23. PERSONAL ASSESSMENT OF OWN WORK
a. Teaching Statement Throughout my long teaching experience at several universities, I have taught a large
number of courses which included general, analytical, and environmental chemistry as
well as electrochemistry and corrosion. I consider myself a dedicated and popular
teacher. My solid background and experience in chemistry make me capable to teach,
supervise students, and to perform scientific research in the area of my specialization.
I believe that university professors are ethically obligated to prepare and present material
and conduct themselves in relation to their students in a specific way. As a university
teacher, it is my responsibility to enter each class fully prepared and to provide my
students with clear expectations and policies in a syllabus.
I believe that teachers must adhere to the subject of the lecture, be helpful, and able to
motivate the students. In addition, students must be encouraged to think, ask questions,
and participate in classroom discussions.
I am strongly convinced that successful teachers are those who possess the ability to
explain, express their ideas effectively, respond to students' questions, and be available
during office hours.
An effective teacher must be willing to continually adjust to the needs of the students.
After all, the primary goal of teaching is to encourage students to learn and to provide
them with the tools and skills necessary to do so. Teachers have an obligation to find an
effective way to do so.
As a researcher and a teacher, I believe in bringing the benefit of my research into my
teaching to keep students interested in the subject and informed of the latest
developments and challenges in the field.
Finally, I believe in being respectful to my students, and would consider myself, simply
one more in a classroom of adults who happens to have a bit of expertise in a particular
area worth sharing.
b. Research Statement My background in chemistry and electrochemistry, and my expertise in a wide variety of
instrumental methods of chemical and surface analysis, enabled me to produce several
high quality research works in various areas of specialization which include
Electrochemistry, Corrosion, and Metal Deposition. I have also been acting as a referee

in “applied Surface Science” journal, published by Elsevier Science and in "University of
Sharjah Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences", Published by the University of Sharjah.
During my duties at the American University of Beirut, my research interests expanded
to include corrosion, metal finishing, radioactive labeling and scanning probe
microscopy. In order to enhance and broaden my research knowledge, I have visited
several highly established research laboratories in England and in the USA, where I
learned and mastered state-of-the-art techniques which included SPM (Scanning Probe
Microscopy) (Atomic Force Microscopy, AFM, and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy,
STM), electroless nickel plating, and radioactive labeling.
At the University of Sharjah, my research interests expanded further to include the study
of the environmental aspects of lagoon Khalid, lagoon Al-Khan, and the dumping area in
the Emirate of Sharjah through the “Sharjah University Environmental Research Team”.
In order to strengthen my knowledge in this field, I attended a condensed 5-day
workshop on “Marine Pollution” in Kuwait.
I visited highly reputable international universities such as “University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign”, Urbana, USA; “University of Portsmouth”, Portsmouth, England,
UK; “University of Southampton”, Southampton, England, UK; and “University of
California at Irvine”, Irvine, California, USA; where I spent several months as “visiting
Research Fellow” and working with prominent and pioneer researchers in area of the
electrochemistry.
I have established a research group entitled: "Corrosion Prevention & Control Research
Group", registered at the "the College of Graduate Studies & Research", and hosted by
the College of Arts & Sciences, University of Sharjah (2007-2012). This research group
looked at natural compounds (green chemistry) and studied their inhibition effects on the
corrosion of metals. Several research projects were completed and published.
I have established a “Corrosion Prevention & Control Research Center” (2012-2015).
Several research projects are in progress
c. Administrative Work I held a position of Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at the University of
Sharjah (October 1, 2010 - August 31, 2012), and I have coordinated and/or participated
in a multitude of committees throughout my carrier. I am competent, cooperative,
understanding person, and I get along very well with my colleagues.
d. Community Service Currently, I am a Member of Research Team which is involved in the investigation of the
environmental aspects of lagoons Khalid and Al-Khan in the Emirate of Sharjah (A joint
program between the University of Sharjah and the Environment and Protected Areas
Authority). The project is supported by the University of Sharjah (2000-Present) and a
“Technical Report” (UO-1) has been published.
I was the Coordinator of a research group entitled: "Corrosion Prevention & Control
Research Group", registered at the "the College of Graduate Studies & Research", and
hosted by the College of Sciences, University of Sharjah (2007-2012). This research
group has visited several local industries such as "National Paints" and is in the process
of building with them strong research collaboration (R&D).

I was the Director of the “Corrosion Prevention & Control Research Center” (2012-
2015). This center is formed to establish a unique “Corrosion Prevention & Control
Research Center” at the University of Sharjah for a future Scientific collaboration
between the “University of Sharjah” and many other institutions locally, regionally, and
internationally such the one that has recently been established with the “Federal State
Unitary Enterprise, All Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials”.
I have participated in many conferences and workshops such as "Middle East Teachers of
