Description of the Research Area

Industrial production in Europe accounts for the 16% of the European GPD and is a keydriver forinnovation, productivity and job creation. As stated in the 2014-15 road map of the PPP Factory ofthe Future "future factory will be clean, highly performing, environmentally friendly andsociallysustainable". This research area focuses on improving the performance of the industry of thefuture through the innovative application of technologies, processes and methods to the designand manufacturing of industrial products. The entire life cycle of the product is considered and inparticular:

R&D&I activities for product and process innovation•

product ideation and development•

manufacturing process investigation, optimisation, planning and control•

manufacturing system design and planning•

product service and disposal•

Hence, all the activities required to transform ideas into final products making use of zero defect, affordable, personalised, and eco-efficient manufacturing processes are integrated andinvestigated within the context of a highly competitive and globalized world from prototyping tomass production. Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

Laser cutting of metals is today the most diffusedapplication of high power lasers, and it is one of the maindrivers of innovation. Research is needed to continuouslyfind new processes, to define new components, startingfrom the laser sources, to define new strategies tomonitor, model, and eventually control both the process initself, and the status of the system and its components. The research has a modern approach, starting from theknowledge base related to the process, but connectingthis knowledge base to the most recent concept andarchitectures of Industry 4.0 referring to the digitization ofthe manufacturing technologies.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

Doctoral activities will involve building a (personal) robustexperience in the cutting and piercing process and canspecifically focus on one of the following research fields:

1. Modeling the laser cutting process with experimentaland numerical approaches;2. Assessing the performances of new components(sources, heads, lens mirrors, sensors);3. Investigating new architectures of cutting systems;4. Building a model of data set to be logged and analysedin order to increase the level of automation onperformance and upgrade of the system

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

In this era of economical crisis, many productive activitieshave been moved out of Europe to countries with ultra lowlabour cost, with the intent of making more competitiveEuropean products. Especially in luxury and hi-cost Madein Italy products, this strategy has been demonstratedfaulty, and many companies are thinking to re-locate theirproduction in the original countries, providing cost-reductions by optimizing the production process. Thepurpose of this thesis is to develop a methodological andtechnological approach for the production of personalizedfashion goods (shoes, bags, clothing, accessories) byreverse engineering existing modular elements, recombining and re-designing them with the help of virtualprototyping approaches. The final products will then begenerated with highly automated processes, minimizingthe investments on raw materials.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

The PhD position is part of the H2020 ICT EuropeanProject SPARK (Spatial Augmented Reality as a Key forco-creativity).http://spark-project.net

The SPARK project aims at realizing a responsive ICTplatform that exploits the potential of Spatial AugmentedReality for supporting and fostering collaborative creativethinking in the design process by reducing languagebarriers due to diversity of background and sketchingskills of the design team members. Spatial AugmentedReality enhances the innovation capabilities of creativeindustries through the facilitation of brainstorming and theearly assessment of design solutions in a Co-Designenvironment.

This empowers the conception of new ideas, especially inthe fields of product and packaging design, where theneed to reduce the realization of physical prototypes isstrongly felt. The project aims also at validating theeffectiveness and efficiency of the SPARK platform on areal operational environment and at fostering itsdeployment by the SME creative industries.
