’s just that our receipts have not kept up with the demand. While I do not want to speak for them, I’m getting the feeling that because of our financial constraints our Centennial Capital Campaign leadership group isn’t sure whether to stay at second or go on to third. In order to determine how best to proceed scripture, as always, is our guide. If Joshua were the coach, I know what he would say to us, the same thing he said to the Israelites as they were about to cross the Jordan: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). I will say this: stopping at second, or even third, is not an option. We will continue to work hard to see that we forge ahead in faith, as Joshua advises, because the LORD our God will be with us wherever we go. I say let’s round second and head for third, and let’s do it together. In fact, I’ll go one better... I’ll see you at home plate!

Fall is a busy time at PHBC! Mark your calendars for these special events:

Saturday, Sept. 22, 11 AM Hillcrest Farmers Market volunteer

appreciation lunch on the lawn near the church office ramp, weather permitting. Rain plan: Hicks Hall. Sunday, October 7 Teacher Appreciation Sunday with recognition in worship and complimentary First Sunday Lunch for our teachers On Wednesday evening, September 19, Harriett Phillips begins a study of the Beth Moore book and DVD “The Inheritance”. Come to the library at 5:30 and enjoy! A new opportunity for the Hillcrest Farmers Market has come our way: a Winter Market to continue to serve the community and our farmers. Many of our growers will have crops through the Fall and Winter months. They will continue to operate the market in the normal location along Kavanaugh. The new idea will be that when the weather is too cold to be outside, they will set up inside the gym. We will protect the floor. They prefer to be along the sidewalk so shoppers can see them and stop to buy, so this option will be exercised rarely. New fall hours will have the market open at 8 AM Please pray for this ministry and service of PHBC, as we seek to meet our neighbors. We also welcome any new volunteer(s) who would be interested in assisting as the church’s liaison to the market in the Fall and Winter months. There would be little actual “set up” required, but primarily to be on site as our church representative. We would continue to have a table with information about the church, and opportunities for service. Please let me know if this is an area of service you’d like to know more about. Thanks! Our church is reaping compliments for being a place of service and outreach to the community. Last week at market, our neighbors learned that we host Family Promise and we found some interest in helping us with that ministry. God is working as we open our doors to serve and meet our neighbors. Blessings and thanks, Carolyn

Well, the time has come to say good-bye! Yes, farewell to the good and faithful servant, our ice machine. The kitchen ice machine has served us long and served us well. It is so old that I don't know the actual age. When you think back over all the Christmas Feasts, Wednesday nights, First Sunday lunches, Church Picnics, Farmer's Markets, special meetings and events, there has been a lot of ice produced. I received final word on Monday that the ice machine

cannot be repaired. A new machine will soon be here to start making ice for us. The cost for this new machine is $3,537.10. This comes at a time when we do not need this expense. If you happen to have extra funds and would like to help pay for the new ice machine, send your donation marked "Ice Machine".
